Maybe we can’t teleport yarn yet, but Knitscewe has something almost 2s coo! in store—startng this year, the magazine will be released quarterly. That means a new issue every three months What it means is that we're here to stay. You mgt wondes, who ate ee? Each issue of Knitscene is put together by a small § staff, tucked away ina lite & office on the third floor of § Interweave headquarters in Loveland, Colorado, The Knitscene staff hhas always been a subset of the Inerweaze Knits stafl. No more! With our new status, we are our own team, All 3wo of us. ‘Technically, there are two-and-a-half of us dedicated to Rnitscene. Plus half an art director. So that makes three. You get my point. And actually, T work in a home office about 1,500 miles away from Loveland, But I travel to Colorado several times year for one very special reason—photo shoots. For this issue, [ bought a ‘bunch of weird stuff from a craft store. Garlands of moss balls, for instance. We suspended them in front of the set for “Don’t Steck Me” (pages 20-23) and played their shadows across the backdrop. It’s not as successful as the newspaper set for the Debbie O'Neill collection (pages 6-9), but it gives you an idea of how simple tricks can have cool effects. ‘And that’s what we want Knitscone to exemplify: simple- but-clever knitting can lead to cool results. ‘Take Talitha Kuomi’s two-piece vest (page 12) with its fronts and back ‘yoke worked all in one strip to show off the yarn. Or Melissa ‘Wehrle’s tee, also worked in minimal pieces (one, actually) with just a bit of internal increasing to make its cowineck. All the projects in “Don’t Steck Me” take simple colorwork and apply it to constructions that don’t require stecking or working in rows. ‘The projects in “Belted” (pages 38-41) show off what a Tong bit of knitting can do when tied around your waist, ‘You can knit this stuff. And it will look good. Thope you enjoy this issue and the remaining three to come out this year, I can already share some info on the Summer issue: garter stitch, cowgirls, and butterflies. A few of Debbie’s favorite things The golden retle: Knit ttnto others as you world have them knit tunto You. This is Debbie O'Neill's cosign philosophy in a nutshell. A software engineer who "stum- bled into designing” about thirteen years ago, Debbie first designs knits she would want to wear herself. The approach seems to have worked. To date, Debbie has pub- lished over 100 pattems and eared legions of devoted fans. doer Debbie says she never set out to be a design- er. She learned to knit in college from a friend who was a knitting novice herself. This method of learning left really big gaps in her knowledge, but the experience also allowed her to tackle projects that would normally only be attempted by experts. Debbie's first project was ain ited sweater; her second was an Icelandic colorwork pullover—one she still owns, "Nobody told me it would be hard, so | just knit i!” she admits. by Laura Birek ‘Stoneldage ~ Pres Meganiies Download ty Tus POF Debbie began designing after a local yarn shop asked her to teach classes, "I was very insecure about being able to give people their money's worth,” she says. “So | had this philosophy that if! was going to teach, I was never ever going to teach from a published patttem— was always going to come up with {an original pattem for anything | taught.” 6 knitseene.com Release Storshlags & Fantumag agenes for All ea a ee ‘Storeldage ~ Pres Meganiies Dewulued ty Thus POF teauat 02 Paperboy Cardigan yarn Page 47 8. knitscene.com "Though she wrote original patterns for reaching, it took a fortuitous meeting to launch Debbie into the publishing world, Marilyn King of Black Abbey Yarns was visiting Debbie's LYS in Boulder, Colorado, when she saw a pullover on display. “That is a gorgeous pattern, What is it?” asked Marilyn. Debbie admitted it was her own pattern she had sub: mitted to a contest, but it had only won an honorable mention, “Write it up as a pattern, and D' sell it!” Marilyn responded, This pattern became Debbie's Emerald Isle Cable Pullover, her first publicly avail- able pattern Since then, Debbie has published over 100 pat- terns in a number of magazines, books, and on her own website, Nutty Creations. Debbie's most popu- lar pattern on Ravelry is the Heather Hoodie Vest, published in Knitscene Fall 2009. This vest really struck a chord, much to Debbie's delight. “It was Debbie gushes. While designing it, she thought, “This is totally something I would, have in my wardrobe. I hope other people will like it too.” With over 3,500 favorites and 650 projects on Ravelry, she doesn’t have to hope anymore! In her collection for this issue of Knitscene, Deb- bie wanted to honor her golden rule by sticking to the things she loves most about knitting. “My favorite things are texture, lace, cables, and twisted stitches." ‘This collection serves as a reflection of these favorite things while maintaining Debbie's usual simple-but- smart approach and also working as transition pieces from winter to spring. ‘The Belvedere Cardigan not only bridges the gap between seasons but also between climates. It's knit in what Debbie considers a neutral red—one that can be worn with almost anything, In fact, Debbie's whole collection is made with, yarn that can work as neutrals, The Paperboy Cardi gan, a boyfriend-siyle piece perfe by the fireplace, is in a green that also can be worn with a variety of eolors. Beautiful in its simplicity yet detailed in its unusual construction, Debbie's Piccadill Pullover hhas saddle shoulders and a lace panel that add inter: est to an otherwise classic shape. Knit in a cotton/ \woo! blend, the sweater is another piece one can wear throughout the year. Finally, her socks combine both the texture of towisted stitches and lace details. Knit with a M: clinetosh yarn, the design is a great canvas for the beautiful semi-solid hand-dye In addition to her published patterns, Debbie recently wrote The Stitch Collection: A Box of Portable Guides to Knit Stitches (Lave Books, 2010). If Debbie hhas her way, there will be more books in her future ““Thave several more book ideas in mind,” she says. The Bandha Hoodie Pattern gauge is 18 stitches and 28 rows to 4" (or 4% stitches and 7 rows to 1"), Adjusting the width of the sleeve cap Ina raglan worked in the round like the Bandha Hoodie, the cap fabric of the sleeve is interdependent with the yoke shape. Because of this relationship, customizing the cap has broader implications for the whole garment. In a design like the Rayon ‘ant Pullover, altering stitch and row counts in the cap will disrupt the lace pattern of the yoke. In the Bandha Hoodi because the pattern is ll stockinett, i's easier to tweak the cap shaping —but remember to consider the shaping of the front and back and the yoke depth whenever modifying the cap in a raglan, Ifyou are broad-shouldered like me, more fabric across the neck edge of the sleeve cap will help raglan seams stay centered at the imaginary line from neck to underarm crease. You can achieve more fabric across the neck edge of the cap in a top= ddown raglan by casting: on just one or two more stitches for the sleeve sections of the yoke, or adding a few more extra stitches as increases near the top of the sleeve cap (Figure 2).
