1. Identify Areas for Coaching

has identified and wants to work on?
What are the school wide initiatives or
expectations that all teachers are working
on? Is there potential for improvement
and positive impact for students?
2. Identify Standards and Criteria

Ask yourself: What teaching standards
align with their goal area? What rubric or
evaluation tool can you use to direct their
improvement? Is this an authentic and
valuable tool to your client? Can you
create a tool with your client to use if
need be?
3. Determine a SMARTE goal
(Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: How does your client feel
about the goal setting process? Have they
had negative or positive experiences with
professional goal setting in the past? Is the
goal the two of you created strategic and
specific, measurable, attainable, resultsbased, time-bound, and equitable?
4. Identify High-Leverage
Activities (Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: How can I begin the
brainstorming process with my client to
identify activities that will guide them
toward reaching their goal? What
additional activities do I have in mind
after I have reflected on the work so far to
add?
5. Break Down the Learning
(Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: Where is my client in their
learning? Who is my client as a learner?
