Stage 1 Religion Studies

Assessment Type: Issues Investigation Report

Asylum Seekers in Australia
Description of Assessment:
Students will investigate through research, surveys, media and personal insights
the ethical issue of Asylum Seekers in Australian communities. In a report,
students are to clarify the religious beliefs relevant to this issue, explain the
importance of these beliefs and whether they are being challenged by
sociological influences, propose possible outcomes from the current situation if
nothing changes, and speculate possible changes and the resulting impact of
such changes.
Format:
1. On a map of the world, highlight the countries where Asylum Seekers
come from. In another colour, highlight the countries where they are
fleeing to.
2. From the list of words provided, highlight the words that you think
describe how Asylum Seekers feel. For five of the words, write a sentence
beginning with If I were an Asylum Seeker, I would feel *insert word here*
because
3. Make a list of things an Asylum Seeker might need when they arrive in
Australia. Think about what they might have with them when leaving their
homes and what they would have left behind. (Consider basics like
clothing and food, housing, jobs, education, learning to speak English).
4. Design a poster welcoming Asylum Seekers to our Whyalla community.
Make sure to make it appealing and advertise the best parts of Whyalla.
Consider what information they might need to know eg: where is the local
supermarket? What schools are in the area? The name of a doctor.
