The widow had to work hard to bring up her little son alone
by applying for multiple jobs in the whole day. She had been
burning the candle at both ends for 5 years to earn money. She
always insisted on hardworking and being a responsible
mother to take care of her little son, Jack instead of frustrating
for the sad episode about her husband, John. The widow, Iris
was my neighbour. Iris lost her husband, John in the tragic
flood that happened unexpectedly without any forecasting.
John was a SMART Team member who was equipped with
courage and professional rescue skills after implementing a ton
of training. The windows husband, John was sacrificed in the
calamity for rescuing his wife's life. The unexpected encounter
made us transported back the unforgettable experience 5
years ago.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET) had
pitched the rainfall at Orange two hours ago. Numerous of
Malaysian states were traumatized by torrential rains that
caused by La Nina phenomenon about a week. All citizens had
been warned to stay indoors and not venture outdoors for
Orange meant Be Prepared. Schools had been closed until
further notice due to the level could go to Red and Red would
be when all hell would break loose.
Owing to the tv satellite signal was disrupted by the bad
weather, the tv screen in a total blackout. Iris's husband, John
was ordered to do the mission to save the flood victims. Iris
came to our home with her little son to browse The Star Online
to gain the latest updated information about the weather
through internet. Iris was worrying about her husband. The
circumstances still retained the same and predicted being
more critical. The week of the torrential rainfall sad an anxious
time for all of us. Outside was raining cats and dogs, the drains
filling up, we were too tired to think of anything but hit the
sack.
Doppdoppdoppp The sound of raindrop as a bullet
shot into my ears. I roused up from sleeping. I got out of bed
and stepped on the water. My bedroom was flooded. To my
flummox, I ran higgledy-piggledy to wake up my parents at the

drop of a hat. I also not forgot to give a wake-up call to my

neighbour, Iris's family. Frantically we worked to put our
precious belongings onto a higher safer place. However, we
were not exactly enough time to do anything effective. Within
ten minutes, the water was already reached our waist swiftly.
Soon it became obvious that we had to leave from staying
inside the house and evacuate to higher place.
Chop-chop! We are toast! We must get out of here! dad
yelled. Dad grabbed my arm and mum with trembling hands
then moved to the rooftop. My neighbours, Iris and her little
son were already on the roof with their belongings. The
howling winds made us shivered with cold. There was nothing
much we could do except to utter a prayer, hoping no one was
sacrificed in this tragic flood. Then Jack heard a distant rumble
of thunder and cried loudly. Iris consoled her little son to calm
down. Flashes of lightning brightened up the sky in streaks.
The roar became louder and louder.
Whoo! Whoo! The awful sound added to the eeriness of
the night. Jack and I was apprehensive about sleeping. Out of
the blue, I could saw the only two shinning eyes were
approaching Jack, it was spooky. The creature resembled an
alligator swam toward Jack. It swam surrounded the rooftop
continuously. I shouted out loud and waved my hand to notice
Jack. My goose bumps had risen on my arms and neck, even as
a chill ran down my spine. Within seconds, the alligator
crawled onto the roof border and tried to attack Jack with its
mouth wide opened. The scratches were distinctly seen. Iris
was shocked and she reached out a steel rod to protect her
little son, Jack. Unfortunately, the rod was inadvertently
dropped into the flowing water.
Oh My God! Jack! Jack! Stay behind mum! Cried Iris in
despair. Jacks body was stiff and mesmerized with the scene.
Iris, dont give up! Be strong! Mum yelled to the woman,
Iris and asked dad to figure out some ways to save them.
The alligator bit Iris's leg and dragged him into the water. Iris
was intensely painful. Iris was not fear to die but fear of leaving
her little son, Jack alone in this world. Once Iris was struggling
stubbornly in the water, the smart team was arrived soon. Iriss
husband was also a one of them. Iriss husband, John was
desperately jumping into the water to save his wife, Iris. John

successfully rescued his wife, Iris and swam toward the roof. At
the moment we cheered, the alligator appeared again. It
dragged John into the water and disappeared. Happiness
always faded away quickly. We were sad to see the scene,
even Iris did.
Iris and her little son, Jack witnessed all the incident
happened. The tears rolled down unwillingly from her cheek.
Her little son, Jack was innocence and just staring at his dad's
dead body as he feared of the incident. I was thunderstruck
and feeling sadness over John's death. John's bravery sacrificed
his life to save his wife, Iris from being attacked by the
alligator. Since that day, the woman, Iris becomes a widow.
The windows husband is a big hero. Now, the widow, Iris
accepted her fate. Accept the things to which fate binds you,
and love the people with whom fate brings you together, But
do so with all youre heart, the widow said. The quote was
written by Marcus Aurelius. Iris promised to her husband, she
will take care of her little son and protected him.
