At Arts for Learning, we value the right of every child to have access to the arts and
the participatory experiences that unlock minds, expand lives and fulfill creative and
intellectual potential.

It takes a village to raise a child has been so widely

quoted as to verge on the clich, but there is no more
apt an expression to describe the importance of
community relationships on child development. Arts
for Learning is fortunate to have wonderful support
from donors like you and strong school and community
partners that ensure a true village approach to
providing children with rich and meaningful arts
experiences.
As we settle into our new location in the old IPS 27
building, Arts for Learning is eager to grow our village
by assuming an active role in the neighborhood
surrounding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Whether
its in our own backyard or throughout the state,
community is our focus. I invite you to explore a bit of
that impact in this annual report.
After 55 years as Indianas premiere arts in education
organization, we continue to partner with schools,
nonprofits, and corporations throughout the state to
share ideas and promote creative learning through
the arts. Arts for Learning certainly couldnt have
reached this milestone anniversary alone and so
we thank you for your encouragement and support.
We can continue to work together as a village to
ensure that the arts are a part of every childs life and
education.

2015 Arts Champion

Every year, Arts for Learning selects an Indiana teacher to honor as an Arts
Champion for his/her advocacy of the arts and advancement of creative
learning opportunities in the classroom. Katie Collier, Art Teacher at Carey
Ridge Elementary, was named the 2015 Arts Champion.
As the 2015 Arts Champion, I wish to express my gratitude and am
grateful for the opportunities this award has provided. My school, family
and I are sincerely thankful for your generosity and for giving me the
opportunity to further support the arts. Arts for Learning has inspired our
Carey Ridge Elementary teachers, school and community to implement
new innovative art activities that connect in-school and out-of-school
learning. We support curriculum project-based learning strategies to
better enhance critical thinking as well as self-directed learning in order for
students to become self-reliant, self-motivated, and life-long learners. This
occurs through many channels, such as exploring ebru, or Turkish marbling,
to celebrate creativity on International Dot Day; hosting Pinwheels for
Peace, a community installation focused on world peace and harmony for
International Peace Day; and wearing our PJs to school for Family Pajama
Day to raise awareness while providing support for art therapy programs at
Riley Hospital for Children.
I am excited to start planning our new curriculum as well as getting into the
dynamics of generating new creative art events. My enthusiasm is evident
in the long list of ideas I have already created in anticipation of next year.
I am especially excited about expanding guest speakers in the classroom
and look forward to working on innovative programs with Arts for Learning
and their teaching artists workshops.
I would like to thank Arts for Learning once again for the great privilege of
having been awarded the 2015 Arts Champion. Still today, I am overcome
by the honor. Thank you, Arts for Learning, for all your efforts in supporting
the arts.
