Definition of Gifted and Talented (GEMS)

The term giftedness refers to a student who is in possession of untrained and spontaneouslyexpressed exceptional natural ability in one or more domain of human ability. These domains will
include intellectual, creative, social and physical abilities. In the case of a gifted student, whilst
exceptional potential will be present, they may actually under achieve.
The term talented refers to a student who has been able to transform their giftedness into
exceptional performance. Talented students will always demonstrate exceptional levels of competence
in the specific domains of human ability, including academic, technical, science and technology, arts,
social service, administration/sales, business operations, games, sports and athletics

You cant teach gifted but you can act as a catalyst.

So what is G and T?
Is it Nature or Nurture?
Genes or Environment?

and nurture
Genes and environment
Its nature

Children are born with a certain level of intelligence, however, this can be
nurtured to ensure they reach their full potential.

How to identify a HapGaT v a bright child

Bright children

Know the answer, Are interested, Have good ideas, Answer

questions, Are pleased with own learning, are good
memorisers. Enjoy straightforward, sequential presentation.

Gifted Children

Ask Questions, Are highly curious, Are critical of their own

learning, Are good guessers. Thrive on complexity.

Gifted isnt better - its different.

The Gifted and Talented Title v

High Performance Learning
Instead of you are GT you find
everything easy.
Groups will be fluid this year.
Children will be invited to
participate in competitions which
they will prepare at home and
have support to edit.

You made an unexpected connection!

You understood that very quickly.
You used some information that no one
else knew!
You noticed something that I didnt notice.
You explained that idea so clearly, a five
year old could understand it

G and T Provision at JPS

Some PoGifted /
Talented children will
attend withdrawal
sessions for English and
Maths throughout the
year. Our goal is for
every child to reach their
potential, groups are
fluid based on primarily
childrens needs, but also
timetable and staffing
constraints.

It is important to note that

children are with their class
teacher most of the week, so
our primary aim is that students
are challenged throughout the
week and are not concerned
about being chosen to be in a
special group.

Provision at JPS for GT/Enrichment

Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.
Key Stage 2.
Subject areas covered.
Support for students and class teachers.

Good Quality provision depends on:

1.The quality and complexity of the pupils
activity
2.The quality of the teachers questioning
3.The removal of unnecessary repetitive
practice
4. Depth and mastery, not acceleration

If you cant explain simply you cant do it Einstein.

This year JPS is focussing on Mastery rather than acceleration. This is in line with the
new Mathematic curriculum and will mean that children delve deeper into solving
problems, rather than accelerating through the curriculum with shallow learning.
Enrichment teachers will be taking more children in groups to support them to this
aim. English groups will support children, through activities and challenges related to
literacy. ( May be home learning with feedback).
In Year 6 the focus is on Speaking and Listening via debating and entry into writing
competitions.

Awe and Failure

Often Hap Gats hate to feel they have
Failed.
They need to know that the classroom is a
safe place to make mistakes.

Equally, when they discover something that

they have never experienced they will get
that aha moment and the awe which we
are really embracing at JPS

GT/ Enrichment and GEMS core values

GT programme is a great way to encourage
children to encourage independent
learning and empower students to
embrace responsibility.
Leading through innovation
Growing by Learning
Global citizenship
Pursuing Excellence
Particularly through out of class
experiences.

How we monitor progress

Questioning and discussions with children to check

understanding

Assessment sheets, which have been introduced this year.

Target tracker and more formal assessments.

We want children who have a rounded view of learning, not

who feel they have to reach the top of a specific level.
