ELECT 209

Second Semester Industrial Electricity


PREREQUISITES: Elect 204
DESCRIPTION: 18 weeks, 3 Units, 3 hours lecture. The
operational theory, practice and electrical codes as associated
with Direct Current Motors and Generators. An introduction to
Alternating Current and AC circuits.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: The course will include
lectures, problem solving from designated chapter materials in
the course outline. Selected problems are the responsibility of
the student through homework assignments in accordance with
the course outline.
REQUIRED TEXTS:
1. Delmar's Standard Textbook of Electricity; 2nd Edition,
Stephen L. Herman
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: All assigned work is to be
completed by the student and turned in by due date. Late
assignments will reduce in value at a rate of 5% per day late.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is 25% of your grade. Roll will
be taken before and at the end of every class meeting. It is
your responsibility to sign the roll sheet at every class
meeting. Students are expected to attend and participate in
class. Each missed class will deduct from the total points
given for attendance unless the instructor is notified in
advance. Three late arrivals or early leaving will equal one
absence. An instructor may lower the grade or drop a student
from a class for too many absences. A student missing more
than two weeks in a row, or more than 20 percent of a course,
shall be dropped by the instructor. If there are special
circumstances, such as a long-term illness or death in the
immediate family, the student may be reinstated by decision of
the instructor. (From the Schedule of Classes).

EXAMINATION AND QUIZES: There will be four tests


covering AC & DC topics. The exams will include all of the topics
presented prior to the exam. Quizzes will be on a bi-weekly basis
and will cover assigned homework material. Quizzes may also be
unannounced and given at the discretion of the instructor. The
dates for the tests are on the outline. Cheating may result in
dismissal. No makeup quizzes or tests will be given.
FORMULA SHEETS: A formula sheet may be used for the
exams. A single sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper with formulas on one
side only. This sheet is for formulas only. Examples, drawings,
problems, answers to problems or any other notations other than
formulas will cause the sheet to be removed from the student
before the exam.
GRADING PROCEDURES: The final course grade will be
determined by the tests, any quizzes given, labs, homework, and
attendance. Your grade will be based upon the following

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT: Pagers and phones are not to be
heard by the instructor (set to vibrate or off). CD Players, radios,
tape players, MP3 players are not to be used during lecture or lab
periods. Laptop computers may be used for 200B class work only.
Games being played on any electronic equipment will result in the
student being excused from class and an absence recorded.
