Course

Standards/Elements: CCGPS, GPS/GSE (where applicable) and TAG Standards

MGSE3.NF.1 Understand a fraction 1 as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is
partitioned into b equal parts (unit fraction); understand a fraction as the quantity formed by a
parts of size 1. For example, 34 means there are three 1 4 parts, so 34 = 14 + 14 + 14 .
Standards For Mathematical Practice
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Students make sense of problems
involving fractions.
6. Attend to precision. Students use vocabulary such as numerator, denominator, and fractions
with increasing precision to discuss their reasoning.
Tag Standard: Advanced Communications Skills
Element 8: The students participates in small group discussions to argue persuasively or
reinforce others good points.

Enduring Understanding
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to explain in their own words a fraction as the quantity
formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into equal parts.

Essential Question(s)
What should students know when lesson is completed?

What relationships can I discover about fractions?

How are fractions used in problem solving situations?

Activating Strategy (for example: Hook/Mini-Lesson/Warm-Up/Connection to Prior Learning)

Using fraction circles with a document camera, tell the class a story about lunch last week at
school when you were so hungry that you decided to order a whole pizza for yourself. When
(insert another teachers name ) arrived to bring you STAR Math test scores, she saw the
pizza, and being hungry herself, asked to have some. You gave her one slice, but she said,
Thats not fair! I want the same amount that youre eating! So we decided to split the pizza
in half and we both got two equal pieces. Right as we were about to take the first bite, the
principal walked in. She was hungry too! We told her that we were having pizza and she
should join us. I tried to give her one slice, too, but she complained that everyone should get
the same amount, so we cut the pizza into three equal pieces. Then the CST walks in and
decides she would like some pizza too. Just like before, you tried to give her one slice but she
complained too about the same amount, so we cut the pizza into four equal pieces.
**You can continue with additional fractions.**
Explain to the students that they will be discovering more about fractions while reading nonfiction text.
Instructional Sequence and Activities including use of technology
1. Put the students into their groups and give each group 2-3 copies of their leveled reader.
2. Hand out the Windows Note Chart (some groups can complete Windows Note Chart on
the iPad)
3. Students will read their leveled reader. They will partner read within their group.
4. After the students have read their book, they will make notes that come to mind,
writing them in the appropriate section of the chart (facts, feelings, questions, ideas).
They do not need to make the sections even.
5. Have students meet with another person (not their partner) in the group and share
and/or explain their notes. Also have them observe and share similarities and
differences in what they wrote down.

Assessment Strategies
Formative: Have students share with the class their notes from their leveled reader on
fractions.

Differentiation
Scaffolds/ Interventions/Extensions/Enrichment

Students are grouped according to their F&P Reading Level.

Intervention: Have key points already underlined in the story to help students when filling out the
Windows Note Chart.
Enrichment: Students will read Fractions, Decimals and Percents by David Adler and fill out the
Windows Note chart. Then they will try and make connections between the two texts that they read
and support their connections with evidence from each text.
