Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to provide the methodology for deciding usability of
materials wherever TCs are not retrievable.

2.

Scope
This procedure covers only those welding consumables available in CMC whose TCs are
not retrievable. This procedure is applicable to all concerned users/issuers of welding
consumables.

Responsibilities

HOD-CMC and HOD-QMD are responsible for implementation of this procedure.

HOD - QMD is responsible for maintaining this procedure.

DCC is custodian of this procedure.

6.

Methodology

6.1

Batch numbers of welding consumables shall be identified by CMC inspector wherever

TCs are not retrievable. Necessary inputs (P.O., Brand name, Manufacturer, AWS class,
size along with corresponding batch numbers) shall be reported to WTG-QMD engineer
for further communication with the consumable manufacturers.

6.2

WTG-QMD engineer shall communicate with all concerned manufacturers for duplicate
TCs and keep constant follow up.

6.3

Case-1 (Duplicate TCs are retrieved):

6.3.1 After duplicate TCs are received, these shall be reviewed by WTG-QMD engineer against
the code /specification requirements. After the TC results are found satisfactory,
reviewed TCs shall be sent to CMC Inspector for co-relation with welding consumable. If
TC results are not found satisfactory, message shall be communicated to CMC inspector
for transferring the material to quarantine area.
6.3.2 If

consumables, material shall be directly taken in stock by CMC stores officer. For welding
consumables other than CS/LTCS, random batches shall be selected and weld pads shall
be prepared in the following manner:
6.3.3 Minimum 10% sampling shall be carried out against each manufacturer and each brand
name. This activity shall be ensured by CMC inspector with the help of CMC stores
officer.
6.3.4 PMI analysis shall be carried out on weld pad under the supervision of QMD engineer of
Fabrication shop. If analysis result is found satisfactory, welding consumable shall be
taken into stock. If not found satisfactory, material shall be kept in quarantine area.

Case2 (Wherever duplicate TCs are not retrievable):

6.4.1 Case a: If project specification does not specify any additional requirements over and
above ASME Sec.II (C), material shall be taken into stock for carbon steels/LTCS based
on legible identification mark on the packets. For welding consumables other then
CS/LTCS, 100% PMI analysis shall be carried out covering all manufacturers, all brand
names and all batches. If the result is found satisfactory, material shall be taken in
stock. Otherwise material shall be kept in quarantine area.
6.4.2 Case-b: Wherever there is additional requirements over and above ASME Sec.II (C) and
duplicate TCs are not available, welding consumables shall be tested to confirm all the
requirements of code and specification. This activity shall be monitored by WTG-QMD
engineer in association with QMD engineer of Fabrication shop. If result is found
satisfactory, material shall be taken into stock. If unsatisfactory, material shall be kept in
quarantine area.
6.5

7.

Materials kept in quarantine area shall be dealt separately on a case to case basis.

Records
Records of all such testing shall be kept with or without the Test Certificate (as
applicable)

to demonstrate the conformity of the welding consumables.

Record in format for Welding Consumable Re-Identification Report Where TCs Are Not
Available / Not Traceable. (EPCMD-2-QM00-FMT-ME-214)
