What do the numbers mean? They are an index of satisfaction, scored out of a maximum of 100. In our Readers Travel Awards 2013 questionnaire
(June-July 2013 issue and at www.cntraveller.in), you were asked to choose the best that the world has to offerfrom hotels and spas to airlines and
airports. You were then asked to rate your choices according to various criteria, such as service, culture and value for money. From your responses, we
calculated the average mark on each criterion, and used this to provide the overall satisfaction percentage figure that you see on these pages.

Why Dubai?
More like, why not
Dubai? India now accounts
for the highest number of visitors
to the emirate. It seems like you
cant get enough of the glitzy hotels,
great food and range of kid-friendly
entertainment, from the ski slope to
the aquariums. But we know its
the shopping that keeps you
busiest. Dont worry, we
wont tell.

s Indian travellers, we
have gazed enviously at
international airports
their stylish restaurants, plush
spas and transit hotels have
always caught our fancybut
that stops now. A new era of
comfort and choice is underway
in our cities, with 12,000 crore
spent on big plans. Slated to open
soon, Mumbais Chhatrapati
Shivaji International Airports
Terminal 2 will be the next big thing
after New Delhis Indira Gandhi
Internationals stylish Terminal 3,
which began operations in 2010.
And these bright stars are not
alone in Indias developing skyline.
According to the Airports Authority
of India (AAI), 35 airports around
the country (including those
in Amritsar, Goa, Chandigarh,
Indore, Chennai and Kolkata)
are expanding at a total cost of
6,400 crore. Accordingly, the AAI
notes that the countrys annual
passenger-handling capacity
has risen by 1.61 crore in the last
six years. In 2008, Hyderabads
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport
became the first in India to install a
four-level, in-line baggage-handling
system and, in 2013, Kolkatas
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
International Airport extended
the two parallel runways built
to complement its five-storeyed
integrated passenger terminal.
Chennais international and
domestic airports will soon
be connected by a 1km
flyover travelator, and certain
tourists are now eligible for visas
on arrival at Mumbai, New
Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and
Bengaluru airports. Already, an
unofficial competition between
Mumbais T2 and New Delhis
T3 is underway. Here, we tell
you how they compare.

the first Indian state to rope in a major
Bollywood star, Amitabh Bachchan, for
its Khushboo Gujarat Ki campaign.
Mittra says, Post the Bachchan

Other tourism-related agencies have
attempted to at least find their own
Bollywood mascots, if not actively pitch
for film business. Shah Rukh Khan, who
owns IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders,
has appeared in commercials to promote
West Bengal. Maharashtra, after a long
search, found its voice in music composer
Shankar Mahadevan. Tourism Victoria
has contracted Vidya Balan to represent
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
And Etihad Airways has signed on
Katrina Kaif as its spokesperson.
The moral of the story, it seems, is
that nothing sells like Bollywoodat
least when the consumer is Indian.
And for a travel industry struggling
to deal with the impact of the global
economic crisis, roping in Bollywoods
star power seems a surefire method
to get the cash registers ringing.

My modus operandi

I drink a glass or two (okay,

But, of course, thats

onam Kapoor has just finished her daily yoga session; shes now
making plans to watch a performance at Lower Parels Canvas
Laugh Factory comedy club and go out for dinner afterwards.
Ask her what she would like to eat or what her favourite
restaurants are and youve really let the cat out of the bag. I am
an absolute foodie, she squeals. I love eating junk food, and the
stuff you get in Bombay is simply delicious! You must have vada pav when
youre here. I dont want to hear this, her personal trainer mutters, before
dashing out of the room. Kapoor laughs, then lapses into a monologue: I love
street food, fine dining and everything in between. Its great that restaurants
such as Le Cirque are coming to Bombay, but this city already has some
amazing places such as Ellipsis, Two One Two and Hakkasan. And Bombay
has the best seafood in the countryfish, lobster and crab. I love beef, but Im
obsessed with crab. Kapoor prides herself on knowing the sort of restaurants
that only locals frequent. Although Im a huge fan of Anthony Bourdain, I was
disappointed with his Bombay episode. I would have been a better guide.
After listening to her list of Mumbai recommendations, I cant help but agree.

I used to work as an art assistant for
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, says Kapoor.
I went to all kinds of places across the
city to source for his filmsfrom the
Oshiwara old furniture market, and the
lane in Crawford Market where they sell
lace, to Zaveri Bazaar where you get
amazing ornaments. As a result, Ive
come to know this city and its culinary
treats really well. I used to love going to
Mohammed Ali Road, especially during
Ramzan, and hogging on everything
from kebabs to kaleeja. Unfortunately,
the price of stardom has meant that
Kapoor cant venture into those
parts anymore. I hate it, she says,

Noor Mohammadi
As Indians, we are used to eating the
brain, liver, kidneys, legs, hoof and
intestines. And, in the Mohammed Ali
Road area, youll find restaurants that
serve dishes made from all these,
reveals Kapoor. Noor Mohammadi,
right on the main thoroughfare, is one
of the best. Try their nalli nihari and
tangdi kebab, washed down with a
scoop of dal ghee. This is not a meal for
the weak-hearted. (022 2345 6008)
Mani Dosa
Kapoor lists this tiny stall as an
essential Mumbai experience.
Standing on the street or sitting in their
cars, residents of Khar tear into Manis
home-style (fluffy or crispwhichever
youd prefer) dosas and slurp down
bowls of spicy sambar and coconut
chutney. (16th Road, Khar West)
Gajalee
Brijwasi Sweets
This traditional halwais shop, right
beside the ancient Babulnath Temple
and just off Marine Drive, makes and
sells lactose sweetmeats. Kapoor picks
this place for the best masala milk
youll taste in your life. Every time Im
in this part of the city, I try and pick up
a glass of it, she says. (022 2367 3221)
Bachelorrs
With a caricature of a chef peeping
over its name on the logo, this snackhouse on Girgaum Chowpatty takes
its softies more seriously than its food.
Bachelorrs serves several unique ice
creams and frozen yoghurts in flavours
such as ginger, orange blossom and
kiwi. (022 2368 2211)

When Dhanush came to Bombay
and was really craving South Indian
cooking, I took him here; he said it was
the closest he had eaten in the city to
what he has back home. Kapoor cites
her Raanjhanaa co-stars endorsement
to put this Matunga Tamil joint on the
list. Its a no-frills place, with the focus
on delivering high-quality South Indian
fast fooddosas, idlis, uttapams and
more. Besides Kapoor and Dhanush,
the owners count Shah Rukh Khan,
Deepika Padukone, Sridevi and Kajol

Cafe Zoe
I love their breakfast and the

of this place. Housed in a renovated

windows. The menu serves comfort
179
Hakkasan Mumbai
The Mumbai outpost of this international
Asian food stalwart serves many of the
dishes that have made it a hit elsewhere
in the world, along with an extensive list
of vegetarian options. They have a really
good wine menu, says Kapoor. Since Im
very partial to wine, I love dining here. Her
favourite dishes include the crispy-duck
salad with pomelo, pine nuts and shallots,
fried quail and the soft-shell crab flavoured
with almonds, chilli and curry leaves.
(http://hakkasan.com; 022 2644 4444)
The Pantry
With its whitewashed walls lined with
bric-a-brac, vintage metal chairs and lace
curtains, this South Mumbai restaurant
in the historic Kala Ghoda area spells
Parisian chic. While sipping her second cup
of mushroom soup, Kapoor exclaims, I
picked this place to shoot because it is nice
and intimate. The quiche is good and the
breakfast is excellent. (022 2270 0082)
Pali Bhavan
For those looking for an Indian fine-dining
restaurant, Kapoor picks this Bandra
establishment. Its decorated in dark tones,
muted lighting, plenty of old, fading images,
mounted deer heads, porcelain plates and
other quirky decorations sourced from local
markets such as Chor Bazaar. The food is
great and I love the way the place is done up,
she says. (022 2651 9400)
Ellipsis
Kapoor picks this place, which serves
American and European cuisine, for
preparing some of the best food shes
had in recent times. The chef there
made me pork burgers that make me
hungry every time I think of them, she
exclaims. (022 6621 3333)
THE DECADENT
DESSERT SCENE
For sweet endings to your Mumbai
culinary adventure, Kapoor suggests
you visit the following.
The Table
This is probably the only restaurant
in Mumbai that sources seasonal
vegetables from its own farm in Alibaug.
It also works with a local urban-farming
initiative to source organic produce for
its kitchen. Kapoor says of the food: I love
beef and you normally dont get good beef
burgers in Bombay. But the big, fat burger
at The Table is simply outstanding. Its by
far the best in the city. (www.thetable.in;
022 2282 5001)
Cheval
The name is French for horse (a nod to
its location, Kala Ghoda) and the cuisine
is European, with dishes such as wood-fired
pizzas, souffls and tiramisu. Explaining
why this is on her hotlist, Kapoor says, The
place has a great vibe and everybody goes
there for a good time. (022 4039 6638)

Le15 Ptisserie
The brainchild of Le Cordon Bleu-trained
ptissier, Pooja Dhingra, this brand has
outlets in Lower Parel and Bandra. It sells
cakes, macaroons and tarts, which can
also be delivered to your doorstep. The
cupcakes from here make my day every

This giant installation, inaugurated in 2009,

omething about the end of a year and the start of a new one
gets me thinking about the places Ive been toand all the
places still remaining on my bucket list. How did we come up
with this list of 25 amazing destinations to visit? We simply did an
informal poll. Its certainly telling what sort of holiday appeals to
a personI would, personally, be delighted to watch the Super Bowl
in New York but I doubt I would sign up to dive in the MS Zenobia
shipwreck off the coast of Larnaca in Cyprus (my colleagues, on
the other hand, are plotting to do so, as I write). And when I had the
chance to go to Brazil earlier this year, I chose to visit Rio de Janeiro
and the Amazon and skip So Pauloa decision that now fills me
with dismay. Travellers regret is a dreadful condition, and I seem to live with it permanently.
(How could I have left Geneva without trying a gruyre-stuffed paratha? Why did Anish Kapoors
public installation open in Chicago after Id already left? Why did Orhan Pamuk open his
museum just a year after I had holidayed in Istanbul?)
Of course, I counted how many of the 25 places listed here Ive already visited (as will you, no
doubt), and my answer is 13a number so slight that I have vowed to rectify this immediately.
Suddenly, reading about Dsseldorfs cutting-edge art scene and Belgrades mix of old and new
have placed both cities firmly on my to-do list. The world is large and there are many more than
25 places to visitbut heres a taste of where we are thinking about. Safe travels, and write us
a postcard. Remember, theres no greater travellers regret than staying put and going nowhere.

translates as place of light.
Once a dilapidated, derelict area
of town avoided even by locals, its

Situated on the southern coast

It is said that Saint Lazarus

raised him from the dead. The
Church of Saint Lazarus (www.

17th century and is now Larnacas
best-known monument and
Cyprus most important surviving
Byzantine structure.
Hala Sultan Tekke (www.

of Umm Haram, is situated in
a beautiful garden on the banks
of the Salt Lake and is well worth
a visit. There are many other
historical sights, of course, but
there are also exciting shipwrecks
and marine life to discover. The
Zenobia sank just off the coast
of Larnaca back in 1980, on its
maiden voyage from Sweden
to Syriatoday it makes for
a fantastic underwater expedition.

The book-lovers journey
After writing the epic Ulysses, set on the
streets of Dublin, author James Joyce is
said to have remarked: I always write
about Dublin, because if I can get to the
heart of Dublin, I can get to the heart of
all the cities of the world.
Even today, lovers of literature delight
in this Irish city, where books and
authors are revered and respected.
A bibliophiles tour must start with
a look at the Book of Kells (www.tcd.

is illuminated and stored in Trinity
Colleges Old Library. The cavernous
space houses an impressive
collection of two lakh old books
as well as 48 marble busts of famous
philosophers and writers, including
Jonathan Swift.
Joyce fans must also visit the
Martello tower, which appeared in
the first chapter of Ulysses and is now
a museum of old photographs and
letters of the author. Bookshops across

Few cities abound with the sort

Moscow does. The most famous
shopping destination for kitschy

traditional woollen items such as

replicas of Faberg eggs, old watches,
balalaikas and other musical
instruments. Reproductions of Soviet
memorabilia are most popular with
tourists. If you like your souvenirs
less touristy, stay away.
Head instead to Eliseevsky (www.
