Live nativity depicts the

meaning of

Christmas
By LIZ VOS
Staff Writer

The three kings, portrayed by Gabriel Mead (from left), Nathan Vouk and John Paul Mead stayed close to keep
warm as they presented their gifts to Baby Jesus during the Dec. 4 live nativity in front of Holdingford City Hall.
Also pictured is Andrew Mead who portrayed Joseph during the event.
PHOTOS BY MIKE KOSIK

As the community of Holdingford

came together to celebrate the holiday
season on the night of Dec. 4 with
Christmas in Holdingford, a group of 35
volunteers teamed up with 12 animals
to create a special living scene of the
very first Christmas.
The live nativity was a first for the
annual Holdingford gathering, which
also included sleigh rides, caroling,
the lighting of the Citys Christmas
tree, visits from Santa and Frosty the
Snowman and much more.
It was really special, said nativity
organizer Virginia Tretter. It really
brought on a special appreciation for
what Christmas is really about.
Making the live scene even more
special was the fact that those involved
in the scene were children.
None of them had ever seen a live
nativity before, Tretter said. They
were so excited to be a part of it.
The idea of the live nativity
transpired from the planning of the
Holdingford Hometown Happenings
committee, which had been working to
make the communitys annual holiday
gathering even more special.

Christmas Greeting Edition Friday, December 18, 2015 Page 7

(Nativity continued from page 6)

Mary Ann Mead, Jessica Vouk, Katelyn Vouk and Therese Mead served as
angels during the live nativity.

Portraying Joseph and Mary were Andrew Mead and Cassie Sowada.

They added new things like the

carolers and the sleigh rides and the
stores all stayed open until 8 p.m.,
Tretter explained. There were people
in the stores dressed like elves and it
was just so much fun. Somewhere along
the planning, a nativity was suggested.
With a largely Catholic population
in Holdingford, the idea of a nativity was
embraced, although organizers decided
that perhaps the typical nativity scene
would not quite be special enough for
the one-night event. A live nativity was
suggested and Tretter was approached
to take over the leadership role in the
project.

who had straw bales and animals to

lend. That was great I had most of the
scene, but no kids to play the roles,
Tretter laughed.
But Tretters involvement with
Faith Formation along with also being a
substitute teacher with the Holdingford
School District helped her reach the
perfect audience and by the time Dec.
4 came, she says she had everything she
needed.

After moving to Holdingford eight

years ago, Tretter says she became
involved in the church along with many
other area groups and activities.
When they asked, I said yes, she
said of her decision to lead the nativity,
which was set up in front of Holdingford
City Hall.
One big challenge stood in the way
of a successful presentation, and that
was time. Tretter had three weeks to pull
together a cast and set for the outdoor
scene. But looking back, she says
everything just came together perfectly.
I put a message out in the church
bulletin. First I got a call from someone

Merry Christmas
& Happy New Year!

Dear Santa,
My name is John Sundet. I think the meaning of
Christmas is Pow! oh, sorry, its just one of my
brothers very loud pop rocks. So the meaning of
Christmas to me is to decorate the whole house.
I think it is the most important thing for me to
do with my family . I think the best thing to decorate is my two family Christmas trees, and we
have two Christmas trees because we have too
many neat decorations. I bet a bunch more families have different family traditions or a different
heritage than our family.
John, 6th grade
Dear Santa,
My name is Myra Kotschevar. What Christmas
means to me is many things like getting gifts to
delicious food, but what is the most important
thing to me is family traditions. They are handed
down for many years. One of mine is making
lefse which is a potato bread with flour, butter
and cinnaman and sugar on top and rolled like
a taco. One other tradition of mine is sledding
down a gigantic hill with my family. One the I
was going down the hill when I hit a bump and
went airborne and hit the ground so hard I could
barely walk. That is what christmas means to
me!!

pretzel than an M&M in the middle, we also design cookies. We all get together and bake cut
out cookies then we put frosting in bags and
cut a tiny hole one end and decorate the cookie.
Thats just one of the things I do around Christmas and some of the stuff we bake.

family and I get ready to go to church in Albany,
Minnesota. During Chirstmas Eve church service.
At the end of the Church service, each and ever

Dear Santa,
My name is Alexa Davey. Every year, my family and I really get into the Christmas spirit by
decorating the inside of our home. The very first
thing we do every year is go to Cornerstone
Pine Tree Farm to buy a Christmas tree. While
were there we also go on a sleigh ride and have
hot chocolate or hot apple cider to warm us up.
My favorite thing to do is put up and decorate
the tree. Once we do the lights, we put up the
ornaments, which include things I made when
I was little. There are many other decorations
we put up like snowmen, mini chirstmas trees,
and christmas themed frames. In my opinion,
the coolest one is our model village we put up
in our basement. In this village there are many
different little building like a school, a ski hill,
and a cafe. We set up people walking around
and buildings with lights flashing to make our
village full of life. Decorating is one thing my
family enjoys most and its one of the most fun
times of the holidays.
Alexa, 6th grade

Dear Santa,

giving things up for there loved ones. Last of all,
we communicate and play outside. We talk for
hourse and play games. When were outside, we
have snowball fights and play in the snow. When
its all over, we give our hugs and leave. And were
all glad we got to spend time toegher and make
memories.

Dear Santa,
My name is Hailey Oswaskey. Every Christmas I
get together with my family at my house. There
are a lot of fun things we do together. When my
family arrived, their cars were full of a bunch of
presents. Once my family got in the house, my
beautiful Chirstmas tree filled up with presents. I
couldnt wait to open them, but my parents told
me I had to wait until dinner was done. Then I
was my cousins pull up in my driveway. Once
they got in the house, we sprinted back outside
to play in the fresh snow. We made snowmen
and had a snowball fight. Once we started to
get cold, we ran inside. Right when we got inside my mom said supper was done. My whole
family ate fast so all of us could open presents.
Once dinner was all cleaned up we all headed
downstairs to pen presents. I got a lot of nice

was stuff in we put it together for about 45 minutes. Then we put the blinking Christmas lights up
on the tree. Then we put up snow white sparkling
tinsel almost making smiles on the tree and the
ornaments are personally the hardest for me because we all were fighting were the ornaments
should go on the Christma tree, how many, what
color so one and so one. Until our mother makes
us stop fighting. Then we watch the tree blink to
life before our eyes and light up our day.

Hope, 6th grade
Dear Santa,
My name is Kaya Maile-Galvan. On the 1st of
December, my family and I decorate the house.
The fake snowmen and gingerbread men are up.
The plastic candy canes remind me of eating real
candy canes. Every time I lookk at the red and
green lights it reminds me of Christmas. We also
put up a real tree on the 14th of december. My
grandpa and I put the lights on the green first.
Then, my grandma, sister and I put bulbs onthe
tree. After that my gradmpa puts the angel on
the top. My grandma also puts the stockings
up. My mom puts a fake tree up in my room every year. and I help decorate it. As much as my
family like to decorate inside, we also decorote
outside. my grandma and I put fake snowmen
outside and then my grandpa hangs up the colorful lights outside as well. we put wooden sleds
outside by the snowmen. After we are done, we
lookk at the decorations.
Kaya, 6th grade
