Personal response based on the short story-TSM
The Sound Machine, a story about Klausner, a man who works on a sound machine and he is a man who thinks
that pants can feel the cuts made by human by making sounds. Of course Klausners strange discovery is
unacceptable and ridiculous for the people around him such as Mrs Saunders and Dr Scott. Why do Mrs. Saunders
and Dr Scott think that Klaunser is crazy? Is it just because he thinks different from others and his idea is
distinctive? People seem to have problems accepting new ideas because new ideas usually clash with peoples belief
and new ideas contrast with our common perceptions toward certain things. Not only the characters in the story,
Mrs. Klausner and Dr. Scott have this problem but also ourselves. We tend to reject ideas that distinct from our
tradition. This is the mistake that we should vanish from now because creative ideas should not be discouraged. We
need these ideas to improve ourselves and make this world a better place. Therefore we need to be open-minded
and flexible in accepting fresh ideas. The sensitivity Klausner has for the plants tell us the importance of looking
after the plants as they are living things. It is noble to be sensitive to the pain of all the pain of all living things. In
our culture, we are taught to treat all living things with care without harming them. Hence we should repair what
damage we have already done to nature and have the feeling of love for all the living things including plants. We
need to respect other creatures life in order to live harmoniously in this world as what emphasize in our culture.

THE NECKLACE
Every student has their own interpretation and view when they read a short story. The selected short stories for
malaysian secondary school is form to generate the creative thinking and humanities value among our students.
One of the short story that give deep impact on me is 'The Necklace'. For me the necklace is all about be true,
honest, down to earth and gratefullness. Mathilde waste 10 years of her life by working to death just to replace
Madam Forestier's necklace that she borrowed and loss in a ball. The truth is, the necklace is not as expensive as
she thought. Mathilde should be honest to Madam Forestier at the first place that she loss the necklace and she
also has to realize her and her husband ability in spending their money.
I can say that this story shows the women's lust for wealthy. I think ball is very important occasion for french
women in that century, maybe it the only way they have their excitment. But i'm sure not all women like mathilde.

Personal response based on the short story-TN

The Necklace is about a woman by the name of Mathilde, who constantly longs for the life of the rich and elegance.
She never satisfies with what she has in the present and doesnt seem to appreciate them. The setting of this short
story is in Paris, France and this city is divided by social class. This story actually shows us the way people lived in
Paris during the nineteenth-century. People were determined by their social class. We can see that going to ball and
showing off prosperity are some of the culture of the higher class people in Paris. For those who are not from the
high class society, they still try very hard to fit into the society just to get more admiration from society. Mathilde is
definitely one of them who struggle to squeeze into the society. Like Mathilde, some Malaysians think that if they
get to mingle with the people who have high profile and status in the society, they will be respected and admired.
They have the wrong values in life because human should not be judged by their appearance and status but the
morals that live within them. I believe that hierarchy still exists in any society around the world. We cant deny that
until today, people are still measured by their social status. This is a culture for the whole world from the very
beginning. We might not realize it now because its not so obvious compare to those days. People need to know
that a persons value does not depend on how rich or poor he or she is. Besides, moral qualities are more
important than riches or talent. Most of us know about this theory but do not seem to practice it. The act of
clearing debts by Mathilde and Loisel is very creditable and of course in our culture, we have been advised not to
owe anyone money or things. Debts need to be clear once we are affordable no matter how difficult. This story
definitely helps me to understand the similarities between the old Western culture and our very own Malaysian
culture.

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

sorry to disturb...
i do agree with some of your points regarding the symbolism played by the Necklace. For me, although i'm a guy, i
do realize in my culture, i mean Malay culture, those jewelleries play a very significant role. As everybody can see,
woman exactly loves those jewelleries and i experienced it through the perspective of my family myself. In Malay
culture, jewllery is some kind of representing the wealth and status of a person. There also some people use
jewellery as an important thing that need to get passed from a generation to another generation of the family.
The Necklace is a very good story which can represent not only the women in French, but also around the world.
The only thing that may be differentiating Mathilde and other women in the world who has gone through similar
situation is she has a very loyal and caring husband. A very good examplar of a husband in the story. (I forgot his

name..hehe

) He did everything just to make his wife happy. Even he did not mad when Mathilde was hanging

around with another men until 4a.m in the morning!!! ( Malays please don't do that!!)
A question I would ask to
women out there, if u were Mathilde, and you know will lost the borrowed necklace, will you drag your husband
into the matter too?

THE SOUND MACHINE BY ROALD DAHL

Naturally, the story reminds me of the phrase, Dont judge a book by its cover. It is funny to think why such
phrase even existed in the first place because, it is of no use, people do like to judge others solely on their
appearances. Its in their nature. I apologize if I am being too straight-forward, but it is true, dont you agree?
Sometimes, why dont you give a person a benefit of a doubt that you could be wrong in judging him/ her in a
certain way? Yes, I understand. It is easier to forgive someone for being wrong than right. The story of The Sound
Machine bears the hallmark of all prejudice of mankind. Klausners peculiarities cost him to loose others confidence
towards him.

The Necklace, the story of a women, Matilde who never satiesfied with their own life but its all change when she

something...this how this story related to us...we will try to get something that more better than what we have
now..this situation we carry on until we said to ourselve...ENOUGH!!!
Being grateful of what we have is the most good ways to express our feeling_

Another interesting short story in the literature component is The Drovers Wife written by Henry Lawson. The
story is about the drovers wife who lives with her three small children and a dog called The Alligator. The wife has
to live in hardship without her husband because he is out for something or to work. At first, we might think that the
husband is irresponsible for he left his family for a very long time without even thinking of going home. He only
asked his brother to look after his family. It is true that he has to go out for work and it is also for the sake of the
family. But I still think that he shouldnt do that because his family still needs him for his attention and love,
especially his children If he keeps going out like that, there are possibilities that his children will forget him and
maybe they couldnt even recognize him. My father also used to go to Singapore to work as a labour there when I
was a child. But when time passed, he decided to stay at home and work here because he knows that his family
really needs his attention. Even though he do sent the money and other needs for us, I think it is different if he is
not around.
The mother, she is a very hardworking and responsible mother. She stayed up late at night and watched for her
children. She really loves and cares of her children. When she saw the snake in their house, she was really afraid
but she still tried to kill it to proect her family from danger. Here, we can see that she take her husbands
responsibility of taking care of the family.
In this story, we found that the son, Tommy is very responsible toward his mother. He is willing to do anything to
protect his mother. At the end of the story, we knew that Tommy had really upset with his father and he decided
not to be like his father. He doesnt want to be a drover like his father because he doesnt want to leave his mother
and his family just like his father did.

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

In short story The Drovers Wife by Henry Lawson, it tells us about the plight of the bushwoman. The drovers
wife, her four children and their dog are alone in their isolated house a wooden house in the Australian bush. The
bush consists of stunted, rotten native apple - trees and the nearest house is about nineteen miles away. She has
two boys and two girls, the eldest a boy of eleven and the youngest a baby. Her husband is away driving sheep and
has been away for six months. In this text, we can see when one lives in a harsh environment and in isolation; one
has to rely on oneself to survive. The bushwoman has managed to survive the hostile environment. It is a test of
endurance and courage. Her self-reliance makes her a character to be admired. To survive, one must develop some
skills and adapt to one's environment. One must be strong, brave, independent, resilient and be patient in enduring
hardship. But, the most important element, we must stand united as a family.

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

Agree with you ~elliemanan~
Throughout "The Drover's Wife" short-story, we get a very good perspectives of a woman/mother. in the story, we
learn that the mother is a gaunt and sun-browned woman, and that her life in the bush started when she married a
squatter at the age of 18. As a girl-wife she had hated the lonely life in the outback, but as time passed by, she
grew used to it. When the drought forced her husband to go droving, she had been left alone with the children and
the problems a life in the bush would bring. Her struggles have been many. Once she had to fight a bush fire
threatening to burn down her house. Another time a mad bullock had besieged the house for a day. Then there was
a flood which had ruined a very important dam. In addition to this, snake had been a threat to the woman and her
children. If she does not kill it, the snake can bite one of the children, which will be a disaster since it is nineteen
miles to the nearest neighbor. The child would be dead before they could get help. This remind me to my mother
when she protect me from touching a snake which i had mistaken as my father's belt (when i was young k?
hehehe.) Due to this, i believe that all mothers in the world have the characteristics of a good mother --- brave,
self-reliant, strong maternal instinct, caring and etc. and etc. just to protect her beloved ones.. love all the mother
in the world!!!

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

hi everyone..i would like to share some opinion with all of you regarding the short story 'The Sound Machine'
provided in the literature component...i think this story is a good example for us to examine and understand
others..'The Sound Machine' is about Klausner who believes that he hear the sound of roses in his neighbour's
garden..it's actually quite ridiculous for us to believe him as we haven't hear such sounds from plants right? that's
why i said we can understand others through this story..it actually makes us think that people have their own
beliefs and it may be different from ours..i wonder what will happen if everything in this world can
speak..hehe..back to the story, everyone doesn't believe Klausner with his machine and think that he might be
crazy..it actually reflects the real situation in our daily live where we see people who is different as 'they might
have some unconnected wires in their head'..hehe..who knows whether the plants can actually produce sounds
that can't be heard by the people like us?

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

hello ann_red..Well.. seems like we have same perspective towards MatildeI also do dont like the way Matilde
thinks about her life and absolutely agree with you that Matilde should accept the fate and enjoy the life with her
family. She cant think that all beautiful women supposed to live in luxury because all the fate is arranged by god.
My point of view:
The necklace is one of the short story that insight me into other cultural (western culture). The story gives me a
clear feature about French lifestyle during 18s. By reading this story, I think that ball is an important occasion to
their culture because everyone wants to go to. In my opinion, their culture is distinctive from us. Women in that
time are exhausting in dancing with other men until morning whereas their husband had been sleeping since
midnight in a little deserted anteroom. she suppose to dance with her husband and not left her husband alone
bacause her husband was sacrifice a lot for her..how bad is she right? Differ from our culture, specially those who
are muslims forbid to waste their time with other men. Our culture not encourages women to go to party until
midnight because their roles are to take care about the husband and family. Although nowadays women in our
culture are freer in socialize, but still in limited one..

The Drover's Wife offers us a story that take place in western and how they live their routine life. The story
happened on one day where the father went out droving for a long time. So, the mother (the drover's wife) and her
children lived on their own. Their home located in somewhere that far away from other houses and surrounded by
bushes. So, if anything happen they need to depend on their own family members. From this story, we know the
wife, the mother, the woman is trying to protect her family, her children. Although, she is a woman, at any cost she
will make sure of her family safety. She is a very brave woman.
Woman even though they are physically weak than man, they can become stronger in desperate situations like this
because they want to protect their love ones. But, I wonder why people nowadays willing to throw their baby away,
we always heard and read about baby found dead in garbage, floating in the river etc. Where is the love of a
mother?
Is it extinct in their heart? Poor these little babies who are born to live like other normal baby but their
own mother (the one who give birth to them who actually the one who will raise them with love) killed them! Owh,
its to harsh.. I mean end their children life. How could they do that?

Dear sha_akma.............
As a whole,i agree with your opinion saying that Malthide is a selfish lady as she never take her husband's feelings
into account. She does whatever that she thinks is good for her. pleasures her. But, when you said that "if she
could realise it earlier, she won't have to suffer that way," i think i have a different opinion. It's true that she went
through a tough time, working hard to pay off her debt. But,undeniably, she learned a lot from that experience.
She learned to be independent, realistic and whatnot. Just imagine if she did not go through that tough time, or
perhaps if she did not lose the necklace. Do you think she will be able to turn over a new leaf? Therefore, if we
were to look from a different perspective, that's not really a suffering. In fact, it's a learning path. Half glass full ?
Or half glass empty? It all depends on how we look it...

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

"The Necklace" is one of my favorite short stories in the collection of short stories for upper secondary schools.
The story started with a description of Mathilde's appearance and social background. It also described how Mathilde
is not satisfied with what she had and dreamt of a luxuries house equipped with fancy furniture and tableware. Her
husband, however, was a modest man whom always cared and helpful to Mathilde. One day, her husband brought
an invitation card from the Minister to a Ball. For the first time she refused the invitation but when Monsieur Loisel
gave 400 francs for her to buy a gown, she accepted it right away. But, she still felt unsatisfied with her
appearance. Therefore, she went to her best friend's house, Madame Forestier to lend some jewels to complete her
looks. Finally, she took a diamond necklace and wear it to the ball. At the ball, she was treated well by all of the
men who attended the ball. She felt satisfied and delighted to the fact that she is beautiful and charming enough to
be pleased by others. But, this happiness did not stay long. When the couple arrived at home, Mathilde realize that
she had lost the necklace. They looked everywhere but they could not find it. Feeling afraid to tell her friend,
Madame Forestier, the couple went to look for the same necklace and plan to buy it. To their surprise, the necklace
that they found cost 36 thousand francs. Therefore, they bought the necklace and the hard labour of ten years
began. Monsieur and Madame Loisel started working hard to pay for the debt and it took ten years. Finally, after
ten years, Mathilde felt relieved but still thinking about what will happen if she did nto lose the necklace. One day,
when she was walking in the Champs Elysees. to refresh herself after labour, she bumped into her friend, Madame
Forestier. Shocked and bewidered with the new appearance of Madame Loisel, she asked her how did she turned
into that way. Mathilde blamed Forestier for her changes. M. Forestier did not understand at first but when Mathilde
explained everything, she was so moved and said " Oh, my poor Mathilde! Why, my necklace was paste! It was
worth at most only five hundred francs!"
My opinion of the story are Mathilde was greedy and ungrateful with what she already had. It is not like she is poor,
but she already had a good way of life. She should not have lied to M.Forestier about the necklace but instead she
should tell her the truth no matter what the cost it will be. She should be responsible for the things that she did in
a right way.
I know that women fancies jeweleries and craves a better life but they can still obtain both without going
overboard. Also, we should always be grateful with what we have and must not tell lies to our friends.

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

The Necklace_Guy De Maupassant.
From this story i've found that Mathilde is a ungrateful women who is never satisfies in what her had in her life.
She always want this and that and iet seems never enough to her.She never think about her husband who had to
work hard to fullfill all she's needs.
After she loss the necklace, she had to work hard for ten years to replace the necklace...but at last she found out
that the necklace not really expensive as she thought and false one.So maybe she had learned something from
that.
I like admire her husband Mr.Loisel who is very gentleman, loving and very patient man..he never complain for what
his wife had done to him.
In our culture and as a muslim we must be grateful and appreciate what we had in our life and never
complained. One more thing we must spend our money wisely and never waste it to buy unuseful things.

dearest teddybear..Ooopss..teddysuera..hehehe..
i do agree with you in some point about Mathilde. She is ungrateful woman and wife. But in the terms of never
satisfied in what she had in life, i have a different view towards it. Human always never satisfied in whatever they
have in their life, right? could you please think of something that you really satisfied of? i mean, of course, we have
to be very grateful to our God, for all the things that He gives to us. But in some points, we have to have a sense
that wanted and needed more than what we got and of course la in the good things, so as to makes us keep
struggling and striving for it!

I'm not saying that we dont have to be grateful. it's not like that.

and for talking as a woman, me myself, i confess, i'm a bit materialistic

i love things, money so much. if you
give me 1 thousand, i could just spend it a day.. huhu..trust me. well, what i'm gonna say here, actually Mathilde
do experienced the charecteristic of woman so much..huhu..

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

The Drover's Wife by Roald Dahl is a story about a drover's wife whom was left by his husband and lived in a tworoomed house surrounded by stunted , rotten, native apple trees. She lived with 4 children ; 2 daughters and 2
sons. One day, her children were playing about the house. Suddenly, they saw a snake. The snake went into a
wood-heap and later went into the house. This caused the woman to feel fear because she remembered that a son
of her brother-in-law had been bitten by a snake and died. Therefore, she did a few things to protect her child
while her black, yellow-eyed dog, Alligator, watched the crack. Both of them were waiting for the snake to come out
and then, at the break of dawn, the snake came out. It nearly got away but Alligator managed to get a hold of the
snake's tail and pulled it out while the woman hit it until it died. Then, she threw the snake into the fireplace,
watched by the woman and her eldest child.
From my own point of view, this is a story about how a woman's effort in protecting her children against the
danger. The danger here referred to the snake that the woman believed was a deathly threat to the whole family.
She took protective measures and waited patiently until the snake came out and killed it. I think a mother will
automatically becomes protective and defending when a danger try to approach her family. Also, love and fear of
losing loved ones are also the reason of a mother to act solely and bravely on her own.
Secondly, from my own perspective, it is a mother's duty to be responsible, brave and thoughtful for her own
family. In the case of the drover's wife, she must protect her children no matter how fearful she felt about the
snake's presence. This type of protection does not just apply to humans but animals do the same thing too.
Furthermore, a mother should always be authoritative and forbid her children from doing dangerous things in order
to not let her children from getting into trouble.

I like very much this short story, The Drovers Wife. It much relate to me and also other people who have mother
or wife. This story shows the culture of Australian bush. Even this story happen at there, but Im really sure the
same story happen at the whole world. The mother, her children and the hard, poor and pity daily lifestyle. This
short story shows how the pity mother who left by his husband for taking sheep to the market survive and taking
care of her children for whole six month in the freaky bush area. As we know the mother was brave when hitting
the snake until die for protecting their children. Here was show that women Australian bush was very brave. Maybe
because of the environment factor. Is it true? I do not know but the narrator wants to tell us that the pity and
poor women still can protect her family. We as Malaysian could take this value to encourage single mother who
have died their husband and need to survive for raising their children.

As mentioned in your personal view on 'The Necklace' story, we have the same thinking and opinion about the lady
named 'Mathilde'. Well, look how poor she is at the end of the story. Whereas the beauty that she proud of wasn't
found in the heart, nor in the eyes anymore. She has to suffer more than ever, just because she never satisfied
with her life before.
For other ladies for sure, having a husband like Loisel would be a pleasant gift from God. But for Mathilde,
everything seems not enough for her. She always dreamt about being rich people and wants to be just like them,
wearing beautiful clothes, expensive jewelries and so on. She knew and realized that her husband wouldn't afford
to give all the things that she wants, but still, she stay to be ungrateful wife. She always put her husband to feel
guilty whenever he failed to fulfill her wish then makes Loisel put more effort on his work and forget his own dream
just to please Mathilde's desire.
When it comes to the time that she've lost the necklace, afterwards she learnt the real lesson. Their condition
change from poor to poorer, and for ten years, they have to work hard to pay all the debts that they have used to
replace the lost necklace. The incident really changed Mathilde's personality after all, but it is too late. There's
nothing left to do other than waiting for their independence day.
At the moment she knew from Mdm. Forestier that the necklace was fake, I can imagine how she feel. If I was at
her place, perhaps I might get a heart attack! Haha.. You got served! Therefore, we need to be grateful and
appreciate what we have in our life. Don't be like Mathilde. Other moral value is that, whenever we do any
mistakes, we have to admit what we've done so that there won't be any trouble such being faced by the couple.

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

HI everyone...My favourite short story is... The Drovers Wife. It much relate to people who have mother or wife
just like us. . This story shows the culture of Australia. BUt this story not only happen in Australia but it's happen
all over the world. Maybe in malaysia also got story like that.
The mother, her children and the hard, poor and pity daily lifestyle. This short story shows how the pity mother
who left by his husband for taking sheep to the market survive and taking care of her children for whole six month
in the freaky bush area. As we know the mother was brave when hitting the snake until die for protecting their
children. Wow... she was very brave. How? This is what we call by mother's love.
The narrator wants to tell us that the pity and poor women still can protect her family. So we us a daughters and
sons must know how to appreacite mothjer's love.

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

The Drover's Wife...
This story tell us about how a wife being left from her husband(drover) for about 6 month...
The drover's wife lived in her own and take care of their chidrens..Their house is very far away from others and
surrounde by the bushes.
The drover's wife is a very patient wife, caring, loving, protecting and brave mother..She protect her childrens and
willing to do anything to make sure that her childrens safe.
She prove to the readers that women not as week as what people think..women will do anything to protect the
person they love..
I don't like her husband because, eventhough he had to leave his wife for a long time to find money..why he don't
send someone like her brother or relative to look for his family. How can he left his family just like that without
thinking of their safety..they don't have neighbours nearest them..
as a father the drover must think his responsibility to his family..I think all culture agree that the husband should
be responsible to his family..

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component ( Personal Response )

The Drover's Wife...
Apparently this story highlighting a wife whom left over by her husband ( The Drover who drove away ) for about 6
month. The drover's wife lived by her own accompanied by her childrens and a loyal dog.Their house was far away
from the others and surrounded by the bushes.( maybe kangaroos lives nearby their house ).The wife is pretty
sure very patient, caring, loving, and protecting in terms of being protective to her children. She protects her
childrens and willing to sacrifice in order to ensure her childrens safety.
She prove to the readers that women is strong as well as men.Womens willing to do anything to protect the person
they love and care about. In the story, the husband wasnt highlighted maybe on many reasons or pupose. But on
a condition he can best describe for irresponsible either responsible because the writer didnt give clear reason for
his misabsent. So we cant straight away punish him.

What a great thought about this story. Regarding to your Q, What do you feel if your father is not around for a long
time? I think it will be totally weird especially if the father leaves his children since they were very young and dont
even know about the warmth of fathers love. When I read this story, i was totally respected with the drovers wife.
She leads a hard life without her husband which is away long periods of time. She tend to cope with all the
problems that she faced by herself and she doesnt complain about it. Its rare to find such a woman in these
worlds.
In this story, we also can look how Tommy is very sensitive about her mothers feelings. He tried his best to
comfort his mothers heart which is full with sadness and loneliness. I do hope so that all of us can do the same
things. We do love our mother, dont we? The one who give birth and risen we up till this day with so much hurts
and difficulties should at least get loves from their own child. Dont you agree?

Re: Short Stories in the Literature Component

The Drover's Wife..

This story reminds me of my childhood when we were left with our mother alone by our father because of the duty.
My late father was armed forces who worked for the military always left us for quite sometime. The Drovers Wife is
a story about a woman who is left alone with her four children by the husband. Her husband, the drover need to go
droving, away from home. The story is all about the mother who has the quality of caring, bravery and protective.
The main character in the story is the mother which no name given by the author. The mother was watching for the
snake to reappear and trying to kill it before the snake could do harm to her children. With the help of their dognamed Alligator, finally, the mother managed to kill the snake and no one was bitten by the snake. The story is
quite similar to my childhood story especially when it tells about the difficulties. The mother in the story resembles
to my mother in my childhood story. Instead of attacked by the snake, I was attacked by an adult monkey. The
story tells us how a mother with her nature instinctive love and bravery who protected her children while the
husband is away from home. In the story, the author did not mention about the mother ever grumbles or moans or
complains of her husband. She only takes care of the children and do what she think a mother should do.
What is so interesting and significant in the story was the son who is if understand his mothers feeling. He feels
like her mother is responsible to anything happening to them. Even though his mother does not show the difficulty
or upset, the child thinks that the father should not leave her mother alone for a long time. The son is showing his
empathy, consoling his mother by telling his mother that he would never go droving.
I think the story is about an ordinary life and it is very common that we hear the husbands leave the wives to work
or look for the jobs. I admire the mothers characters as she does things as expected without showing upset.
Whereas for the son, I think he is a wise boy who knows how to make his mother feels better when his mother
faced a hard situation
thank you mother for everything...
