FOUNDATIONS of MIL
The Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Teacher Training Program is based on MIL Curriculum Guide of the K-12 Program for
Senior High School of the Department of Education. In addition, the MIL Training for Teachers of the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for
Teachers and Students provided additional framework for this training.
It introduces the teachers to basic understanding of media and information as channels of communication and tools for the
development of individuals and societies. It also aims to develop teachers to be creative and critical thinkers as well as responsible
users and competent producers of media and information. Moreover, it provides a platform for teachers to combine their skills,
knowledge and technology with that of pedagogy towards a more blended learning environment.
Specifically, it aims to provide:
comprehensive understanding of the foundations of media and information literacy;
critical analysis of the different types of media and information;
competent synthesis of knowledge with skills in the analysis, design, development, utilization and evaluation of media and
information;
comprehensive knowledge and skills in developing lesson activities that utilize technology integration strategies; and

competent synthesis of knowledge with skills for the identification, utilization, production and evaluation of appropriate instructional
media and information resources for each stage of the lesson plan.
The participants should be competent in using online / web / internet / computer technologies and could come from any area of
specialization.

Reflections
As a teacher, we should be MI literate because our
students are MI learners. Thus, it will be easier to teach
them if we are knowledgeable of MIL and can connect
with them easily.
Every teacher should be equipped with MIL skills
because we are handling students who are tech savvy,
"digital citizens" and not only that, it is important to

of how technology can help us in being a useful citizen.
As a teacher I think this will definitely help our students
considering that they are already digital citizens, MIL
can be used from motivation up to application in our
profession. Another use of it is its application to or

media and information.
Nowadays, we noticed that the new generation of
young people are difficult to understand with the kind
of behavior they portray. This may be attributed to the
kind of media and information they are dealing with. So
as teachers, we can guide them properly if we know
their world. We should be with them as they engage
themselves with these fast pacing mode of media and
information and teach them how to use it properly,
evaluate and be responsible in dealing with it.
Our country is pushing with MIL as part of the K-12
program. I believe that with ASEAN 2015, we can cope
with our fellow Asian counterparts.

pupils will be productive citizens using MIL ,and of

In the Philippines as what Sir Pitagan mentioned that
we are in the planning stage, MIL is being planned to be
implemented as of 2016 to senior HS students, and I
think this is a nice try from Dep Ed to include this in the
curriculum, but I was wondering if MIL will be

computer concepts and skills to the public schools
which is the majority of the schools in the Philippines. In
connection to my previous statement my reflection on
this topic is that I feel very hopeful about the plans of
including MIL to the Philippine curriculum, but there will
be certain adjustments/considerations that can should
start with Basic Ed.

Reflections
There is a need to understand people media and

People media is considered as the most important

information because people are considered as the most

important media. Without people, there will be no
information available in any kind of media.
People and media should be considered as equally
important because people create media and whatever
information we have depends on the kind of expertise
a person have. On the other hand, the information we
get from media must be filtered and checked for its
credibility, usability and be responsible in
disseminating any information.
As teachers, we are one of the important types of
media and we can use it responsibly to teach correct
information among our students.

media, therefore it is very important to learn and

understand it. People media considered as facilitator of
all media considering its advantages and disadvantages
is the most powerful of all media. ;)
Wholistic in approach people media for me should have
a well rounded evaluation. In disseminating information
people media should have a personal touch and could
target diverse audience. In the field of education,
teachers best represent people media, teachers should
have a wholistic personality that could best fit, diverse
learners.
I definitely agree, as I mentioned above, that people
media is the most important media. People media who
manipulates other media is the mot powerful facilitator
to combine all media and make a useful dissemination
of information

Reflections

Text media such as those in the newspaper, textbooks

are very important sources of knowledge/information
readily available especially those on-line sources.
Criteria for integration into lesson presentation:
a.) appropriateness to the lesson; b.)can enrich the
lesson; c) can enhance the understanding of the
students; d) can arouse the interests of the students;
e) as a teaching aid/tool

Text Media is very important since this is one of the

basic media and I think the oldest also. It caters visual
learners. Text medias in form of print, wikis and other
form are very helpful.
For me the most important criteria to consider text as an
integration a) Objective of the text b) Structure how it
was written/created c) Appropriateness/ Accuracy of the
text media d) Design that is also adoptable to the
learners ability e) Usability of the text media to the
students.

Text media can be used in all subject areas.

For me it can be best used in Language Arts, Reading,
Math, Filipino and also History.

sound

May refer to audio formats

may refer to analog tape cassettes and digital cd's, computer files containing audio, in any number of digital
formats

General Objective
The learner understands the similarities and differences of the different types of audio media and information and
gain comprehensive knowledge how to analyze, design, develop, implement (utilize) and evaluate them.

Specific Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner...

describes the different dimensions of audio media and information;

evaluates the reliability and validity of audio media and information and its sources;

utilizes design principle and elements for audio media and information; and

familiarizes on audio media and information and gain comprehensive knowledge on how to effectively
evaluate them.

Reflections
Audio media is important because we can use it in our
teaching especially those lessons that can be well
understood by the students with the use of audio. We
can make our lessons more interesting by using other
medium such as audio.
In choosing audio based media, we need to consider
the availability of the audio materials, clarity of the
sounds produced, appropriateness to the lesson, and
etc.
Learning out loud is similar learning with sounds. Some

Audio Media is very important because it caters our

students who are audio learners. It is one of the basic
types of media but is very effective.
In selecting audio based media we should consider:
audience the audience first, to classify what they need
to know, the medium that will be used for the audio
media and the preparation of the media.
For me, it is best used for Language Arts, Reading, Story
Telling in English and Filipino, and History.

learners can learn with music or background music

while studying. Also, Learning out loud means that
learning is more effective when aided with sounds
because the more senses involved in learning, the
better. Thus, if the teachers can use the visual and
auditory at the same time, then more learning is
developed among students.

Learning Out Loud focuses more on the auditory

learners, where in pupils tend to learn more if they were
able to hear the content and they were able to hear the
concepts that they need to know.
Personally, I am an auditory learner, I find it more easy
to learn, the retention of the learning is more deep if I
am listening.

VISUAL MEDIA AND INFORMATION

Visual Media

sources of data or information in the form of visual representation

may be abstractions, analogues, rough illustrations or digital reproductions of objects

require the interpretation of the data

sources may be hosted on the internet, printed in publications, displayed through broadcast media, or otherwise disseminated

generally available or citable as stable or traceable future references

General Objective
The learner understands the similarities and differences of the different types of visual media and information and gain
comprehensive knowledge how to analyze, design, develop, implement (utilize) and evaluate them.
Specific Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner...

describes the different dimensions of visual media and information;

evaluates the reliability and validity of visual media and information and its sources;

utilizes design principle and elements for visual media and information; and

familiarizes on visual media and information and gain comprehensive knowledge on how to effectively evaluate them.

Reflections
There is a need to understand visual media and
information because basically we are all visual learners.
Therefore in order for us to learn better, visual media
should be used effectively. We as teachers should also
teach our students how to use visual media responsibly
not only for entertainment but to use it productively.
Also, attention span is very affected by visuals, thus, we
as teachers should adjust our teaching methods to cope
with the kind of learners we have today.
Visual media can be used in any subject matter
especially presenting texts through visuals such as data
presented through graphs, tables and illustrations like
pie chart and project these through power point
presentations.

Visual media and information is also very important

because it caters visual learners, and visuals are very
important since it is known as one of the most used in
the senses. Most studies show that visual media is the
most effective since it is available and can be easily
perceived. Best example of using visual media are
toddlers who can easily use tablets nowadays.
Visual media can be best used in presenting tables and
graphs, projections and interactive power points.
It can be used almost in any subject but it is preferably
advisable in Math in showing tables and graphs, in
Science for showing different life cycle processes etc.
Visual media can also be used in Language Arts,
Reading and Computer Subjects.

Visual message design is a visual media designed to

convey message or information effectively by
considering criteria in doing visual media.

Visual Design is a type of media with a well planned

objectives to target visual learners to provide
information.

MOTION MEDIA AND INFORMATION

a form of media that has the appearance of moving text and graphics on a display

its purpose is to communicate information in multiple ways (Roblyer, 2006)

an integrated sight-and-sound kinetic media (Shelton, 2004)

General Objective
The learner understands the similarities and differences of the different types of motion media and information and gain
comprehensive knowledge how to analyze, design, develop, implement (utilize) and evaluate them.
Specific Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner...

describes the different dimensions of motion media and information;

evaluates the reliability and validity of motion media and information and its sources;

utilizes design principle and elements for motion media and information; and

familiarizes on motion media and information and gain comprehensive knowledge on how to effectively evaluate them.

Motion media and information is important because this
is the type of media that our students are involved very
much. Our students can easily grasp the lesson by
using motion media since this form of media taps not
only visual or audio but texts are also included in this
form of media.
In considering the choice of motion media,
appropriateness to the lesson must be considered aside
from using it to enhance learning.
In chemistry for instance, dangerous chemical reactions
can be viewed/observed by using multimedia or video.
Also, many chemical reactions are easily understood by
using animations.
Motion media is also very appropriate to use to teach
topics such in nanotechnology and also in nuclear
chemistry. Aside from the concepts can be understood
well with the aid of motion media, it also creates a very
much available teaching tools for chemistry teachers.
MANIPULATIVE MEDIA AND INFORMATION
Manipulatives Media

Motion media is important because the movement of

the combination of texts and graphics communicate
information in multiple ways. It is multisensory in such
a way that it stimulates the audience sight and hearing.
The emotion media should produce a better
engagement of pupils in the topic presented, it should
promote deeper level of understanding to the pupils, it
should improve students cognitive capacities of
learning from the video
Motion media can be used in History subjects,
Language Arts, Reading (Story Telling).
I want to share my thoughts about motion media
minimizing the role of the teacher. Motion media can be
best used in distant learning. Motion media should not
be used alone in classroom set up, teachers would still
need to analyze, synthesize and evaluate the videos
that will be presented tot he class.

items or tools used to aid in hands-on learning

models in which learners can manipulate to gain understanding and/or mastery of a concept

tools to assist students to advance from concrete novice knowledge to a more expert understanding of abstract ideas through
visual and kinesthetic senses

General Objective
The learner understands the similarities and differences of the different types of manipulatives media and information and gain
comprehensive knowledge how to analyze, design, develop, implement (utilize) and evaluate them.
Specific Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner...

describes the different dimensions of manipulatives media and information;

evaluates the reliability and validity of manipulatives media and information and its sources;

Reflections
Manipulatives media can be both traditional and digital.

Manipulative media is very important tool in learning

The use of manipulatives media in the classroom is

essential since it gives a concrete experience for the
learners because students able to explore and
investigate. Thus, learning is effective, be it traditional
or digital.
Some considerations in choosing manipulatives should
be in line with the objectives of the lesson. If it requires
manual manipulation or using a software, then use it in
teaching a lesson.
A concrete example of this use in chemistry is using
"balls and sticks" to make models of molecules. In this
case, the understanding of the lesson is better since the
students ca see the 3D of the molecules including
bonding between the atoms.

since it involves kids in learning, this stimulates a lot of

senses and this produces better learning retention.

Manipulative- based media should consider: the use,

the appropriateness of the manipulative in the learning
of the pupils, what medium should be considered, is
digital or a manual manipulative and the way how to
get feedback from evaluating the used manipulative
media.
It can be best used almost in all subject areas but for
me it can be best used in Math, Science, History and
Computer Education.
Manipulative media is best for tactile learners,
wherein students are able learn by their sense of touch
or by manipulating objects.

MULTIMEDIA AND INFORMATION

Multi Media

media and content that uses a combination of different formats

a wise mix of various mass media such as print, audio and video

the development of computer-based hardware and software packages produced on a mass scale and yet allow individualized
use and learning

simply means "more than one medium"

is the exciting combination of computer hardware and software that allows you to integrate video, animation, audio, graphics
and texts resources to develop effective presentations on an affordable desk top computer (Fenric, 1997)

is characterized by the presence of texts, pictures, sounds, animation and video; some or all of which are organized into
coherent program (Phillips, 1997)

General Objective
The learner understands the similarities and differences of the different types of multi media and information and gain comprehensive
knowledge how to analyze, design, develop, implement (utilize) and evaluate them.
Specific Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner...

describes the different dimensions of multi media and information;

evaluates the reliability and validity of multi media and information and its sources;

utilizes design principle and elements for multi media and information; and

familiarizes on multi media and information and gain comprehensive knowledge on how to effectively evaluate them.

Reflections
Multi media is the use of two or more forms of media. Nowadays, this is the most available form of media and is a
very good tool in teaching most of the topics. For instance, using only textbook used only one form of media, that is
visual. However, in using an alternative form of media such as using video may be better since it utilizes multiple
forms of media and it appeals many senses, thus more effective.

Having said that, using multi media and information has pros and cons especially to the youth today. One of the
disadvantages is the short attention span of students. Many of them cannot focus on lecture because they get
bored when they only listen to long lectures. Some effects also of multi media is on the values of the students.
Some of the youth today are very much affected with what they see in the media.
Multimedia is useful in all subject areas. The teacher should consider these in enhancing learning but be careful not
to use this to avoid face to face interaction with the students. Blended learning should be used carefully and be
conscious how to use this technique.
