STALIN EDITION

Stalins political policies were

implemented in order to execute his
economic policies. His economic
policies were to pull the Soviet Union up
to the level of global powers like the US,
England, and Germany. His political
policies served to bring his economic
goals to light as their backbone.

ECONOMIC POLICIES
5 year plan: the collectivization of farms
and major industrialization in order to catch
up to advanced countries. The rapid
industrialization was to be supported by
socialized agriculture (collective farms).
The Five Year Plan was shortened too a
Four Year Plan and was declared complete
in 1932. The fulfillment was more
psychological than statistical.

POLITICAL POLICIES
Stalinism: the specific form of
communism Stalin used in the
Soviet Union. Stalin focused
on establishing a successful
marxist society in one country
instead of theorizing world
revolution, aggravation of
class struggle, and shutting
down any political opposition.

From left to right, label the boxes: economic policies,
political policies, absence of free press, and violation
of human rights. You will describe how Stalin used or
implemented these things in Russia. In the two middle
boxes, you will describe how the the boxes they

connect to are related. In the goal box, you

will explain Stalins overall goal and how these

four things helped him achieve this. You may

use a separate piece of paper if you need more

room, just keep a similar format.

The censorship of the media and

published works made it easier for Stalin
to commit these violations of human
rights. If people cant talk about it, then
they cant do anything about it. If you
followed the rules of censorship, you
probably wouldnt be subject to gulags or
prison. But censorship was so vague
that anyone could be caught accidentally
being an enemy of the state.

ABSENCE OF FREE PRESS

Much of the press was censored
based on specific guidelines.
Published works could not
include: failure to positively
promote the working class,
religious propaganda, opposition
to revolutionary class struggle,
or promote national hatred.
Anything published could not
contain harmful material that
questioned the Soviet message.

GOAL
Stalins goal was to gain and maintain as
much power as he could and, when that
happened, to solidify the Communist Party
in the Soviet Union for as long as possible.
His political and economic policies worked in
unison to make the Soviet Union powerful
and productive and make it a top global
power. Censorship and the violation of
human rights worked together to shut down
any opposition to Stalin, politically and by
civilians. This allowed Stalin to retain all his
power, unopposed and unmatched. This
also allowed him to execute his policies in
order to make communism the ruling
political party for as long as possible. Again,
because no one was in his way to stop
communism, this was his was of keep all of
the political power to him self.

VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Three main violations: deportation,
famine, the great purge, and the
gulags. Masses of people were
deported officially for separatism,
resistance to soviet rule, and
German collaboration. About 43
percent of these people died from
disease or malnutrition. The
Ukraine was forced to produce 1/3
of the grain for all of Russia. This
meant, if they couldnt, they had to
give up their livestock. This lead to
mass famine where many died and
some turned to cannibalism. The
great purge was a system of
eliminating groups from the nation
who were dangerous or were
opposition to Stalin. Millions were
arrested, killed, or sent to labor
camps. Some of the trials were
rigged just to get the people out of
the way. The Gulags were labor
camps and colonies were
convicted were sent to perform
mandatory labor. Gulags were
brutal and many of the prisoners
were just people Stalin didnt want
in his such as political opponents
and priests and nuns.
