Sexuality Education
Rationale:
The focus of this unit is to provide students with a range of information to enable them to make educated decisions when it
comes to being sexually active. Students at the level are experiencing a range of changes in their bodies and need to be
provided with accurate information regarding sensitive information. They further need to be provided with a range of
resources and services that they can access that provides them with more information about these sensitive topics. The
topics covered in this unit relate directly to sexual health and place emphasis on a range of topics from decision-making and
laws, through to reproductive systems, childbirth, contraception and sexually transmitted infections.
The first lesson in the unit acts as an icebreaker, engaging students through a playful activity of addressing the slang terms
used to describe various body parts. This activity is meant to remove all inappropriate terms and encourage students to use
correct terms when describing various body parts. Students also engage with prior knowledge during this lesson identifying
key changes that occur during adolescence and puberty. After this lesson the focus moves to discussing emotions and
decision-making. Students participate in a series of role-plays and case studies to examine responses to various situations
and provides responses to these situations. Group discussions follows promoting discussion about what is right and wrong in
certain situations.
Lessons 3 and 4 cover topics to do with love, sex and the law. These lessons focus heavily on students preconceptions and
misconceptions about sex and the law. Students are taught the concept that there is three types of sex, hand, mouth and
body and the differences between the three. Students participate in a group debates about whether you need to have love to
have sex and what is appropriate for people to engage in. The big concept that is addressed during these lessons is covering
aspects of the law that relate to students having sexual intercourse and sexting. These issues get covered through breaking
down misconceptions and addressing students thoughts and views on the matter. Guests are invited to join in the lesson from
the local police station to help educate students.
In lessons 5 through to 7 the focus turns to covering reproduction. Students examine the various body parts involved in
reproduction and what each part specifically does. They also look at female sanitary products and how the menstrual cycle
works. Following this, contraception is covered and who is responsible for providing contraception. The effectiveness of

contraceptive devices is covered as well as where students can gain access to them. This leads onto the last topic covered
which discusses a range sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Students research various STIs and present their findings to
the class.

Remember that all work should be presented in your own words and that any research should be referenced and
acknowledged.
You will have a number of lessons in which you can work on your fact sheets but you should also complete additional work at
home. Remember that the more information you collect and the more information you can include in your fact sheets the
more beneficial they will be to your class.
