Motivation
Ability:
Personality
We all have interests in life for some, it is mountaineering, for
others, it may be painting and these can be the kind of pursuits
that give us the most pleasure and satisfaction, often providing
motivation over the course of a lifetime. Moreover, some people are
able to develop their interest into a meaningful way of earning a
living and achieving a rewarding career it motivates them.
In career terms, your personality refers to your personal traits,
attitudes and preferences; how you choose to behave, the
environments that you prefer, the people that you instinctively like
to work with, and the way in which you like to be treated.
Most jobs involve working with other people to some extent but the
amount and type of contact you have with them may vary
considerably. Some jobs will involve continued contact with the
same work colleagues whereas other jobs will involve meeting new
people, for example the public, customers and clients. The nature of
the interaction will also vary according to the job function and
whether, for example, you are selling, treating, teaching, advising,
protecting or entertaining.
Career choices may be affected by many factors e.g. culture,
economic circumstances, labour market conditions, class, gender,
education level, abilities and skills, personality traits
Some of these are beyond peoples control but many are not, giving
people choice and discretion
What Is Success?
(Success is about closing the gap between what we want and what we
have)
In fact society seems to base the whole concept of being successful
primarily by how much money a person earns. But societys definition has
more to do with flash than it does with substance. Many so-called
successful people are very unhappy in their personal life.
People measure success in many different ways and on many different
levels.
When setting goals in life, its important that we identify what success
means to us personally.
For example, most people measure success in business according to
their income; however this may not be an accurate assessment. If your
business efforts provide a substantial monetary reward but you dont
enjoy what you do, can this really be called success?
The monetary definition of success is secondary because it is more of
something that if partially in your control, but mostly in the control of
forces that we have no influence over.
External and Internal Success
Success as a Process
Success is a journey, not a destination
Success is the result of numerous small steps taken into the right
direction
In the book Good Boss, Bad Boss, author Robert Sutton ran a
survey among workers that judged how "energizing" each
employee was. They found staggering results that workers
who energized others had a
high correlation between getting promotions and other
success factors in the workplace.
It's not so hard to see why Energizers are so valuable to a company.
In a setting where bad attitudes often prevail, an Energizer can lead
by example and create positive energy just by doing "what they do."
In fact, their job descriptions or title don't often matter within the
company. What matters is how they make others fee
