Peer Mediation Plan

In the event of conflict in the classroom this document seeks to provide steps to
remedy the situation and improve student relationships in the classroom.

1) It is the responsibility of the educator to halt the behavior and separate the
two parties. Typically, this is done by asking one student to step outside and
get some water so that both parties can cool down. In the event of a physical
conflict seek support from the front office or security.
2) Communicate with both parties separately and identify the cause and result.
3) Listen to the needs of both parties, separately. Explain that the teacher would
like both parties to meet, explain their needs, and apologize for their
behavior. Directly teach affective statement method as described below to be
used in step 4.
4) Set up a meeting (in class or outside) in which teacher monitors the situation,
ensuring that both parties explain and apologize. Students should
communicate using the affective statement model.
5) Outline future steps to prevent or resolve behavior (e.g. new seats, asking for
breaks, phone calls home).

Affective Statement Model:

Emotions should be basic and non-targeted (e.g. I feel sad, angry, frustrated)
The described actions should not be accusatory and should strive to be as
objectively described as possible.
The third component should be constructed using an I statement to avoid
focusing blame on other party.

I feel _______emotion________ when _____action______ happens because ______I

statement_____.

Apology Model:
I am sorry for ____action/caused feeling____. In the future I will try to _____new
behavior_____.

Avoid any and all excuses for behavior.

Accept responsibility and emphasize new behavior that shows apology was
sincere.
