1.0 INTRODUCTION
This site is known as 21 Coombe Ridings and is last plot at the southernmost end the road in Kingston,
Surrey. Post Code KT2 7JU, Nation Grid Reference TQ 20318 70855.
The proposed development is to demolish the existing house, semi basement and garage, replacing it with
a larger dwelling complete with an extension and swimming pool to the western elevation.
This site currently sits on high ground with a shallow valley to the north; various small springs within this
valley form a stream which drains to the northeast. In light of the sloping nature of the site contiguous piled
retaining wall piles are proposed to enable the construction of the large dwelling on flat and level ground.
These pile design calculations cover the design of the contiguous piled retaining wall which is required for a
single level basement which covers a proportion of the northern building footprint. The design for the
contiguous piled retaining wall around the perimeter of the site has been provided under calculations of a
separate cover, as will the design for internal bearing piles that are assumed to be required. These
calculations have been prepared by Structure Consult Limited for and on behalf of Southern Piling Limited.
A site layout detailing the position of the proposed contiguous piled retaining wall sections is shown on
Figure 1, which is an annotated extract of the Avicam Homes Limiteds drawing Site Plan Indicating
Basement.

2.0 INFORMATION PROVIDED

2.1 Proposed Sections and Floor Plans
Details of the proposed retaining wall have been taken from the relevant drawings and specifications
provided. These were from Linear, consulting engineers for the project under their reference number 2338;
Hemsley Consulting, geotechnical consultants under their report reference number HC4743; along with
verbal and email communications with representatives of Southern Piling Limited.
The main documentation utilised is summarised below:

One wall section has been identified for this analysis and are labelled Wall Section 1 on Figure 1 - page 2.
This wall section runs the entire perimeter of the proposed single level basement and has been given the
piling platform level of 31.000mAD. Then with a structural slab of 28.050mAD, allowance for a 400mm thick
slab, 150mm of hardcore/blinding and additional allowance for unplanned accidental overdig, the
maximum excavation level is taken as 27.150mAD.
The section in question is not within close proximity of any of the existing retaining walls which hold back
the neighbouring propertys gardens. The proposed building shall also bear upon piles, subsequently this
section will only be modelled with the surcharge load of 10 kN/m which shall be taken as representative of
potential site traffic.

2.2 Ground Conditions

The ground conditions that were utilised for this pile design have been taken from the site investigation
report which was carried out by Hemsley Consulting Limited under their project reference HC4743, dated
10th November 2014.
This report contained the findings of two boreholes which confirmed site geology to a maximum depth of
20.0 metres, all with the addition of SPT N values and U100 triaxial results to depth.
Where applicable, the findings of this report have been bolstered by published geology; British Geological
Survey, 1:50 000 Scale, Solid and Drift Edition, Sheet No. 270 (South London).
The above confirmed the site soil profile as consisting of a nominal mantle of Topsoil and Made Ground
over Black Park Gravel to a depth of 1.5 metres. In turn this was underlain by stiff to very stiff dark brown
to grey sandy silty clay of the Claygate Beds, which continued to depth.
Topsoil / Made Ground

A nominal laminate of topsoil and made ground were encountered within the above boreholes. The topsoil
was recovered as a dark brown silty sandy topsoil with rootlets.
Black Park Gravel
In borehole one dark brown and orange silty sand with scattered gravel was encountered, grading into
orange brown sand and gravel. This was encountered to the maximum depth of 1.7 metres, however, this
strata was not present in borehole two.
Claygate Beds
The Claygate Beds were encountered directly beneath the Topsoil and Black Park Gravel as firm to stiff
orange brown and blue grey mottled sandy silty Clay. At depth this graded into a very stiff to hard blue silty
sandy clay, which continued to depth.
During the above investigation works ground water was encountered from 3.09 metres below ground.
However, as this site slopes considerably we anticipate that this is perched water and is not a true
representation of ground water level. For design purposes a water level of 28.000mAD has been taken. For
the high water check in the permanent condition, water shall be modelled as raising to formation level.
Where excavation works progress beneath the water table, dewatering will be required.
Borehole levels were not confirmed within the investigation report, subsequently they have been assumed
to be taken from the existing ground level; which has been given as 31.000mAD.

3.0 DESIGN PARAMETERS

3.1 Geotechnical
The pile design calculations have been based on the information provided. The soil parameters employed
have generally been taken from the information provided, but also supplemented where necessary from
published data and other ground investigation reports in the area. For the temporary conditions analysed
within the design, drained parameters have been considered for the Made Ground and Black Park Gravel
while un-drained parameters have been considered for the Claygate Beds. In the permanent condition the
design parameters for the Claygate Beds have been changed from un-drained to drained.
The sections shown on Figure 1 along with pages 8 and 9 detail the typical soil profile used in the analysis,
along with the taken soil parameters.
3.2 Construction Sequence

Piling operations are to be carried out from the piling platform level of 31.000mAD, followed by the
construction and adequate curing of the capping beam. Excavation works shall then progress to the
maximum excavation level of 27.150mAD to enable the construction of the basement slab and walls.
3.3 Structural Design Parameters

The contiguous bored pile retaining wall will be constructed using auger bored piling techniques with a C35
designed concrete pump mix and B (500N/mm) grade main reinforcement bars with helical shear links. A
minimum of 75 mm cover shall be provided to the main reinforcement, and shall be provided spacers.
The main structural design parameters used in the retaining wall analysis have been summarised in Table 1,
for 450mm diameter piles at 600mm centres.

3.4 Retaining Wall and Propping Geometry

Wall section one shall be considered as acting as a free cantilever member in the temporary stages of
construction, while the structural slab at basement level will act a prop in the permanent condition.
Table 2 presents the structural and geometrical properties of the propping that has been used in the design
of the retaining wall.

Should the construction sequence or propping system be changed from those assumed then the retaining
wall design will require re-assessment which could result in changes to the pile length and / or
reinforcement.

4.0 DESIGN METHODOLOGY

4.1 Geotechnical Analysis
The analysis has been carried out using Oasys FREW based upon EN 1997-1:2004 to determine the results.
This is for both ULS and SLS conditions using Sets M2 and M1 respectively.
The input and output data from the analyses are presented in Appendix A, with one set of FREW 19.2 runs
carried out for the ULS and SLS conditions, for each of the wall section considered. These check the overall
wall stability calculating a toe length in addition to the induced bending moments, shear forces and pile
deflections.
The SLS analysis represents the anticipated service state of the wall, along with its deflections.
Calculated wall displacements and corresponding program outputs may be considered to be an accurate
estimate of long-term movements, due to the following factors:
a) Geotechnical parameters, pile stiffness and surcharges are considered to be reasonably
conservative values. A more accurate assessment of wall displacements would require the input of
'actual' parameters to be obtained from more sophisticated laboratory testing.
b) The computer program does not consider the beneficial effects of structural elements such as the
capping beam.
c) The computer program is a two-dimensional analysis program and does not consider the beneficial
effects of geometrical features such as inside wall corners which increase the stiffness of the wall.
4.2 Individual Pile Section Structural Analysis

Reinforcement requirements have been analysed for the shear forces and bending moments indicated
within the FREW 19.2 outputs (Appendix A) and summarized in the wall schedule, (Table 4). Using the
Oasys ADCOL software, all bending moments and shear force calculations have been carried out in
accordance with BS 8110.
The results of the ADCOL analyses are given in Appendix B. For wall case 1 the concrete grade has been
taken as C35 and a worst case axial load has been taken as 0kN uplift.

5.0 SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND GENERAL COMMENTS

Summary of the calculated propping forces are detailed on Table 3, results of the separate wall analyses
are presented in Table 4 while the pile summary schedule indicating pile lengths and reinforcement is
presented in Table 5.
The detailed retaining wall analysis comprising the computer print outs are presented in Appendix A.
Reinforcement calculations comprising the computer printouts from the ADCOL design software and inhouse designed link reinforcement spreadsheets are presented in Appendix B.
