Unit 8 Test

Reading
1 Read about football and explain why the words below are important. (10 marks)
What is the most popular sport in the world? Its football! More than 240 million people play it
regularly in over 200 countries. Its difficult to know where and when football began. There are
some people who think it started in China in the second or third century but other people have
different ideas. We know that by the 13th century people were playing a sport like football in many
different countries. However, at that time there werent many rules! There were hundreds of people
on the pitch and the game was more like a big fight than a sport! The modern game of football
really started in the UK in the 19th century and it was at Cambridge University where the first clear
rules were made. The Football Association, which is very important in football today, was formed in
1863 and soon after this they made some important changes to the rules. A new rule was that
players mustnt run with the ball in their hands. Many football clubs didnt agree with this rule and
they left the Football Association and started a new sport rugby!
