1. Identify Areas for Coaching
(Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: Whats the big picture?
What are a few general areas your client
has identified and wants to work on?
What are the school wide initiatives or
expectations that all teachers are working
on? Is there potential for improvement
and positive impact for students?
2. Identify Standards and Criteria
(Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: What teaching standards
align with their goal area? What rubric or
evaluation tool can you use to direct their
improvement? Is this an authentic and
valuable tool to your client? Can you
create a tool with your client to use if
need be?
3. Determine a SMARTE goal
(Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: How does your client feel
about the goal setting process? Have they
had negative or positive experiences with
professional goal setting in the past? Is the
goal the two of you created strategic and
specific, measurable, attainable, resultsbased, time-bound, and equitable?
4. Identify High-Leverage
Activities (Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: How can I begin the
brainstorming process with my client to
identify activities that will guide them
toward reaching their goal? What
additional activities do I have in mind
after I have reflected on the work so far to
add?
5. Break Down the Learning
(Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: Where is my client in their
learning? Who is my client as a learner?
What is their current zone of proximal
development? What scaffolds does my

client need to build on their skills?

6. Determine Indicators of
Progress (Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: After returning to the goal
with my client, what data and evidence
did we agree on to gather to show their
progress toward their goal?
7. Develop Coaching Theories of
Action (Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: What is my rationale behind
the strategies my client is learning in
order to improve student learning? Is it
specific and explicit in its reasoning? Is it
a simple if-then statement? What do I
need to do to in order for my client to
reach their goal? What are the coaching
strategies I will try? How will my clients
practice shift? What are the specific
strategies that could possibly result in
systems of change?
8. Determine Coachs Goals
(Aguilar, 2013).
Ask yourself: Using the transformational
coaching rubric, what coaching practices
do I need to focus on in order to best
support my client? What are my personal
reflections on my coaching skills so far?
Have I been consistent in my application
of adult learning theories? Where do I
need to grow and develop in order to meet
the needs of my client?
9. Compile Resources (Aguilar,
2013).
Ask yourself: What texts or resources
(articles, books, curriculum guides,
workshops, trainings, and online
trainings) can I use to draw from or share
with my client?
