II.Course Description
The study of sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship
between language and its users. It is the field that studies the
relationship between language and society, between the use of
language and the social structures in which the language users
live. In other words, it is the study of language in relation to
social factors, that is, social class, educational level and type
of education, age, sex, ethnic origin, etc.
III. Course Objectives
In this course, the students study language from a social
perspective as well as explore the educational consequences
of linguistic and cultural diversity. Students will consider some
of the ways in which language in society can be systematically
researched and analyzed. This course addresses the sociocultural factors which influence language and attempts to
account for their effects on second language learning and
teaching. By the end of this course, it is intended that students
will have a good understanding on the existence of language in
society.
IV.

Activities
Students will learn the topics through in-and-out-ofclassroom activities. Class sessions will be in the form of
students presentation, catechizing and class discussion, and
lecturing. The students must in group write an article based on
the topic to be presented in front of the class. Then the class
will come to catechizing and lecturing session.
Besides, the students have to do independent reading and
do assignment as out-of-classroom activity.

V. Evaluation
Students final grade will be determined on the basis of
grades from midterm test (30%), final tests (30%), assignment
(25%), and active participation (15%) with the following

additional notes:
- Both midterm and final exams will be given as in-class
exams.
- No make-up exams will be given except for genuine
reasons of illness or under extraordinary circumstances.
