System Purpose

S t a t i o n Wa r e

Modern numerical relays have a large number of settings that are determined, stored and
communicated by proprietary software solutions (these may even be suitable for only a particular manufacturer or even a series or type of relay). This results in a fragmented and
distributed settings database. DIgSILENT StationWare provides a single system that incorporates all such different device protocols, thereby providing one manageable software data
storage system, based on modern IT techniques, facilitating data interfacing and exchange
in a transparent and hassle free manner

Link to PowerFactory
PowerFactory's data exchange facility allows it to access the settings stored in StationWare,
such that these may be used as input for the powerful PowerFactory system simulation and
protection setting tools. Settings that are calculated by using these tools may then be transferred back to StationWare

DIgSILENT StationWare
satisfies the demand for a
reliable and scalable IT

environment

DIgSILENT StationWare is an extended and extendable system with regard to the type of
information stored in it. The device list managed by DIgSILENT StationWare has no limits;
and may be extended according to the number of devices to be managed.

Highly flexible in order to

fit your companies own

The settings management database stores the settings and data associated with protective
devices, such as relays, CT's, VT's and circuit breakers. In reality these devices are all assigned
to switch bays, which in turn are situated in a substation. Substations are located in different
areas, which belong to geographical regions. These various sub locations may be configured
in exactly the same manner as your network is arranged. In addition, relays themselves may
have several different settings groups, each consisting of sometimes hundreds of individual
setting parameters, that may similarly be exactly configured and noted.

Using a centralised data repository provided by StationWare the user may search settings
records using certain criteria, thereby quickly and easily accessing the required data from the
huge set of data that is stored for power electrical systems.

application.

The navigation window allows you to quickly move to any target data required, without

Historic data, which may be used to evaluate the network as it was at any particular point
in time, may be recalled for analysis. Such analysis, together with knowledge of system
experience, can lead to improved stability and availability, simultaneously and automatically
increasing expert knowledge.

Workflow Sequence
DIgSILENT StationWare supports the modelling of workflow sequences. Workflow sequences are generally defined by a state-graph consisting of states and state-transitions. Each
settings record contains the settings status as a common property.

S t a t i o n Wa r e

From the settings status-field the state of a specific relay settings record can be clearly
identified. Using different colours to indicate the current status of a settings record enhances this even more. For example, Settings in Service is shown in green, Settings calculation
progress in red, etc.

Management Features
The StationWare allows the settings status and its transitions to be linked to the user
management. Some user groups have the right to modify relay settings at most phases in
the workflow sequence, whilst other users may be only allowed to work at restricted levels.
Field technicians for example will typically only be authorized to forward the status from
Settings applied to Settings applied and tested or to Rejected should the settings
not have worked for whatever reason.
Every single one of such state changes is stored with a date and time-stamp as well as the
ID of the user who changed the status. The user may also add a description to a status
change to record important information pertaining to the state change, which later on is
displayed in Audit trail.

Role Based Security Inside

Users are managed by role based security; for each administrative function there is a corresponding right which expands the levels between normal user-rights and unlimited superuser-rights.
Location Administration
For example there may be a user manager to administer the users and their rights. Another
group who are the device managers create settings templates (called schemes), that other
user groups (settings engineers / technicians) may use for modelling substations.

The rights on locations as well as the

user-defined location types and their
hierarchy can be managed here.
Role based User and User Groups

Device Type Management

In this section the relay model types can
be administered. User defined relay
models can be uploaded as well.

Copy Template Management

Schemes which act as copy templates
containing multiple relays with typical
default settings can be defined here.

Custom Attributes
Here, additional properties can be defined for built-in objects like Locations,
Bays, Devices, Schemes, and Settings.

For example, an automated data interaction between a Power System Analysis tool and

thus included.

An example of this automation interface is the link to the PowerFactory power system analysis software system.

StationWare and other

software systems.

In this manner, settings applied in the past may be used for fault level calculations in order
to analyze reasons for maloperation. Optimised settings may then also be determined from
setting co-ordination studies.

Data Exchange with other Software Components

For the application of settings to relays, settings may be converted to various manufacturer
dependent formats, so that these settings may then be validated and applied to the protective devices in the field, in an automatic data transfer, without requiring any manual data
input.
The following converters are presently available:
Import Converters:
ABB multipurpose relay and WinECP software
ALSTOM Settings software
Eberle WinREG software
SEL (both AcSELerator and SEL-5010) file formats
Siemens DIGSI version 4.4 text based file formats
VAMP VAMPSET software file format
Export Converters:
Eberle WinREG software
SEL (both AcSELerator and SEL-5010) file formats
A prioritized target in the development of StationWare is the continued extension of this list
of converters. New converters, for other manufacturer specific file formats, can also be
developed according to your operational requirements.
Data exchange facility via IEC 61850 standards is under preparation.

Document Management System

A built-in document management system supports easy access to relay manuals, test reports
or additional documentation such as substation diagrams. With this, native settings files can
easily be managed.

Links
Modern relays may protect several circuits or communicate with other relays in the same
substation or at a remote substation. For easy navigation, DIgSILENT StationWare allows
links to be defined to or between any device stored within the system. These links are visualized in a tabulated link list.

A Flexible Reporting Platform

DIgSILENT StationWare includes a reporting section that is extendable according to your
requirements. Additional text fields and resources, such as your company logo, may be defined, so as to provide corporate identity, for example.
The output format can be HTML (hypertext markup language files), PDF (portable document
format), XML (extensible markup language) or simple text files.

Data Mining Possibilities

A status field may also be used in database queries to provide, for instance, performance
indicators, such as, 'how many emergency settings are applied in a specific region'. Audit
trail reports are available to trace workflow sequences. Additional status options can be
added where required. If, for instance, the settings need to be reviewed before being applied to the relay, an additional "setting calculation complete and reviewed" state may be
inserted.
