One is to synthesize the chemical composition (C17 H21
NO4). This is highly unsuccessful and very costly. The second is to make Cocaine Hydrochloride (HCl). First you must find a coca plant that contains a high enough cocaine alkaloid concentration to be able to separate it. There are over 200 types of Erythroxylum (coca) plants. Only two of the fifteen Erythroxylum plants can be harvested because of their higher levels of the cocaine alkaloid. The coca Species and the Novogranatense Species and only two varieties of each plant can be harvested. (4 total) The percentage of cocaine alkaloid present is about 0.2 to 1%. The plant only grows in S. America and is hard to distinguish from non-cocaine alkaloid bearing Erythroxylum plants. After finding the plant, you must pick the leaves when they have a dingy yellow color and dry them in the sun. Be careful, any rain and the alkaloid will break down from mold. Now you must make coca paste. Combine leaves with water and sodium carbonate; this will allow you to extract the cocaine alkaloid into kerosene. This water immiscible solvent (kerosene) acts to extract water insoluble cocaine alkaloids from the mixture. Agitate the leaves; this is what is being preformed when you see people stomping on leaves in a water mix in the movies. Cocaine alkaloids and kerosene will separate from water and leaves. Strain off the leaf remnants and gunk. Now the alkaloids must be extracted from the kerosene. Do this by adding a dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid mix then filter. Then add Potassium permanganate and let stand for 4-6 hours. Filter the paste and add ammonia. A precipitate will be formed. This is referred to as Cocaine Base. Let dry. Now you must convert the cocaine base to cocaine hydrochloride (HCl). Soak the Base in Acetone and filter. Add diluted Hydrochloric acid or Ether and a precipitate will form. Take the white crystals and dry under lamps. This is pure cocaine hydrochloride. Chop and snort, serves all.
