GRID was invited to this competition which seeked concepts
for the regeneration of a large site within the Central Business
District of Beijing. An underground shopping centre, office,
housing and hotel were part of the brief.
As an architectural assistant for this competition I helped on
the development of the initial concept and helped preparing the
graphic information and presentation for the entry.

In 2008 GRID won an invited competition which included

MAKE, Eric Parry and Squire & Partners. The existing office
buildings was replaced by a new residential led mixed use city
block containing 200 dwellings, retail, a restaurant, leisure and
a business centre.

In JWA I had the opportunity to be involved in the fisability

studies, preparation of planning submissions and detailed
drawings, tender pack, and construction drawings, details
design and access statement, creating presentations and
attending meetings, producing bu ilding surveys, site visits,
snagging list and liasing with clients and contractors

After having been granted planning permission, the main

challenge for us on this project implies producing a detail design
which maintains the original proposal quality while maintaining
its cost limit on site.

Caravanserai is a good example of emerging tactical urbanism .

It arose from a partnership between Newham Council, the
Mayor of London and Property Week magazine, which in 2011
launched a competition called "Meanwhile London" offering
three strategic locations in the district of Newham to be used
by the winners through a free contract and temporary lease for
five years.
Ash Sakula, in collaboration with Exyst, Space Makers Agency
and Wayward Plants won the competition for this site located
opposite the station Canning Town. It was called Caravanserai,
a name inspired by the med ieval shelters for the caravans and
merchants who plied the Silk Road through Asia, Europe and
Africa.
These centers were designed to give rest and food for travelers
and animals , but quickly become a place of exchange of ideas,
culture and knowledge, leisure and commerce. Based on these
ideals, CTCaravanserai was born as a self-constructed project
using recycled materials and with the crucial help of community
member, professionals and student.
On this project I had the opportun ity to collaborate as a
volunteer helping in the social engagement with the community,
activities management and publishing and also on design and
build of different self-bu ilt projects within the site.

The site is on the Northern tip of the island at the convergence

of the East and West Rivers. It is strategically situated with
respect to the future urban plann ing proposal of the adjacent
Admistrative District. A highly qualified position due to the
geographical location : the "island" is the "heart" of Sanya and
the site is at its Northern tip offering magnificent views.
The masterplan was produce to develop the riverfront, an
deprived area wh ith a lot of potencial. The proposal was to
create a hotel with fu ll services, including a Business Center
in which the River & Harbor Development offices are located.
A private membership Spa Club that is also open to hotel
guests and other selected persons, as a quality element of
attraction for the Ronggen complex and an exclusive residential
condom inium with 200 types of units.

Located on a busy traffic junction, this development comprises

220 affordable houses, community center, library, retail and
offices buildings in Amate , Seville.

The modern mixed-use development is split into four six-storey

blocks divided by landscaped pedestrian ways. To promote
openness and social interactivity amongst residents the project
inverted the buildings to face the inner courtyard. The 220unit social housing apartments vary in style and tenure mix to
maximize flexibil ity and diversity.

Providing a range of unit sizes and types along a common

scheme, the proposed massing and staggered facade tries to
foster the integration and a sense of community into the project,
also generating different streetscape frontages in relation to the
different aspects in the context.

The existing building, formerly a sugar cane factory, is the

site considered to be converted into a institutional mixed use development that wou ld works as the catalyst of the
regenaration of the area next to the River Genii.
This community center building is a three-story structure
comprising flexible workshops for small local industries at
ground-floor level and a community hall on the first floor. The
brief also includes library, multipurpose room, community
administrative facilities, student accomodation and creche.
In addition to these, the treatment of the public space
surrounding the old factory will integrate it with the river
waterfront and the adjoining residential areas , becoming a main
part of the urban project.

The concept comes from understanding a market as a place of

exchange, sale, exh ibition, meeting, crossing, access, learning,
culture and democracy.
The proposal aims to upgrade the existing market faci lities
and incorporate to them the informal street market stalls into
a mixed use development that would add new public services
taking over a main rol within the regeneration of the area.
Thereby, the Community Center responds to the demands of
a population needing a proper space for social development,
both for learning and meeting comprising a vocational school,
dance & music center and an open auditorium for concerts
and shows.
