El trmino Bildung no es fcil de traducir y debe ser entendido en
el contexto de la cultura intelectual alemana. Las traducciones corrientes
de "cultura"o "educacin son insuficientes. Fritz Ringer intenta definirlo
como "la perspectiva del aprendizaje como la autorrealizacin personal a
travs de la interaccin interpretativa con textos venerados". "El modelo
esencialmente interpretativo de Bildung inspir a la tradicin hermenu
tica dominante en la investigacin filolgica e histrica alemana, como
tambin la concepcin germana de Geisteswissenschaften... El objetivo del
Bildung implicaba una perspectiva personal evaluativa (Weltanschauung),
ms que una intervencin manipulativa de la naturaleza o de los procesos

Hay por lo tanto una diferencia entre una teora que nie
ga la existencia de la realidad en los relatos histricos y una
historiografa que es completamente consciente de la com
plejidad del conocimiento en el campo de la historia, aunque
sin por ello dejar de asumir que gente real del pasado tuvo
pensamientos y sentimientos reales que condujeron a acciones
reales que, dentro de ciertos lmites, pueden ser conocidas y re
construidas. Quizs es cierto que, como lo ha expresado Patrick
Bahners, la ciencia desde Kant en adelante no ha posedo "cri
terios materiales de verdad".71 Pero Kant y el pensamiento cien
tfico y cientfico-social posterior, incluyendo a Max Weber, han
asumido que existe una lgica de la indagacin cientfica que
puede ser comunicada y que, aun cuando no ofrezca criterios
materiales, s ofrece estndares materiales para el examen del
mundo natural y humano. Sin embargo, incluso estos criterios
han sido cuestionados por algunos tericos contemporneos
de la ciencia.
Entre los tericos modernos y contemporneos de la ciencia
que han desafiado la nocin de que la investigacin cientfi
ca conduce a una comprensin progresiva de la realidad, es
necesario distinguir entre los escpticos ms radicales como
Gastn Bachelard72 y Paul Feyerabend,73 por una parte, y los
relativistas histricos como Thomas Kuhn, por otra. Bachelard
y Feyerabend entienden la ciencia como una actividad potica
para la que no hay una lgica o mtodo de indagacin consis
tente. En su La estructura de las revoluciones cientficas (1960),74
Kuhn argument que la ciencia no puede entenderse como el

CONSIDERACIONES FINALES
1. EL FIN DE LA HISTORIA"?
Se ha expresado repetidamente en aos recientes la opinin de
que vivimos en una era poshistrica y que la historia tal como
la conocemos ha llegado a su fin.1 Con esto, obviamente no se
quiere decir que el tiempo se ha detenido, sino que ya no existe
la posibilidad de una gran narrativa que otorgue coherencia
y significado a la historia. La idea que ha sido central en la fe
judeocristiana desde la antigedad bblica ha sido cuestionada,
es decir, la idea de que la historia tiene un propsito y una di
reccin que trasciende al mundo. La Ilustracin seculariz esta
fe y ubic el clmax de la historia en el proceso mismo de la
historia humana. Celebraba la civilizacin occidental moderna
como la cima y la consumacin que se aproximaba de un or
den social anhelado en el que la libertad humana y la cultura
estaran garantizadas. Ms recientemente, Francis Fukuyama
reiter esta creencia optimista.2
El siglo XIX marc el punto ms alto de la confianza en el
carcter benfico del desarrollo histrico, pero al mismo tiem
po marc el inicio de una profunda incertidumbre acerca de la

3. EL FIN DE LA ILUSTRACIN?
La duda radical en el siglo XX acerca de la posibilidad de un
estudio racional de la historia se encuentra, como ya hemos su
gerido, cercanamente relacionada con una creciente incomodi
dad respecto de la sociedad y la cultura modernas. Tal sociedad
ha sido considerada como heredera de la Ilustracin. Esta fue
entendida originalmente como el compromiso por liberar a los
seres humanos de los constreimientos arbitrarios mediante
la reflexin racional, para permitir que cada individuo pudie
ra desarrollar libremente sus potencialidades. En la discusin

segua entendiendo el concepto de clase como una unidad integradora e integrativa, lo que hoy nos parece obsoleto. Esto,
porque fracasa en considerar el carcter bastante ms complejo
de las sociedades. Los factores tnicos, religiosos, ideolgicos y
de gnero, entre otros, han adquirido una mayor importancia
para el anlisis de la poltica y de las sociedades. En ocasiones,
esto ha conducido a ciertas formas de historia cultural, al dar
menor importancia a la configuracin ms amplia de factores
econmicos y polticos.
Por otro lado, el concepto de lo que constituye no solamen
te la esfera poltica sino tambin la social, se ha expandido de
dos maneras. Una, que hemos mencionado recin, es la expan
sin de las esferas polticas y sociales para incluir diversos as
pectos de la cultura; la otra involucra una comprensin de la
esfera privada en trminos de relaciones de poder que afectan
a varios aspectos de la vida cotidiana. Michel Foucault ya haba
preparado el terreno para entender cmo operaban las relacio
nes de poder a nivel interpersonal. En tanto que el ejercicio
del poder haba sido entendido previamente en trminos de
poderosas instituciones centrales como el gobierno o la econo
ma, ahora se enfatiz ms la importancia de las formas extragubernamentales con las que el poder opera y penetra en todos
los aspectos de la vida. Una vez ms, el peligro reside en que
los contextos sociopolticos y econmicos de la cultura sean
dejados de lado.
Esto ltimo nos conduce a la historia feminista reciente, en
la que la concepcin ms amplia del poder juega un papel cen
tral. Una idea clave de la historia feminista es la subyugacin
de la mujer. La primera historia feminista haba sido acusada
de ser "demasiado blanca, demasiado clase media y demasiado
heterosexual".12 La historia feminista, ms y ms, fue cediendo

occidentales".23 Para l, esto tambin significaba que el multiculturalismo apoyado por los historiadores sociales y culturales
era un cncer que amenazaba con destruir a Occidente. Los mo
vimientos democrticos que sacudieron al mundo islmico no
pudieron ser explicados con el esquema de Huntington.
Los modelos de Fukuyama y de Huntington no han sido
tomados seriamente en cuenta por los historiadores, no sola
mente por las implicaciones polticas de sus obras sino porque
estos autores operan en un plano especulativo de historia glo
bal ajeno a los historiadores, quienes por lo general evitan tales
esquemas en su trabajo emprico. Sin embargo, lo ocurrido a
partir de 1990 muestra que ni el nfasis en la microhistoria ni
los patrones anteriores de historia regional y nacional, han sido
suficientes para abordar las transformaciones a escala global.
Resulta importante volver a examinar el carcter de la moder
nizacin. Con el giro cultural en el pensamiento histrico a
partir de la dcada de 1970, la nocin misma de modernizacin
ha perdido su popularidad. La modernizacin supona el reem
plazo progresivo de las perspectivas, las instituciones y las cos
tumbres "tradicionales" por parte de las "modernas". Las princi
pales fuerzas tras este fenmeno eran intelectuales, cientficas,
tecnolgicas y, lo que es ms importante, econmicas. Sus ra
ces se encontraban en la cultura occidental, pero su alcance
era universal. Supona la interconexin entre "el surgimiento
del capitalismo, la industrializacin, el auge de las estructuras
liberales democrticas, la construccin del Estado-nacin, el
surgimiento de la sociedad pluralista y las relaciones sociales
basadas en la realizacin, el progreso cientfico, ciertas estruc
turas de personalidad, ciertos sistemas de creencias y [varios]
estados anmicos".24 La idea de modernizacin fue rechazada

desde dos puntos de vista: el primero, por su carcter macrohistrico. Es decir, que impona una narrativa maestra de la his
toria, cuando la historia, argan sus crticos, no era un proceso
unidireccional o coherente. En cuanto al segundo, fue rechaza
do porque vea el desarrollo de la historia como algo normativo
y deseable, no slo para Occidente sino tambin para el mun
do en general. Tal idea pasaba por alto los aspectos negativos
del progreso y de la modernizacin, como lo demostraban las
grandes catstrofes del siglo XX: guerras mundiales, genocidio,
dictaduras fascistas y comunistas. Para varios de los crticos, la
modernizacin estaba ntimamente relacionada con el impe
rialismo occidental en sus formas coloniales y poscoloniales,
e involucraba la dominacin poltica, econmica y cultural de
los pases no occidentales. La crtica de la modernizacin y de
la modernidad occidental, con sus races supuestamente ancla
das en la Ilustracin, que plantearon algunos intelectuales de
la India, tambin adquiri caractersticas similares a las plan
teadas por los pensadores occidentales posmodernos.25
