Objectives

On completion of this subject, the student should be able to


understand:
state the positive and negative impacts of information
technology on the society;
discuss ethical values of the IT professionals; and
evaluate the changes that occur in the society as a result
of IT revolution.

Course Description

This subject will cover the social issues related to society,


issues on history, development and economics of IT will be
covered. The issues that will be discussed include, the effects
of the IT application on the society, the changing nature of
work, the ethical issues and computer crime. The issues
covered are relevant to being a responsible computer user,
professional or personal.

ASSESSMENT
1. Continuous Assessment: 60%
a) IT and Society Portfolio/ Paper Review: 20%
Each student is expected to prepare an IT and society portfolio. Each week
you will write a short review on the current issues of IT.
b) Participation: 10%
Every student has to participate in discussion and presentation.
c) Research Project: 30%
Student work in a group of 4 5 members. Select a topic and write a
seminar paper then present the research findings at the end of the
semester. The evaluation is based on:
i) Report - 20% content
ii) Presentation - 10% presentation & participation
2. Final Examination: 40%
The final examination will be a two (3) hours paper that you will sit at the end of the
semester.
