Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot high fuel rail pressure or use this procedure if the following
event code is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for information about event codes and the
default trip points for these codes. You must access the monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic
Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes.

follow these inspection, maintenance and service instructions may cause

personal injury or death.

Do not loosen any high pressure fuel lines when the engine is running.
The high pressure in the fuel lines can cause personal injury or death.
Wait 60 seconds after the engine has stopped to allow pressure to purge
before any service or repair is performed on the engine fuel lines.

Diagnostic Codes and Event Codes

Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector. Check for active diagnostic codes and event codes.
Look for active diagnostic codes that are related to the high pressure fuel system. Use the appropriate
circuit test to troubleshoot any active codes before continuing.

High Pressure Relief Valve

A failed high pressure relief valve will prevent the release of excess fuel back to the pump. Refer to the
Systems Operation/Testing And Adjusting manual. If a faulty high pressure relief valve is suspected,
replace the valve. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly manual.

Fuel Return Line

Check the fuel return line for the following problems: restrictions, collapsed lines and pinched lines.
If problems are found with the fuel return line, repair the line and/or replace the line. Refer to the
Disassembly and Assembly manual.
