If the pump head curve has a peak point, the shutoff head should be
replaced with a peak head.
Further to the above, the maximum discharge pressure may be equal to
setting pressure of a relief valve provided that the relief valve is
equipped at the pump discharge.
(3)
When the MDP exceeds 1.1 times pump rated discharge pressure, it will
affect potentially the design pressure of equipment and systems at
down-stream of the pump. In this case, the design pressure of the
subject equipment and systems should be adjusted accordingly.
(1)
It should be clearly stated on the inquiry specification (i.e. data
sheet), that the discharge pressure and total head is designated at the
point of discharge nozzle.
(2)
When pumps are tested in performance at Vendor's shop and the discharge
pressure is measured at the point of * in Fig. 9, the pump performance
should be corrected accordingly.

(1)
Material for radial bearings of vertical pumps should be carbon, which
has the strong recommendation from past experience.
(2)
For low temperature service such as liquid ammonia or liquid propane
gas (LPG), this requirement is mandatory,
(3)
3.10
Vercial pumps for low temperature service are usually provided with cold
insulation around their barrel to protect the pumps from being jacked up
due to freezing. In this case, the designer should take care of baseplate
size and position of anchor bolts to be properly fit with the insulation
(Fig. 10).

3.11
Vertical pumps handling saturated liquid such as LPG and liquid ammonia
should be furnished with equalizing piping at pump suction in order to get
ventilation. This piping should have enough size to vent gas released and
should rise continuously to a suction vessel. The equalizing piping is
preferably separated from flushing piping from/to mechanical seals.
3.12
(1)
A starting torque curve of automatically started pumps has a different
shape from that of manually started pump as shown in Fig. 11.
(2)
The designer should clearly identify the pump which is automatically
started and inform a motor manufacture of this fact. If necessary, the
starting torque curve should be sent to the motor manufacturer.
Remark: In Fig. 11, the cross point of the torque curves gives us an
idea of operating speed.
-DISCHARGE VALVE
OPEN (AUTOMATIC)
---DISCHARGE VALVE
SHUT (MANUAL)
Fig. 11 Pump Starting Torque Curve
(3) It is recommended that output power rating of drivers should cover the
power required by the automatically started pump at the end of curve.
3.13 Shaft Seals
(1)
Mechanical seals will be used for flammable or toxic service. API
Standard 610 calls for use of the mechanical seals for all services.
(2)
Gland packings can' be used for services of cooling water, steam
condensate or other water.
(3)
The mechanical seals, which are used for the service containing slurry,
are externally flushed with clean liquid.
(4)
For high temperature services, the mechanical seals are usually
provided with a cooler in a flushing line or they are of bellow type.

mechanical seal type:
2

single
Double
mechanical seal
(6)
Recently a tandem or a double mechanical seal becomes popular in use
for low temperature hydrocarbon. The double mechanical seal needs an
expensive sealing system consisting a reservoir, pumps and coolers.
(Refer to Attachment (4) in detail.)
Non-seal pumps can be optionally replaced with such special
application.

Resonance Vibration of Large Vertical Pumps with Motor Speed
(1)
Thrust froce around an impeller with a balance holes will become
different from that without balance holes as shown in Fig. 13.
(2)
When the impeller is provided with balance holes and suction pressure
is higher than 15 to 20 barG, the thrust force loading impeller opening
cannot be properly balanced, which results in overloading to the thrust
bearing. Thus, in this case the impeller will not be furnished with
the balance holes at all.
(3)
When the suction pressure of pumps is very close to liquid vapor
pressure, flushing liquid, i.e. self liquid, in a stuffing box is
possibly vaporized by heat generated at the part of matings of a
mechanical seal provided that the box pressure is equal to the suction
pressure. In this case, the impeller will not be furnished with the
balance holes, either.
(4)
The box pressure, in such a.case that no balance hole is furnished, is
nearly equal to pump discharge pressure. Flushing liquid to the
mechanical seal will be circulated to "pump suction, which is called
"Reverse Flushing" (API Plan No. 13).

(31) Motor or Turbine-Drivers
- Check if supplier and place of mounting of the drivers are
correctly designated as per PO condition. - Check if the rated output of the
drivers are appointed in
that the motor is not overloaded during pump operation under such a
condition.
(32) Confirm that pump speed is as designated by pump vendor
and that it is not necessarily coincident with motor rated speed.
(33) Check if the manufacturers of motors, turbines, seals and
couplings are as per job specific requirements if any.
(34) The following vendors data are to be put back to Process or
Utility P & I Diagram; - Main and auxiliary connection size and rating
according to applicable spec, and standard, and min. dia.of impeller is not
applicable.
- Check if viscosity correction is done correctly as per Hydraulic

- Confirmation on installation-location of electronic governors Signal linkage between electronic governors and a central control panel
and/or a local control panel (if any) - Concerning DCS Instruments
transmitting their signals to DCS Allowable scanning period of DCS
(especially for antisurge control) Items which are put into trip circuits
and should not be passed through DCS nor PLC (such as overspeed trip or
load-failure control.) Type and level of signals to DCS Necessity of
barriers and their suppliers (normally by Instrumentation Design Dept) Details of the antisurge control system (integrated into DCS or composed
of a single loop controller, or CCC or equivalent, and specific
requirements from equipment side to an antisurge control valve, etc.) Mutual understanding for operating place and procedure of initial start-up
for major rotating machines (from null speed till governor min, speed) Installation-location of instruments required for start-up operation Operating place and procedure for start-up after reaching the governor
min, speed (normally at CCR). - Installation-location of indicators and
annunciators necessary for start-up and normal operation of rotating
machines. - Necessity of voting system (such as 2 out of 3 or a
redundant system), and appointment of the subject instruments. Requirement of a timer or a bypass for specific trip circuit - Protectiontype of instrument cables (conduit pipe, flexible tube, cable duct, etc.) in
case that the cables are included in the scope of equipment-vendors
supply, - Special requirements, if any, from an equipment-vendor for the
cables which will be supplied by the purchaser.
