The syllabus concerned with the application of curriculum in the classroom.

For Rodgers
The syllabus concerned with the content in a given course, a small part of the total school
program. The curriculum is far broader concept.
The relationship between syllabus and materials:
Concrete part of the syllabus and an instrument used to fulfil the goal of the syllabus.

Types of syllabus:
Grammatical syllabuses: as the language is a grammatical structure, the grammatical
syllabus introduced grammatical rules, graded according to difficulty and importance.
Lexical syllabuses: identify a target vocabulary to be taught.
Skill syllabuses: how to equip students to use language for purpose (reading/ writing,
listening/ speaking). // macro-skills and non-linguistics objectives //

Functional-notional syllabuses: the input is selected and graded according to communicative

function. It aims to enhance interreaction and communication.
Content syllabuses: teach content with the target language (language is a tool to teach
content)
Task-based syllabuses: it consists of tasks and activities that learner will engaged in the class
in the target language and it interests in the process of learning.
We can distinguish tow models of syllabuses:
Product-oriented syllabuses (concerned
with the content)

Process-oriented syllabuses (concerned

with the process)

There are some syllabuses that were accepted and adopted in teaching language learning such
as grammatical and lexical syllabuses, others were not accepted and adopted such as taskbased and content syllabus.
The inclusion of non-linguistic objectives in syllabus:
This model usually includes a list of non linguistics objectives, such as learning strategies,
affect cultivation (motivation, interests, and confidence), thinking skills and cultural
understanding.
The aim of this syllabus is to develop a person as a whole and not only the language
knowledge and skill.
When making a syllabus, they follow a method of teaching and they should design assessment
of students performance, so they created a multi-syllabus that incorporate features of
currently popular syllabuses. Ex: a grammatical syllabus with functional syllabus presented
functionality.
