Phoenix Racing is a student-run organization at Franklin W. Olin
College of Engineering, an innovative engineering school in Needham, Massachusetts. The team provides an opportunity for
students to pursue their passion for vehicles and engineering
through the Baja SAE competition. By raising funds for, designing,
building, testing, and eventually racing a small o-road vehicle, we
get hands-on experience dealing with the kinds of problems real
engineers face.
As we move into our sixth year, our team, composed of talented,
diverse young men and women from across the nation, is
currently focusing on rening our design, and developing
improvements for other subsystems, and building up the
surrounding community through service. We are looking forward
to the season and the challenges it will bring, and hope you can be
a part of it too.

Baja SAE
Team

Phoenix Racing is a devoted team of engineering students passionate about creating a

competitive SAE Baja vehicle. As a team, we contribute over a thousand man-hours to
the design, construction, and analysis of the vehicle. Unfortunately, it takes more than
time to build a rst class Baja car. To succeed, we need the materials and resources for
research, development, fabrication and competition. A year of competition costs over
$15,000, and as a team we require not only the supplies and tools to make our designs
into realities, but also transportation and shelter while at competitions.

Your supportin tools, equipment, or nancingwill reward the members of Phoenix

Racing with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to test their skills against students from
around the world. With your help, we will be able to provide our members with
hands-on experience that helps them grow into engineers.
Gifts to Phoenix Racing may be tax-deductible. Corporate and individual sponsors have
the opportunity to be recognized according to the levels indicated below.

MATT - DRIVETRAIN
Ive worked extensively on the
drive train, rst designing a
CVT based system for last
years car, and now working
on systems based on o-theshelf manual transmissions.
Theres a huge jump when you
rst really design a system
instead of just learning about
one for a class, you nd out all
the little details and how
quickly they can add up to
pose tremendous challenges.

ANGELA - SAFETY
I joined the team with no
prior experience. Since
then, I have learned to use
CAD for designing, as well as
various machines and tools
for fabricating. I've learned
how various components of
the car work, such as the
brakes, the transmission,
and the steering. Phoenix
Racing is a great opportunity for students, regardless
of engineering background.
This year I am striving to
make the car safer and
more ergonomical.

ALEX - CHASSIS
I have been working on various
systems with the team since
2004 and I have been chassis
designer since last year. Our
experience at competition has
led to a drastic redesign of the
chassis; I expect our tremendous
weight savings and increased
driver comfort will put us much
higher in the competition standings this year.

JOE - SUSPENSION
This coming year, I look forward
to getting my hands dirty with
the suspension on the baja car.
Since we are limited to a
prescribed engine, I believe that
we will dierentiate ourselves
based on the quality of our
suspension design and the time
and care we will take to perfect
it. Each member is condent
their focus area on the car is the
most pivotal. This is what
distinguishes us.

ANDREW - BRAKES
Though I have always loved cars,
I really got my rst experience
working on cars through SAE
Baja. I got to develop the braking
system, and use my welding
experience to fabricate the tube
steel chassis. This year, with our
gain in experience and expertise,
I expect our car to compete for
the top spot.
