Declaration Essay

The Declaration of Independence was made by the leaders of the American Revolution
to demand to separate from King George and England.They wanted to independent from
England for the reason that King George was not giving them what they wanted. It was a list of
the wrongs the King did to the people. The quote I chose is in fact still a problem in the world
today for many reasons. The Declaration of Independence says, We hold these truths to be
self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain
unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. In todays
world, this right is not honored because we have racism, our happiness causes violence, and
government does not protect our rights.
The people write to King George and say that it is obvious that we are given our natural
rights. These rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration is written to list
the wrongs of King George and why they want to separate from England. This sentence is
explaining briefly the things that they are not being given from King George. A world where this
ideal is being honored would be satisfying to the people of England. There would be no
Declaration of Independence and the people would be calm and have no need for a war.
This right is not being honored in the world today. In the Declaration of Independence,
all men are created equal. No, racism in the word today can prove that phrase wrong. For
example, the famous Trayvon Martin case was considered a racist motivated death. This
17-year-old boy was shot by a 28-year-old man named George Zimmerman who was a
neighborhood watch volunteer. After the case was investigated, the reality was that Martin was
just on his way home from a 7-11 with an Arizona and skittles when Zimmerman says, This
guy looks like he's up to no good, or he's on drugs or something. Its raining and he's just
walking around (Botelho, 2012). Zimmerman claimed that he shot him in self-defense, but after
Martins body was examined, there was no DNA that shows he touched Zimmerman. This boy
was threatening to Zimmerman just because of his color (Botelho, 2012). The Declaration of
Independence of all men are created equal is not being fulfilled because if it was, racism would
have never been invented.
The right of having pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence is not
being honored in the world today. Pursuit of Happiness is a right that basically means you can
live freely and do what makes you happy as long is it is not going against laws and not violating
the rights of others. Well in todays world, we have homosexuality. This makes people happy
and it actually has no interference with peoples rights. Although on June 12, 2016, the Orlando
shooting occured. This was a hate-crime shooting where a man was aiming for the Pulse Night
Club, and it happened to be gay club (Barry, 2016). This event is an example that in the world
today, these rights from the Declaration of Independence are not being exercised. We are not
letting others have their pursuit of happiness. Some people are against our form of happiness
and that is where hate comes in. We have hate and feel the need to end others peoples
happiness with these tragic events. These events also show that not all men are created equal
or treated equal. Our world today do not know the meaning of the Declaration of Independence.
The Declaration of Independence states that we have unalienable Rights. These are our
natural rights and what cannot be taken away. Well in our election, the Declaration of
Independence is forgotten. In a Washington Examiner article it states, Unfortunately, in official

Washington today, we see America at its worst. In their quest for power, political elites in both
parties want to turn the nation's core beliefs upside down. They believe the power of
government should be more important than individual rights (Rasmussen 2014). This time, King
George is not the one taking our rights away. Our political elites are trying to interfere with it. In
todays world, government and politics main priority is not the people. Our rights are sometimes
forgotten and the power is in the government. We are a democracy and vote for our wants and
needs but when decisions are made, we sometimes are affected negatively in some ways. Our
unalienable rights are not considered in some situations by the people, or government, who are
supposed to protect them.
As you can see, our nation today forgets we have a Declaration of Independence that
should be a reminder that we have rights and laws that cannot be taken away. The Orlando
shooting is just one example of the many hate-crimes that have been committed just through
the envy people have in others being happy. Also, we the people, are the reason these rights
are not being fulfilled. We have to first accept that all men are created equal, and then we can
all be a country of freedom. We can be the land of opportunities, without violence, and we can
have our pursuit of happiness. It starts within ourselves, every single citizen. We need to revisit
this document to remember what we were promised, and how to get this right honored in the
world today, again.
