T is a very popular beli ef that cards wer e inve nted

in orde r to amus e King Charl es VI of France at
a time when that monarch was mentally un stabl e Th i s
lege nd however like so many pretty stori es of the past
h as no foundation in fact as cards w e re known long
b e fore the mad monarch s days
I t is tru e that a cour t miniature paint e r named Grin
g on n eur did paint or origi nat e som e card s whi ch he
i ntroduced to the King but card s were r st us e d in the
East in ve ry anci e nt days and it i s a curiou s fact that
the other great world popular indoor gam e Ch es s al so
originated in the Ea st and i s still played to day by m eans
of a pack of card s
I t al so se ems obvious that cards reach e d the We st in
the same way and by the same rout e as Ch ess probably
thr ough the gipsi es that strange unconque rable Ea st e rn

researche s
Naturally a rac e of people with no s e ttled home or
nationality would nd much di m cul ty in moving th e ir
personal belongings from place to place and would appre
cia t e any amusem e nt that could be reduced to the form
of a pack of cards

Ch ess was the gre at Ea stern gam e and is in many

ways charact e ristic of a p e ople to whom Tim e was of no

Cards may have b ee n a gam e originally
but as known by the n sies they were only u sed for the
purpo se s of Divination or Fortun e T e lling and right up
to the pr esent day they still form the mo st popular an d

Known as Tarocchi or Tarots the Divination cards
numbe re d s e ve nty eight and we re without numb erso r
pips as we call them which we re introduced in Europe
for the sake of simplicity in the fourt ee nth century
Such packs are still in u se in parts of the Contin e nt but
the We st e rn pack has gradually tak e n its plac e bo t h for
t he purpo se of Divination and for playing gam e si n fact

it i s usual to sp e ak of a pack Of Playing cards a dis

tinction that i s hardly n e ce ssary nowadays as it is not
e a sy to obtain a pack of Tarot card s
unle ss one knows
where to go for the m The fact howe ve r that we still
u se this distinctive name
shows that at one time the
two kinds we re in u se side by side
I f w e compare a complet e Tarot pack of cards with

points of re se mblance and at the sam e tim e di scover

There are twenty one Tarot cards that are u sed solely
for purpos es of Divi nation and the d esigns of the se cards
vary greatly and have probably neve r had any r eal sign i
canc e In addition to the se th er e i s always a card known
as the Fool and as far as We know the card has always

no s e parate indication but s e rves to intensify the m ean

As sociat e d with a good card the FOO1 is strong e nough

sign s of good fortune shown by the oth e r cards will not

though the y may modify it to som e e xtent
I t is a curious fact that in certain card gam es w e still

Divination cards of the Tarocchi though these cards
were and still are use d for gam es as well as for Divination

in re gular u se
I n addition to the se twe nty two card s the Tarot pack

our mode rn packs are di vid e d But the superior W e st e rn

t he Warrior ca st e ; the Pi e ce of Mon e y which cl early
shows the M e rchant cast e ; and nally t he Baton or Club
gives us the Yeoman or Till e r of the soil
H ere th en we have four suit s of c ards each one re

that one is al most forced to the b e lie f that there must

be som e othe r explanation
It is important that we shO
u l d notice that the Tarot
suits cont ai n e d t en numb e red cards as in the modern
pack and al so four p rin cipal cards now known as Court
cards which originally con si sted of King Que e n Knight
and Jack four natural grade s of rank if we look upon

the Jack as t he

For some unknown reason the Knight was omitted
but the ide a of the four Court cards Was actually retained

illogical to continue the re duction from that en d of the

I f the Pique t pack had b ee n derive d from the original
Tarot pack of fty six cards it would undoubt e dly have
containe d On e Two Three Four Jack Knight Queen

I t is a ve ry curious fact that th ere should b e four suits
in a pack of card s although as alre ady shown the s e
balance nice ly with the four E stat e s : Prie st s or Rul e rs
Warriors or Fighting Men M erchant s or Arti sans and
the Till e rs of the Soil or common peopl e
An early

again two re d and two black
All thi s point s Clearly t o a common E as t e rn origin for
Chess and Card s and the prob ability se e m s t o be that
card playing or Divination has b een derive d from Chess
I t i s worth noting that the re is an Obscur e form of Chess
in whi ch the pi e ces are al l o ff the board at rst as are

It is a curious and fascinating point in this study of
the hi story of cards that the G erman invention of e m

not books ! The printing of the Bible in I 45 5 followed
shortly after the production of the rst packs of engrave d

no one kn ows how far reaching i ts remorseless grip may

t o de ny that the Pres e nt o r the Past does and must

t o what ext e nt this may go is
still a myst e ry
The e ss e ntial fe ature behind Cartomancy is e xactly
the same as in seve ral othe r forms of Divin ation the
person whos e future is to be read m u st in som e way
in uence matt e rs Som e Diviners use a Crystal that has
be e n h e ld in the hands of the que stioner who thus per
and so it is claimed cause s
son ally a ffe cts the Crystal
vi sions to appear therein Other Diviners ask for some
p e rsonal article closely as sociat e d with the person whose
future is in question Obviously this method is not quite
so safe as it is practically impossible to use any article
that is sol ely person al to one indi vidual
A glove or
handkerchi e f is often u sed but it seems perfe ctly Clear
that eithe r of the se must carry many othe r in uenc es
besides tho se of the owner A lock of hair seems b est
but eve n the n th e re may be the in uence of one s hair
dre sser o r on e s maide spe cially a lady s maid who
would handle he r mistres s s locks eve ry day in the o r
di n ary cour se of her duti e s
To a gre at e xtent this que stion of mixed in uences
must al so a ffe ct the Crystal apart from the Clos e inti
mat e touch o f the Divin e r if he or S he holds it in the
hands For this re ason a black ve lve t pad is often used
for the support of the Crystal after the questioner has
handled it
But it is obvious that this precaution cannot be fully
effective as e ach qu estioner i n turn must han dl e the
C rystal and thus a ff e ct it though to what e xt e nt is not
known
The most accurat e result I have e ve r com e
across and it was startling in i ts exact truth was made

It wo ul d the refore be hopelessly ridiculous to expect

the cards to repeat any one set of de tails concerning the
q ue stioner s futur e indeed one cannot re asonably e xp ect
the repetition of eve n one dominant point unless the
questioner has sufci ent will power to kee p his or her
thoughts steadily upon the one point
If you u se the Cards or the Crystal to oblige a fri end
who is idly curious you may de al in twenty different
ways an d never get two that agree Wha t else can you
expect
It is therefore advisable to make sure that your sitter
is re ally in earnest and then persuade him or her to con
centrat e their thought s upon one principal dominant
idea let it be what it will Then you may reasonably
expect to get good re sult s
Let me give o n e earn e st word of warn ing never offer
to pretend t o foretell the Future
that is impossibl e
As far as we know the re is n o de nite xed or rigid

u
Future for any o n e of s all you can do is to point out
how the subj e ct is dri fting how he or she is likely to be
placed or affected wh e the r a ce rtain thing desirable or
unpleasant is likely to come about n e ve r that it wi ll
come about
Free will is the key note of al l Dame Nature s efforts
and every one of u s is master of his own De stiny within
the limitations of his own person al ity B ear that clearly
in mind when you read the cards Never stat e that a
thing wi ll happen but that it app ears probabl e in the
present course of affairs For instance if an illn ess is
in di cated it may in many cases b e avoide d altoge ther
or greatly modie d in its e ffe ct s if r ea sonable care and
precaution are taken It is j ust the sam e with p e opl e and
affairs we n ee d not drift their way if we choose to
S truggle aga in st them

H I STORY OF THE PACK OF CARDS

The Fut u re is in each person s own hands but the f all

of the cards if co rrectly i nt erpret e d may serve as a warn
ing against po ssible dangers that lie ahead of us or
alternatively they may serve as a stimul us and cause us
to put forth still great e r efforts to secure some desirable
result
Before describing the various methods of Card Divin a
tion I S houl d li ke to po int out that it is not n e cessary
to memorise the various me anings of the cards The
simplest plan is to use a special pack and mark the
m e anings and combinations on the face of each card I n
t hi s way you avoid all te di ous re fe re nce s and quick ly
l earn how to read from any particular fal l of the cards
It is not conside red po ssible to work for your own
information with any de gre e of accuracy but that need
not pre vent your re gul ar practice with the cards Shufe
and cut as if you were a stranger to yourself ask any
reasonable question that occur s to you and in that way
ende avour to gathe r from the fall of the cards what
answe r you wo ul d give a stranger u nder simil ar Circum
stances Practic e will soon make you proci e nt and wil l
open your e ye s to the wonderful combinations that are
po ssibl e unde r Cart omancy
B e gin with an ordi nary modern pack of Playing cards
but go on to the full Tarocchi Divination You need not
b e e xtravagant over the pur chas e of a g e nuine Tar o t
pack but c an e asily cut twe nty six cards of the ordi nary
size upon which you can writ e the n e c essary description s
For the Tarot Divination cards you n ee d only numb e r
yo ur blanks from one to twe nty one ; the n you n ee d a
Fool and n al ly the four Knight s one for each suit I n
thi s way you can obt ai n a cheap and very interesting
pack of Tarot Divination card s with whic h you can
entertain and possibly help your friends

six cards are us e d the four Twos are added The Tarot
pack consists of se venty eight card s but in some of the

Ge nerally the meanings of the cards remain fairly con

always such but the particular or S pecic meaning of
it is al tered somewhat by the method of using it For

example the Ten of Spad e s by one method mean s lo sses

to be take n as the ab solute determination of the cards
but rather as a gui de to the spe cic values in relation
In this conn e ction it is as w ell to not e the m e anings

also clos e ly related to domestic matt ers and to the soci al

The cards having b ee n duly shufed the con sultant

T H RE E S

The pack of thirty two cards is shuf e d by the en qui rer

and cut with the left h and int o thr e e heaps The D iviner
takes the centre heap rst places the last heap upon it
and the rst cut heap on top of all ; then turn in g the pack
face upwards he de al s off three c ar ds onl y If these
contain two or more of a suit the hi ghes t in val ue is
withdrawn and placed face upwards on the table
The others ar e thrown face downwar ds to form a fresh
heap
I f the three cards are all of the same val ue such as
thr e e Kings three Eights etc they are all to be added
to those face upwards on the table When you have gone
through the pack in this way you begi n all over again
till either thirteen fteen or seve nteen car ds are face
upwards before you The card representing the enquirer
must al ways be among these so if you reach twelve
fourteen or sixteen without the type card you must at
once pick it from the pack and add it to the end O f the
row thus completin g the necessary u neven n u mb e r The
row must al ways be buil t from left t o right If the W ish
c ar d the Nine of He arts is am ong these it is considered
a very fortunate signthe n e arer it fall s to the type
card the greater the chances of prosperity and good
fortun e
One card from each end of the row is now to be t aken
and placed together on the table and their meaning read

togeth e r b earing in m ind that the card from the right is

Suppose we take the Eight
al ways the more powerful
of Spades from the right and the Seve n of Clubs from the
l e ft we nd that a slight illness or accident will result
in the receiving of a sm al l su m of money On the other
hand if the Seven of Clubs comes from the right and the
Eight of Spades from the left the meaning will b e quite
different that the rece ipt of a small su m of mon e y will
result in a slight illness or accid ent
I n this way all the cards but one are pai red o ff leaving
t he
Surpris e card alon e and the re ading of this c ard
will affe ct eve ryt hi ng else
There i s another way of working this arrangement
whi ch is only slightly di ffer e nt The pack having been
shuf e d and cut into thr e e heaps the p e rformer takes up
the centre heap and remove s the bottom card i e the
card that is face uppermost Thi s i s placed on the table
as the rst card of the required row for d e termining the
decre e s of Fate The last cut heap is then simil arly dealt
with the bottom card being plac e d second in the row
and the remainder placed on top of the centre heap as
in the r st method So ag ai n wi th the r st cut heap
originally on top of the pack
The cards are now d e alt in threes as before but the
highest of each three is cho sen quite irrespective of suit
For instanc e should you turn up the Seve n of Hearts
the Ac e of Clubs and the Jack of Hearts the Ace would
b e chosen in this system whereas the Jack would have
b e en selected unde r the original m e thod If three cards
of equal val ue or three cards al l of the same suit should
appear all three are adde d to the row the card face
upp ermo st b e ing adde d r st and so on
Go on in this way till the re are only two cards left in
your hand ignoring of course all those thro wn away as
,

useless In the rst method the rej ected cards are used
in order to complete the necessary odd number for the
D ivination but that is never done under the present
system U nder the origin al plan it wi l l often happe n
that the t hree car ds are al l of differ e nt suits and must
therefore all be di scarded That is not the case by the
pre s e nt simpler method as the highest card i s chosen
ea ch t ime irrespectiv e of suit Also you be gi n wi th three
car ds which makes a further difference
Thus it happens that out of thirty two cards you are
bound to have at l east twe lve cards in your row and if
you have t urn e d up three of a suit or thr e e of a val ue
at any time the numb e r wi ll be in c reas e d
Retai n the las t two cards in your hand and coun t the
cards face upwards in your mystic row t o see if you
have an O dd number If so disca rd the two cards left
ov e r and proceed as be fore t o give your Divination by
picki ng up the outside card from e ach end
I f howe ver the num ber of your row i s even see if
the type card ( r e pres e nting the enqui rer ) is among them ;
if not pick it from the di scards an d add it to the extreme
right of yo ur row I f the type card is al ready there
se e if the Wish card ( Nin e of Hearts ) is al so present ; if
not you add it to the end at the ri ght If both of these
are in the row before you look for the en quirer s Thought
card i e the Jack of the same sui t as th e type card that
repr e sent s the enquirer
I f all three of the se cards are in the row the n add the
higher of the two cards remai n ing in your hand but
if by any perve rse C hanc e they are both of the same
value th e n the Fates are not propitious and the enquirer
must come again on some other day as the row m u st
consist of an odd number of cards

day of the month and upon an odd day of the week

S u nday being the rst day in this reckoning This can
generally be decided by counting the letters in the full
Chri stian and surna m es Thus the name T HOMA S A TKI N S
contains twe lve letters and therefore an even n um bered
day would b e more propitious for consulting the cards
Assuming the row of twe lve cards has be en completed
they are pair e d off as in a pre vious experiment by taking
o ne card from either end of the row the right hand card
bein g the active or controlling card of the pair In the
former experiment we worked with an O dd number of
cards and that method sho ul d be used on odd numbered
d ays for the benet of people with odd numb e red names
When working with twelve cards under the present

of course ; but the
face down heap of three cards takes its place an d is call ed

the pairs come out as follows : Queen of D iamonds and

where the cards are generally d ealt from the top of the

it is placed on the table face upwards t o form a fresh
pack AS soon as a Spade is reached that card is al so

This co u nting is done to the l eft an d when you reach

the extre m e card the one r st put on the table you go
back to the end card at the right and 5 0 continue yo u r
coun t if necess ary B ut it often happen s that al l t hr ee
do minant cards ar e reached before you come to the card
on the extre m e left Of these three cards the one n al ly
neares t the right is the m ost powerful It cle ar ly d e pends
upo n the position in the row of the typ e card itself whether
the third seventh or thi rteenth is the import ant card
It is generally agreed that by this m ethod only ne ar
events can be pre dicted certain ly it does not cover m ore
than a m onth
A somewhat si m il ar m ethod is used in England with
the full pack but instead of using the Spade suit as the
guide for the cards to be picked out you go by the points
of the car dsthe Ace i n this method counts as one The
pack having been shufed and cut into three heaps and
rebuilt as before you deal the c ar ds fro m the top placing
each one face upwards on the table as you do so While
you do this you count al oud : one two thr ee four ve
six seven eight ni ne ten Jack Queen King one etc
If any card irrespective of suit turn s up at the proper

count for inst an ce if the fth card re al ly is a Five it

is placed as one of the fateful row and the co un tin g
continues as before
When the pack is e xha ust e d the discarded car ds are
turn e d over and deal t out again as before t urni ng each
one up in the Spade suit method but you must be care
ful after the second time to note at which c ard you ce as e
calling as when you start the third de al you do not re
start the counting at one but continue from where you
left off
In addition to the cards that turn up at their own
proper c al ls you also add to the fat e ful row any cards

that turn up three or more at a time whether at their

proper call or not Thus t hr ee Tens three Fives woul d
be adde d m erely because they follow each other in value
but three Hear ts or three Spad e s would be ignored as in
thi s method the deal ing takes no account of suits
The Diviner now forms a rough cro ss from the c ards
in the row placing the r st card from the extreme left
t o form the top of the cross the next card to form the
bottom of the cross the third to form the right and the
four th the l e ft win gs The next four cards are b ui lt above
these in the s am e way top bottom right left and so
you build the c ro ss till al l the chos en cards are

The top hea p is read r st as the pre di ctions from those

First take the pack of thi rty two sel e cted cards ( v iz
the Ace King Queen Jack Ten Nine Eight and Seven
of each suit ) ha v i ng b e fore xed upon the one you intend
t o represent yourself suppo sing always you are makin g
the e ssay on your own b ehalf I f not it must r e pre sent
the person for whom you are acting I n doing thi s it is
n e c essary to rememb e r that the card chos e n should b e
ccor di n g to the compl e xion of the choos e r King or Que e n
of Diamonds for a very fair person the same of Hearts fo r
o n e rath e r darker Clubs for o n e dark e r still and Spad e s
only for one very dark indeed The card chosen also lo ses
its signi cation and simply b e com es the re pre s e ntative of
a dark or fair man or wom an as the case may b e
Having settl e d this point shufe the cards and eithe r
cut th e m or have the m cut for you ( accordi ng to wh e ther
you are acting for yours e lf or another person ) taking care
to use the left hand That don e turn them up by thr ee s
and eve ry tim e you nd in the se tripl e ts two of the same
suit such as two H e arts
two Clubs e tc withdraw the
highest card and place it on the table b e fore you If the
triplet should chance to b e all of the same suit the highest
card is still to be the only o n e withdrawn ; but sho ul d i t
consist of thr ee of the same value but di fferent suits such
the y are all to be appropriated We
as three Kings e t c
wi ll suppose that after ha v ing turned up the cards three
by three you have b e en able to withdr aw si x leavin g
twenty six which you shufe and cut and again turn up
by t hr ees acting pre cis e ly as you di d before until you
have Obtained either t hi rteen ft e en or seve nt ee n cards
Recollect that the numb e r mus t always b e un e ve n and
that the card r e presenting the person for whom the essay
is made must make one of it Even if the requisite thirteen

You now shu f e the pack of thirty two selected cards

which as we b e fore stated consist of t he Ac e King Queen
Jack Te n Nine Eight and Seven of e ach suit e ither
cut them yo urself or if acting for anoth e r p e rson let that

The Jack of H earts is a gay young bachelor the Ace

The full pack of card s is us e d and must b e thoroughly

Aft e r the pack has b e en thoroughly mix e d the name

o f the bottom card should b e noted on paper for r e fer e nce
as this card act s the part of S ign i c ato r in other word s
it represents the e nquir e r Th e n the pack must be ou t
o nce with the l e ft hand and the expo sed card should al so
be not e d this card represents the thoughts wish or most
important matt e r in which the e nquirer i s int e re sted
This can of cour se b e anythin g from a busin e ss d e al a
l ove affair t o t he serious illness of a fri e nd or of ones elf
The cut portion of the pack must now b e replac e d so
that the original botto m card r e tai ns this position Then
seven card s are de al t one by one fac e upwards so as to
form a row on the table thes e cards run fro m left t o
right N ow lay out three other similar rows each one
,

1 16

Now com es the part that ne e ds a l ittle c are and thought

but when understood it i s really quite simple The rough
s quare represents a lunar month beyond which the card s
will not guide you and nothing can be do ne in the way of
divination unle ss you can x the position of the two cards
expo sed when the pack w as cut as a lready e xplain e d the
r st of these r e prese nts the Enquirer and the s e cond his
or her Thoughts
Glanc e car e fully over the expo sed cards and see if e ithe r
or both of th es e p e rsonal cards have b ee n expo sed in
the lunar squar e I f you are fortunate and both personal
cards are shown on the tabl e you can at once mak e your
d e ci sion in the way t o be e xplain e d later
But if you nd only o n e pe rsonal card expo sed you are
allowed to continue the pre paration in the hop e that the
second card will tur n up b e for e you read what the card s
for e t ell
You must note the row in which yo u nd the one p er
sonal card b e caus e that particular row must not b e touched
nor any row above it So if t hi s p er sonal card fall s in the
bottom row you can do no more and mu st r e ad the
cards as th e y lie on the table I f however it is in the
third row from the top thi s would leave the bottom r ow
fre e to b e alt er e d if in the s e cond row you would have the
two bottom rows at your dispo sal whil e if it fall s in the
top row the n you can change the following twe ntyone cards
What e ve r it may b e o n e two or three rows you take
up the u n u sed portion of the pack and plac e extra cards
upon the already expo sed cards on the table and go o n
to the tw e nty e ight h card To make this cl e ar suppo se o n e
p er sonal card i s shown in the t Op row of the original de al
You now commence on the r st card of the s e cond row
,

118

CA RD FORTUN E TELLIN G

and

di stribut e twe nty one cards thus cov e ring all the thr e e
lower rows Thi s l e av e s only thr e e cards in hand so
w hat e v e r happe ns you cannot go furth e r and would have
t o r e ad the card s as th e y lie with only o n e personal card
t o guid e you unl ess the s e cond has now been expo sed
B ut in mo st case s when one pe rsonal card is e xpos e d in
t he top row its companion will app e ar d uring thi s s e cond
d elive ry of the cards
Now suppo se t he one per son al card is shown in the
s e cond row of the original layout You now start cove ring
by placi n g a fr esh card from the unus e d portion of the pack
o n to the r st card of t he third row and continue to t he
end of the squar e Thi s m eans t he addition of fourt ee n
c ard s
but still l e ave s only twe nty eight cards e xpos e d
I t i s quite probable that the se cond pe rsonal card w ill
now b e vi sibl e in which ca se your pr e paration i s complete
a n d you read t he cards as w e shall e xpl a in
But if by C hanc e the se cond per sonal card i s not then
shown you are al lowed a third att e mpt But you must
b e careful to rememb e r that you onl y hav e ten card s in
hand now and you m u st cove r whole rows at a time or
non e at all So in this case instead of starting with the
r st card of th e third row you l e ave that row intact an d
p lace a fre sh card on the rst place in the bottom row
This again l e aves you wi th three cards in hand and you
proceed to your divination as b e for e explain e d whether
the s e cond person al card is expo se d or not
I f the o n e e xpo se d p ersonal card is in the third row of
t he original s quare you can of cour se only r e cove r the
bottom row which you proce e d t o do Wh e n you have
a dd e d se v e n cards se e if t h e second p e r sonal card i s now
expos e d if it i s you stop and give your r e ading I f not
o u d e al out s e v e n more c ards and again e xamin e th e m
y
O bviously you can do this three times when you have only
-

C ARD FORTUN E TELL I N G

1 20

I n that case you can only ad v i se your client to go on

hopin g and working to his e n d as nothing will come his
way for the next four weeks You can offer t o consult the
cards again for him or her but not under fourteen days
If only one person al card is exposed in the lunar square
you study the cards from that to the nal card explaining
that the decision will be delayed over the four we eks and
that a fre sh cons u ltation of the cards in a fortnight s time
wil l help to clear matt e rs up Meanwhi l e t he suits of the
cards following the personal card will enable you t o
encourage or discourage your enquirer
I f n either of the pe rson al card s is shown you can give
no decision either way the cards must be consult e d again
or the decision accepted as a negative or unfavourable one
Apart from the qu e stion of suits you must also study
the values of the card s The Court card s repre sent pe opl e
the King and Qu een being mal e and fem al e friends the
Jacks business acquain tan ces or strangers if the matt e r
is purely personal
Y o u must al so remember that the higher common e r
cards Six Seven Eight Nine and Ten are mor e powerful
for good or for evil than the lowe r card s Two Three Fo ur
and Five The Ace is always very powe rful
There is one other point for consid e ration and thi s
applie s to cases wher e the re are a large numb e r of cards
between the two pe rsonal cards or alt e rnatively when only
one pe rson al card is expos e d Y ou are al lowed to cancel
cards in couples under certa i n condi tions For instance
a He ar t can cancel a corr esponding Spad e or a Diamond
c an cel a Club but the Court cards and Aces are not to be
touched You can pai r eith e r a Two Thr e e Four or Five
with an y oth e r of the same seri e s
or a Six S e ven Eight
N e or Ten with any other of that particular s e ri e s subj e ct
t o the rule as to Suit val ues
,

UNUSUAL METHODS OF TELL I N G

1 21

Thus a Two of Heart s and a Five of Spades can be paire d

and both cards are the n removed from the lunar square
toge the r with any cards unde rn e ath th e m in case yo u
have form e d the row more than once I n the same way
from the high e r seri es you can pair a Ten of Diamonds
with an Eight of Club s and so ou any of the high e r
Diamonds can b e pair e d with any of the higher Club s the
H e arts with the Spad es any of t he lowe r Diamonds wit h
any of the lower Club s the H e arts with the Spades
The importanc e of thi s pairing tog e th e r with the removal
of all cards a ffe ct e d will b e found far gre at e r in actual
practic e than it may app e ar on pap e r Suppo se for i n
stanc e that you have both personal cards expos e d wit h
nin e other card s b e twe e n th e m s e ve n of th ese b e ing Red
cards and two Bl a ck I f by good fortun e you can pair the
two Black cards with two Red card s you will have an
unbrok e n s eri es of v e R ed cards Thi s i s not quit e so
fortunat e as an ori gi n al s e que nc e of re Red card s but it
shows that al l obstacles can b e ov e rcom e and that is t he
important point
I n the sam e way if the colours had b ee n reverse d you
would be fac e d with a se ri e s of ve Black cards far mor e
di fcult to ove rcome than the original series of s e ve n
Black and two R e d cards
Thi s Lunar Squar e system i s so fascinating and cl ever
as well as b eing ve ry reliabl e that we strongly recomm e nd

would have greatly helped matters for the enquire r but
Diamonds are only the third suit as regards good fortune
and are obviously not strong enough t o ght successful ly

There are thr ee Ac e s but o n e of them is of the fateful
Spade suit though against this is the fact that the Club

strengthens the ir in uence B ut the Ace of Spad es symbol
of D e ath or Di saster is always an extrem ely sinister and
powerful card and its powe r h e r e is enhanced by the trebly

fortune ( the Ac e s ) would j ust b e lost through the in uence
of a dark woman This malevolent in uence may not be
in the enquire r s own life the woman may control one of

that when this process is completed you c an not have more

Master Card and m ay indeed only have two cards

process is as indi cated applied to each of the seven rows
when you now reduce your gure to its n al fateful shape
by throwi ng away all cards be yond three coun ting from the

W e will now give a few methods of reading from the f u ll

Tarot pack but as it is an old system of divination th er e
are only a limit e d number of the se u nlike those us e d with
the m odern pack where we nd at l east a score of well
kn own syst e ms of tellin g In the rst place the e nquirer
must be quit e certain as to time t hi s must be made C le ar
be fore the cards are touched He or she must al so decide
whether a simple answer to a qu est ion is what he wants
or whether he prefers a ge neral divination of the cour se
of events Th e s e point s will control the see r s int e rpr e ta
tion It must also b e rem e mbered that with the Tarot
c ar ds the Ace is mer e ly the On e and that the four Court
cards are far more powerful than the common e r cards
and that the ve higher commoner cards are corre spond ingly
more powerful than the ve lower ones although t he latter
include the Ace
A simpl e question can be answ ered by the general C harac
ter of the cards after they have been expo sed by one or

or physic al affairs of the enquir e r the m iddl e row governs

his mental life his friendships and a ffections his hope s and
s o o n ; while the top row represents the unseen in uences
at work on his or he r life
Another method on somewhat similar lines is as follows
The enquirer draws out one card t o represent hi mself and
this is placed face upwards on the table Then he must
thoroughly shuf e the pack Now the seer goes through
the pack and builds up the rows of seven cards worki ng
from right to l e ft ; the r st row being on top as in the
previous method B ut the cards must n ot be de alt in
sequ e nce the rst card placed on the table must be the
top card of the pack after it has be e n shu f ed the second
card will be the sev en th card from it in the pack in other
words the original eighth card This is plac e d to the left
of the top card and forms the second card in the top row
of seven Th e n count out the next s e venth card and place
this as the third of the row to the left of the second card
Obviously this will be the fteenth original card in the
shu f ed pack
Go on in this way taking out every seve nth card you
come to and adding it t o the gure the second row com
m en c i n g as soon as you hav e displayed seven cards
To
avoid confusion it is wi se to plac e e ach card not r e quired
at the bottom of the pack thus you place the top card on
the table the second at the bottom of the pack and count
One the third b elow and count Two and so on You
wi ll n d that the ori ginal bottom card wil l form the fth
card of the centre row on the table The reading is given
as in the rst method
A third method of tellin g the Tarot cards is known as the
Great Figure of Fat e As it is rather compli cated till you
have actually tested it we give a diagram t o S how how the
cards should be used in order t o build up the gure prope rly
,

nquirer must Choose a card t o represent him self and

this i s placed in the centr e of the table The pack is now

ed and h an ded to the s e e r who deals the cards in
prope r sequence accor di ng to the numb e rs in t he followin g
diagram t he top car d going at 1 the next card at 2 and
so on You will e as ily se e that the gure forms a triangl e

using a complicat e d gur e unle ss you are anxious t o

The m e thod of di v ination i s based upon the ide a that the

triangle show the Pre s e nt while the left hand e leven cards
o f e ach gure will indicate the Future
The divination is mad e by combinations of three cards
o f which the chosen card repr e se nting the enquir e r and
shown in t he c e ntre of t he Triangle in the diagram is
This card is combined with numb ers I and
always one
3 4 the two bottom card s of the s e rie s showing the Past
then with 2 and 3 5 and so o n with each couple for Past
Present and Future
Anoth e r simpl e method is for the e nquirer t o shu fe the
pack and then the se er arra n ges a row of sevent e e n cards
in sequ e nce beginning with the t op card of the pack
This makes the ninth card t he e xact c e ntr e either fro m
the right or from the left The cards are read in thre e s
as in the Gr eat Figure but in thi s ca se the centr e card
repre sents the e nquirer and you pair from the ends Thus
you read cards I 9 1 7 tog e ther for the immediate Pre s e nt
or for some incid e nt in the Past which the e nquirer can
name as a starting point such as a rec e nt business arrang e
m e nt a proposal of marriag e and so on Then you read
cards 2 9 1 6 together for a few days further ah e ad num
b e rs 3 9 1 5 for lat e r still and so on for the whol e row
This method does not take long and is con sidered v e ry
e ffe ctive for dealing when a simple straightforward divina
tion is required such as in the case s indicated
