A leader should be a visionary and have more foresight than an

employee. A leader should have higher grit and tenacity, and be
able to endure what the employees cant. A leader should have
higher endurance and ability to accept and embrace failure. If you
want to win in the 21st century you have empower others, making
sure other people are better than you are. Then you will be
successful. Adopt and change before any major trends or
changes.-- Jack Ma
Jack Mas statement above about how a leader should be has become
powerful and inspiring viewpoint for everyone including me. His statement
clearly explain that the quality of a good leader is defined by his tenacity,
vision, and his capability. A good leader also must have ability to pull out
the best side of their employees. Jack Mas expression certainly inspiring
me to be an impactful/greater leader in the future and it changes all my
perspective on leadership.
In this blog, I will explore my personal leadership style, my vision of
leadership, and Jack Mas leadership as he is the leader who has inspired
me. Furthermore, I will discuss about the feedback that I have received
from my teams member with regard to my leadership style, and how their
reflection will helps me to become a greater leader in my family business
and improve my skills as I further my development as a leader.
My Leadership Vision and Style
According to Friedman (2008) , essential tools for help someone to
define what they want to accomplish in their life, focusing someones
concern on what matters most and what kind of leader that they wish to
be is LEADERSHIP VISION. He also stated A useful vision has to be

rooted in your past, address the future, and deal with todays realities
(Friedman,2008) . It make me realized that vision has a compelling
aspects that has function to motivate, inspire and engage people. Nanus
(1992) examine that the right vision has 5 important characteristics,
which is :
it should creates meaning in workers live,
attracts commitment,
bridges the present to the future
surpass the status quo, set up a standard of excellence
can energizes people.
According to Sergiovanni (1990), A leader's efforts to develop a
shared vision have been described as bonding when leaders and
followers want to meet a common goal , they will shared set of values and
commitment "that bond them together in a common cause". Echoing what
Jack Ma and Nanus earlier statement and Sergiovanni theory, my
leadership vision is shared vision that I want to become a leader that
can influence, impact, and inspire others instead of forcing them through
coercive ways. To achieve this vision, I need enhance my skills to be a
leader that can be an inspiration and example for others because people
tend to constantly observe what their leaders do and who they are. Thus,
leaders cannot avoid being some kind of example (Kippenberger,1997)
In my third blog, I examine management and leadership style,
introduced a leader who use my favourite leadership style, and which
leadership style that I choose. As I reflect on my self and based on my
experience, I realized that Democratic Style is the type of leader that I
want to be the most. WHY?

When I work at my fathers company, I see two different style of

leadership. First, when my father leads the company with Autocratic Style
and secondly, when my brother implies Participative Style towards his
leadership. Democratic Style is when the leader includes his/her
employees in the decision making process, but still maintain the final

decision making authority (The Performance Juxtaposition,2015). What my

brother always said to his employees is Let's work together to solve
this. . . show that he applies Democratic Style . The result of his
leadership is magnificent. Our company generate greater revenue and
increase employees satisfaction.

Leader Who has Inspired me

Who doesnt know Jack Ma? As ex-CEO Alibaba, Jack Ma has success
generate $3.06 billion in revenue for his company. As stated Zakkour
(2014), The companys Sept. 19 IPO raised more than $20 billion and
gave Alibaba a market cap of $240 billion. It also made Jack Ma, already
the richest man in China, one of the most wealthy men in the world with a
net worth of more than $18 billion.
Jack Ma also known as Crazy Ma because of his unorthodox
management philosophy
entrepreneurs need to let others have control and should do what is right
for their business not their (Ma, 2015) . He success make his employee
become super loyal, hardworking group of executive, managers and
employees. He creates his management style for Alibaba that combine
western culture and Chinas culture, and proved that East and West can
meet and create something beautiful outcome.
I learn 3 most important things from Jack Ma, how important is:
Teamwork: Ma expects his employees to collaborate as a team. He
encourages input from his employees in the decision making
process and commit to teams objectives. It is the part which is
extremely and indispensable to a successful leader.
Passion : He encourage HIS employee to have passion in both
developing new services, products and serving customers.
Perseverance and courage: He never thinks about giving up
because he believed his vision and he has a large courage to
achieve his goal
-Zakkour (2014)From the study case of Jack mas leadership style, it shows that he uses
democratic leadership style as one of his methods. He encourages his
employee to involves in every decision making which success increase his
employees satisfaction and have high loyalty.
How ready am I to lead others? Feedback on My Leadership Style
"Without knowledge, business leaders can not make educated decisions.
Uneducated decisions lead to a higher rate of failure, which can have
detrimental impacts on a business." (Mayhew, )

Nowadays, upward feedback have important role to the success of

leaders, specially in workplace. It helps leaders to impove their
effectiveness by providing important informations that helps leaders still
aware of their environment. The effectiveness of a leader based on
whether or not the followers to provide upward feedback. (Kilburn and
Cates, 2010)
Over the course of taking leadership module, I have received
feedbacks from my peers and teammates. They assess my leadership
skills based on group assignments, team building activities and my ability
to become a leader on several occasions. Not only positive feedbacks that
I got from my collages but also the negative ones. They describe me as a
good leader who can manage her team members, hardworking
,encouraging, and motivational leader.
This positive feedbacks doesnt make me arrogant and stop to
develop my ability to be a good leader. Moreover, i also received negative
feedbacks that in some cases, I less able to make a decisions and let the
team members to take more control. Thus, as adopting Democratic Style, I
still need to maintain the final decision.
Developing as a Leader
The key to success develop leadership skills is keep Studying, reading and
taking courses. People didnt born with certain leadership qualities, but
they are missing others. A great leader will identified what leadership
skills that they are missing and consciously acquire those missing skills
(Tracy, n.d.)
Based on that statement, I realized that it is important to keep improve
myself to achieve my ideal vision of leadership. Moreover, my MBA
experience open my opportunity to develop my ability and leadership
skills throughout some evaluation such as PDP Plan and PDP Plan in my
APS class (term1). I desire to improve my motivating skills
communication skill and decision-making skills.
As I stated in the opening of this blog that my vision is becoming a leader
that can influence, impact, and inspire others, I must have the courage
to face the changes and embrace it, and continually improving myself
throughout feedbacks from my collages.

Hi Ivander!
Thanks for your opinion, well I agree with you in term of the challenging
that face by leader who try or applied ethical issue within the company.
However, In this article I would like to highlight that this is not about social
responsibility as a company but also discuss about how an ethical
leadership will affect the organisation (staffs and management), product
and also to the society. As you said
The

leaders are the most influential persons in their

member self development and the organisation future
I agree with your above statement because leaders not only lead to moral
conscience and social responsibility but it also lead to the ethical value
and belief which influencing people to have the same ethical principle. I
believe everyone of us can make changes, become a great leader, and
create positive impacts to the world.
Cheers!
