INTRODUction
There are many events of antiquity that deserve to be explored. One of those is the first great uprising
in Sardinia. Not so much for the outcome (the defeat of the Sardinian-Punic, Carthaginian, and Iliese
coalition by the Romans led by Titus Manlius Torquatus), but for the fact that this event represented, at
the very least, the first sign of recovery by the Romans after Hannibals climatic victory at Cannae. By
regaining possession of Sardinia, the Romans were better able to control the western Mediterranean,
and able to gain access to Sardinian wheat, which was used to feed their growing armies. One similarity
between Hannibal and Ampsicora was that after their defeats, their cities of originCarthage and
Cornus, respectively, were razed by the Romans. I hope this brief description stimulates your curiosity,
and encourages you to further explore the events surrounding the battle that we are going to recreate.

armies

Unlike typical games that utilize specific point values for the armies, this scenario uses fixed armies and
deployment. The armies are balanced so as to give both sides a reasonable chance of victory. In order to
add color to the battle, the scenario includes the characters Hostus, Hanno, Hasdrubal the Bald, Mago,
Ennius, and Titus Manlius Torquatus. Although the involvement of some of the characters in the battle is
speculative, their inclusion is inspired by documented events.

THE BATTLE SCENARIO

Specific terrain elements: place two elements of woods in the outer North West quadrant, and one
element in the outer South East quadrant.
Preparation
Set up the battlefield. Deploy the armies as indicated below.
Description
Titus Manlius Torquatus was informed that the Carthaginians had landed in Sardinia. After defeating Hostus,
Manlius immediately directed his attention to the insurgents who were seeking to avenge their comrades who fell in
the previous clash.
The main objective: Rout the opposing army.
Table Size: 120 x 180 cm
Game Length: 10 turns
Deployment:
The units are deployed as indicated on the map below.

Victory Points at the end of 10 turns

10 points
5 points
10 points
5 points

if the enemy Army reaches its Breakpoint but yours does not.
if both Armies reach their Breakpoint.
if you eliminate the enemys Command Unit and dont lose your own.
if both Command Units are eliminated.

The Roman Player

25 points for having eliminated all of the characters of the coalition (primary objective).
5 points for having eliminated Hanno (secondary objective).
5 points for having eliminated Hostus (secondary objective).
5 points for having eliminated Mago (secondary objective).
The Sardinian-Punic Player
25 points for having eliminated Ennius (primary objective).
10 points if Ennius unit has not been eliminated, but has sustained at least 3 losses; or
5 points if instead, Ennius unit has not been eliminated, but has sustained 1 or 2 losses
(secondary objective).
Add up all the points: the player with the most is the winner. If its a draw then add all the Resistance
Values of the enemy units that were actually eliminated (and not those that ran away after a Rout Test or
that were eliminated after a Scatter Test) and the Resistance Value of your own surviving units to see who
has won.
If the Roman Army routs (the Army has either lost its Command Unit and reached its Breakpoint; or has
reached double its Breakpoint), the Sardinian-Punic player will only receive the 25 points relating to the
primary objective if Ennius was actually eliminated (i.e., not eliminated as a result of the Rout, or as a
result of his unit failing a Rout Test or a Scatter Test); alternatively, if Ennius unit has sustained at least three
Losses, but is still on the field, the Sardinian-Punic player will receive 15 points; or if instead, Ennius unit
has sustained one or two Losses but is still on the field, the Sardinian-Punic player will receive 10 points
(secondary objective). If Ennius unit has sustained no Losses, the Sardinian-Punic player does not
receive any points for the primary or secondary objectives.
If the Sardinian-Punic Army routs (the Army has either lost its Command Unit and reached its Breakpoint; or
has reached double its Breakpoint), The Roman player will receive the 25 points relating to the primary
objective only if ALL characters were actually eliminated (not eliminated as a result of the Rout, or as a
result of the unit failing a Rout Test or a Scatter Test). If only some of the characters have been eliminated,
the Roman player will receive the respective points indicated above (the secondary objective is not
cumulative with the primary objective).
If both sides Rout (both Armies have lost their Command Unit and reached their Breakpoint; or have
reached double their Breakpoint) then both get 20 points (and NO Points for any objectives).

HASDRUBAL THE BALD 215 A.C.
Comprising:
Hasdrubal the Bald with the Sacred Band of Cavalry, Hanno and the Sacred Band of Infantry in a Compact group, 2 Libyan-Phoenician
Spearman in a Compact group, 1 Adyrmachidae Warriors, 2 Iberian Infantry in a Compact group, 2 Sardinian-Punic and Iliese Infantry
in a Compact group, Ampsicora with Pelliti Warriors, Hostus with Sardinian Warriors, 2 Pelliti Warriors, 1 Phoenician Archers,
2 Sardinian Archers, 2 Balearic Slingers, Mago with Libyan-Phoenician Cavalry, 1 Edetana Cavalry, 1 Sardinian-Punic Cavalry, 1
Numidian Light Cavalry, 1 Gaetuli Light Cavalry, 2 Elephants
Army Characteristics:
The Sacred Band of Infantry and Libyan-Phoenician Spearman cannot Change Facing by 90 but are allowed to change by 180. Neither may
choose to Pull back or Move sideways.
No unit, except for Skirmishers, can move through the unit of Sacred Band of Infantry or a unit of Libyan-Phoenician Spearman.
Iberian Infantry, although classified as Medium Infantry, is not disordered when crossing woods or broken ground.
If Hostus unit is eliminated as a result of melee or missile fire, Ampsicoras unit is also removed from the battlefield. The removal Ampsicoras
unit does not trigger a Scatter Test, and is not included in the calculation of Resistance Values lost, but does cause a Rout of the army if the army
reaches its Breakpoint.
Mallet: if an elephant fails the Elephant Trainer Test, and the unit has the characteristic Mallet, the elephant can be brought down on the spot,
before stampeding (the unit is eliminated). Elephants eliminated in this manner COUNT toward the application of the Rout Test.
Dual Command: a unit that is positioned inside the range of both Command Units can benefit from the respective bonuses of both Command
Units (e.g., the unit can obtain a re-roll from the first Command Unit and a second re-roll from the second Command Unit); however, when applying
a Command Units TV, only use the higher TV value of the two Command Units. The Scatter Test is not applied until the second Command is lost, but
the loss of only one Command is sufficient to trigger a Rout once the Army reaches its Breakpoint. When the second Command is eliminated, you
must perform two Scatter Tests for each unit.

POINT-VALUE ARMIES
If you enjoyed this scenario and want to use these armies in normal point-value games, you can use the
following lists which have been arranged like typical Centuria army lists. The lists contain the familiar
minimum and maximum values relating to army composition, but the selection of variants has been
greatly reduced. Unique features in these lists allow you to be competitive when playing the standard
scenarios.

CENTURIA
CENTURIA is a wargame for two players or more that lets
you simulate battles set in the Ancient Period.
The game uses our well-known Action/Reaction mechanism but now
includes exciting new rules to better simulate the dynamics of these
battles and will allow you make many strategic and tactical
decisions that will help you on your way to victory.
Closing ranks at the right time, charging the enemy when hes disordered
and making the most of his hesitation to break his lines, these are just some
of the new ways of fighting that youll find in these pages.
The system allows you to play with any scale of miniature
and keeps the base sizes fixed while just changing the number
of miniatures that are on them.
As well as a points system to help you balance your games, each unit also
has a Training Value, a value that shows its prowess in Melee, an Armour
Value and a number of losses that it can take.
The rules also contain three classic scenarios, Vanguard, Ambush and
