VGELE Screed Technology

High-Power Compaction (HPC)

VGELE High Compaction Technology Achieves Highest Density

The Facts: VGELE High Compaction Technology

VGELE set standards in terms of compaction: perfected technology together with the ultimate in materials for
manufacture of screed components guarantee the outstanding performance and reliability VGELE high compaction
systems are known for. The tamper provides for optimum precompaction of the mix. Tamper speed and stroke length
can be set up and adjusted precisely to match flow of mix, kind of mix and layer thickness.

High compaction is crucial when it comes to perfectly build up a pavement in layers, true to line and level. For each
compacting system, separate adjustment and control is provided. The pressure for pressure bars is infinitely variable.
Thanks to this feature, VGELE High Compaction Technology can be applied on jobs where layer thickness varies
across the pave width, for most varied paving materials and even for paving wearing course.

The pressure bar(s) driven by pulsed-flow hydraulics are the core of VGELE High Compaction Technology. Thanks to
this unique technology, VGELE pavers combined with HPC screeds in TP1, TP2 or TVP2 versions achieve highest
degrees of density.

The pressure bars P1 and P2 are located in the rear area

of VGELE HPC screeds. In this location, the highest
possible compacting intensity is achieved, as the mix
is prevented from yielding to the front. Nor can it yield
to the sides where it is confined by the screeds end
plates.
High compaction systems can be switched off, which
allows the screed to be used for standard compaction
at any time.

AB 500-2 Extending Screed in TP2 version with 2 pressure bars.

The pressure bars located at the rear of the screed achieve maximum compaction
as the mix is prevented from yielding.

The pulse generator transforms a constant hydraulic pressure into high-frequency

pressure pulses.

How pulsed-flow hydraulics work: due to the high impulse recurrence frequency, pressure bars
are in permanent contact with the mix. The pressure for pressure bars is infinitely variable.

18

The element at the beginning of the process of VGELE

High Compaction is the pulse generator as part of the
pulsed flow hydraulics. It generates high-frequency
pressure pulses. The pressure bars, in contrast to the
beating tamper bar, remain in permanent contact with
the mix, thus forcing the mix down for a prolonged
period of time.
Thanks to the high density achieved by the pressure
bars, fewer passes are required for subsequent
compaction by rolling.

Even when layer thickness varies across the pave width, VGELE High Compaction Technology achieves a high degree of uniform density.

19

VGELE Screed Technology

Screed Heating
Electric Screed Heating
Through decades, VGELE have gained a wealth of experience in electric screed heating, which has been installed in
all VGELE Fixed-Width and Extending Screeds since 1952. Electric heating provided for all compacting and smoothing
screed elements heats them up and maintains an ideal temperature while paving. In all VGELE tractor units, powerful and
sturdy three-phase A.C. generators are installed supplying electric power for screed heating. An intelligent Generator
Management brings highest efficiency.
In order to support compaction and produce a smooth surface texture, all compacting elements are heated across the
full screed width.
Screed plates are fitted as standard with heating elements distributing the heat all over the plates. Heating elements
are perfectly insulated to prevent loss of heat to the upper environment. As a result, the heat is directed 100% to where
it is needed, in fact to areas of contact with the hot mix. Tamper bar and pressure bars are fitted with heating rods for
quick and uniform heating from inside. Sophisticated technology is installed allowing automated control of screed heating.

Generator Management
An intelligent Generator Management system ensures that, irrespective of engine rpm, the generator output needed
for heating the screed in its current pave width is made available at all times. Heating the screeds compacting systems
to operating temperature takes a short time only even with the engine running at minimum rpm. When paving with
paver functions set to automatic, the Generator Management activates screed heating in Alternating Mode which cuts
electric power required for heating and reduces fuel consumption.

A three-phase A.C. generator, easily accessible, is installed to supply power for perfect heating of VGELE Extending Screeds and Fixed-Width Screeds across the full pave width.

The benefits of VGELE Generator Management at a glance:

Alternating Mode cuts electric power required for screed heating
and reduces fuel consumption.
Screed heating even at minimum engine rpm takes a short time only,
so that the paver is quickly ready for operation.
Uniform and constant screed heating adds to high pavement quality.

Infrared image of a screed plate. Constant and uniform heating all over the screed
plate is crucial for high pavement quality.

VGELE Screed Technology

Telescoping System for Extending Screeds

VGELE Single-Tube Telescoping System

The hydraulically extending units of VGELE screeds slide in and out smoothly on a single-tube telescoping system.
The three-section telescoping tube is amply dimensioned (150/170/190mm) and optimally stabilzed. Even with the
screed set to its maximum width, each tube section is extended by no more than half. Low-wear teflon tape inside the
telescoping tube provides for jerk-free sliding. For screed width control, two hydraulic rams are installed which can be
operated very precisely.

Telescoping Tube

3-Point Suspension
VGELE Extending Screeds place all kinds of layers with highest precision, also those varying in thickness across the
pave width when building crowned pavement profile, for instance.
Thanks to the 3-point suspension of the screeds extending units, torsional forces exerted to these units by pressure of
the mix cannot affect the screeds telescoping system. Forces are absorbed at the telescoping tubes outer point of
attachment to the extending unit, by a fixed guide tube and a sliding restraint system. Thanks to this design, the screeds
extending units move in and out smoothly, nothing can jam or get stuck.

The VGELE Single-Tube Telescoping System at a glance:

Hydraulic Ram

Amply dimensioned, sturdy telescoping tubes featuring high-precision operation.

They provide for excellent stability of the screed, a condition of prime paving results.
The VGELE single-tube telescoping system guarantees maximum stability even when the screed is set to its maximum width.

Telescoping tubes are located in high positions. Any contact with hot mix is positively avoided.
Even with the screed set to its maximum width, telescoping tubes are extended by no more
than half, which provides for zero flexing.

3-Point Suspension

Thanks to 3-point suspension of the screeds extending units, nothing can jam or get stuck.

Thanks to amply dimensioned telescoping tubes, the screeds extending units slide in

Pavement Profiles

VGELE Screed Technology

Bevel Side Plates

Crown / Transverse Profiles

Bevel Side Plates

VGELE screeds are capable of building a wide spectrum

of transverse profile shapes. Amount of crown and
height of the screeds extending units can be set up to a
variety of specifications across the full pave width,
with bolt-on extensions included.

VGELE screeds build excellent pavements right up to

the edges. Bevel side plates available for Fixed-Width
Screeds and the AB 500-2 and AB 600-2 Extending Screeds
provide for perfect and solid edges along the sides
of a roadway, vertical or sloped. VGELE offer bevel side
plates for various angles and layer thicknesses. In order
to achieve an optimal surface finish, bevel side plates
can be fitted with heating rods.

VGELE Extending Screeds come with hydraulically

extending units which are separately adjustable in height,
independent of the screeds basic unit. For this purpose
each extending unit is fitted with adjusting spindles on
either side. Spindles can be operated separately, which
allows the extending unit to be sloped above or below
horizontal. This way, the screed can be set up to any
transverse profile whatsoever imaginable in practice.
When combining the extending units sloping above or
below horizontal with a crown of the screeds basic unit,
VGELE Extending Screeds are capable of even handling
positive or negative gull wing profiles (M or W profiles).

Positive or Negative Crown

The use of bevel side plates is recommended above

all for HPC screeds. These screeds positively prevent the
mix from yielding to the front or to the sides under the
influence of the compacting forces. As a result, maximum
density is achieved right up to the pavement edges.

VGELE screeds with bevel side plates fitted produce a high uniform density
and perfect pavement edges in one go.

With the many different applications of extending screeds

in mind, VGELE provided bevel side plates with a
quick-fitting device. Fitting or changing these plates on

VGELE Manufacturing Technology

Where Quality Begins
The screed is the heart of each road paver. From the engineering point of view, it is the crucial
component deciding whether the paving job will be a success or not. VGELE are committed to the
manufacture of prime quality screeds standing out through high reliability and the latest in screed
technology.
VGELE sceed plates made of highly wear resistant material undergo a 3-step manufacturing
process. Accurate milling of the plates leading edges by special tools ensures that later on the mix
will be properly packed under the screed. In addition, it provides for smooth and accurate guidance
of the tamper bar, a feature that adds to long service lives of both screed plate and tamper.
First-class thermal treatment of tamper bar and pressure bars is crucial for high quality and longevity.
It is the process of hardening proper that decides upon these components wear properties. VGELE
relies on induction hardening. This method provides for enhanced hardening depth, uniform hardening
over the bars full length and highest evenness properties that reduce wear of tamper bar and pressure
bars and guarantee long service lives.

Screed plates straightened free from tension and with highest precision (error of no
more than 2 tenths of a millimetre allowed) feature longevity.

Induction hardening of tamper bar and pressure bars guarantees long service lives.

Tamper bar and pressure bars are hardened to a uniform depth of 5mm.

VGELE Manufacturing Technology

Where Quality Begins
Stability and high precision of the single-tube telescoping system installed in VGELE Extending
Screeds are of crucial importance for the paving results achieved later on in the field. It is above all
large screed widths that call for a high level of accuracy. Therefore, stability and zero slack are main
demands made on the telescoping systems in VGELE screeds. With honing machines we produce an
extremely smooth surface, allowing a roughness of no more than 5 thousandths of a millimetre.
This is 20 times less than the thickness of a human hair.
An important step in the manufacturing process is robotized welding of screed frames. With workpieces
in an optimal position, robot-produced welds are carried out with high precision, seam after seam.
As a result, screed frames manufactured this way feature consistent high quality and excellent sturdyness.
During all phases of their manufacture and during final assembly, our screeds undergo thorough
testing which guarantees that products made to highest standards of quality are supplied to clients
products made by VGELE.

Bolt-on Extensions
For all VGELE screeds bolt-on extensions are available. The VGELE system of bolt-on extensions
allows to easily and sturdily build up screeds to any pave width desired. Even when paving in large
widths, VGELE screeds work with highest precision and achieve superb degrees of uniform density
right up to the pavement edges.
