CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION
Historical background of Library
The term Library originated from the Latin word Libra which
means books. As early as 1374 Oxford English Dictionary defines
Library as a place where books are kept for reading, studying and
reference.
Today it has been defined as a public institution or establishment
charged with the care of a collection of books and the duty of redering
the books accessible to those who require to use them.
conventional with this old definition. However, in view of its
present role in the educational development process has been regarded
as the heart of an institution, never centre of an organizations, mind of
the society, repository of Human mind, depository of human civilization
and culture and the sustainer of the intellectual activity then anticipates

the future . A modern Library, therefore, is changed to have latest froms

of library service, the newest from of educational media and the most
advanced means of storing & retrieving information as defined by the
encyclopedia.
History of Library
The story of Library is as old as human civilization. Before the
birth of a civil society, man lived in the state of nature. Hobbes-a British
Political thinker described the human life in the state of nature as
solitary, Nasty, Poor, Brutish, and short. Fifth and fourth centuries B.C
the Theosophists described that in the state of nature justice was the right
of the stronger. that is man was simple hunter and gathered of fruits and
roots of plants for his survival. later fro hunter, harvester, gathered and
pastoral nomadic stage he moved to horticultural and the settled
agricultural stage. he tamed animals and used them in farming. their
population grew, nomadic tribal settlements changed into towns and
towns developed into cities where economic, trade and commerce,
social, cultural, religious and governmental institution were developed.

all this happened after the end of the Neolithic Age and this change took
thousands of years. Man had used various means of communicating his
ideas, his beliefs, his faith, his ethos and pathos with is fellow beings. he
communicated by gestures, facial expressions, grunts and cries, by
touch, signs and symbols-ideograms, pictures-pictograms, music and
dance.
it is always relative to the knower. it is built collectively and is
used collectively by human mind. Library has been the chief conserve of
knowledge and ideas of man. it is a vital link in the chain of mans
communication. but, above all, a library is human enterprise and that it
depends ultimately upon the skilled minds and talents of librarians, if it
is to perform its proper role in our changing society. Dr. Pierce Bulter of
Chicago University (1993) said that basic elements of Librarianship
consist in accumulation of knowledge by society and its continuous
transmission to the living generation so far as these process are
performed through the instrumentality of graphic record and that the
fundamental phenomenon of librarianship is the transmission of

accumulated experience of society to its individual members through the

instrumentality of books. According to Dr. Carlwhite the modern
librarianship is concerned with assuring the continence with assuring the
continence and full use of the power to retain, organize and use the
accumulated heritage of all generations of all mankind in all its formsthe written worked being only one. in view of above explanation, it will
be appropriate to trace the history of Library since the origin of human
polity and it will be, further more easier for the readers to understand the
role of library in society in the past in the following discussions.
Greek Civilization
Second millenniu B.C. Crete became the centre of civilization
which later spread to the mainland of Freece. Greeks obtained alphabets
from the Phoenicians. Fifteenth century B.C. they developed the art of
writing from pictographic form to cursive form and by 8 th century BC
they adopted22 alphabets of Phoenicians. By 6th and 5th century BC there
were good Libraries which were established by the rulers in Greece.
Plato himself was liberation and formed a library at Syracuse. Aristotle

(384-322 B.C.) is said to have been the first person who collected,
preserved and used the culture of the past. His library reached in the
hands of a Roman king sulla when he captured Athens in 86 B.C. The
first public library was established in Athens in 330 BC. The greatest
Library was a Alexandria was Alexandria during 4 th and 3rd century BC.
It had 7,00,000 papyrus rolls. Alexandria was named after Alexnder the
Greater Another Library in the Temple of Serapis in Alexandria had a
collection of about 1b Lakh rolls.
China
Chinese had also developed their system of writing which
comprised of pictograms and ideograms. They made paper fro rags
wood pulp and flax in 2nd century Ad. they had the knowledge of
printing. Chinese produced literature and developed libraries.
Indian Civilizations
India had great and glorious past right from antiquity of Dravadian
civilization in Sing (Indus) Valley. Excavations of Mohanjodaro and

Harrapa in Indus valley reveal that India had well developed civilization
5000 years ago. The Aryans-most intelligent and civilized race,
conquered Indus valley and spread into Indo-Gangetic planes during
2000 BC. They established their political hegemony in as many as
sixteen states in Northern India. Their education was through oral
discourses. Great works in the fields of religion, philosophy basic
literature, medicine and science were developed. Vedas, Brahmanas,
Arnayakas and Upanishads were produced and memorized. Great school
of learning and universities were established which had big libraries at
Nalanda, Magadh, Taxila, Vikramshila which contained works on
philosophy, literature, drama, art, science and mathematics. 700 BC to
500 A.D. there were great scholars and thinkers like Dhanwantri,
Nagarjun, Charak, Sushrut, Aryabhat, Varahmjira, Patanjali, Vyasa,
Gutam, Mahavira, Budha and so on.
Middle Ages
in the early middle ages constatine the great became the emperor
of Roman Empire in 324 AD. He established imperial Library in

Constantinople, which later on by 6th century AD was enriched by his

successors. it had 1,20,000 volumes- the largest5 collection in Europe. in
the later middle ages, during 14th and 15th century, the movement of
Renaissance brought about a change in the outlook on life of European
society. the light of logic, reasoning and scientific thinking prevailed.
they were influenced by great Philoshophy and science. libraries along
with universities were born in almost every city of Europe and contained
huge collection of manuscripts and classics, namely in ltaly, san macro
medicine library, and Laurentian Library in Florentine
Modern Age
Library Legislation in Europe brught almost a library movement
which resulted in the flowering of public libraries at all levels in
European and other countries. france and germany also developed
national libraries since 15th century. Indian has national library at
caluctta which holds about 22 lakh publications. these libraries had been
serving the people at large of their respective countries and people
around the world.

1.2 Role of acadmic library in society.

our society is undergoing a process of rapid change, moving
toward what is called the information society, the knowledge society ,
the network society or the information mode of development (castells,
1996; inglis et al, 2002: 17) refer to the following features of the current
period: dynamic and continuous change and transformation; the failure
of great theories such as Marxism 6to locate and predict directions of
change; the juxtaposition of various images of social, economic and
political life and the transformation of images like Disney world, tv
sport and web pages into the realities with which we deal. ith is belived
that information and knowledge are distinguishing features of this
modern society and the main driver of this change is the growing use of
information and communication technologies assumptions.
1.3 the role of the academic library in university education
the role of university libraries in India has been modeled on examples
offered by developed countries model of academic libraries as a costeffective information service and provider of knowledge product to a

resident community of scholars. over the last two decades, there has
been a gradual erosion of traditional stakeholders positive perceptions
based on collections. furthermore, Indian universities have tended to
develop a culture of relying on donations of library materials regardless
of the appropriateness of content to needs of recipients or curricula. this
emerging role has oblighations, which have been analyzed in this paper.
1.4 Impact of Information Technology on the Library.
the term Information Technology (IT) has been variously defined.
Marshall (1984) defined it as the coming together of computing and
telecommunications for the purpose of handling information: the
application of technologies to information handling; including
generation , storage, processing, retrieval and dissemination. it is also
concerned with the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of
information-textual, numerical, pictorial and vocal. it is a broad-based
term comprising the gathering (acquisition), organization (packaging),
storage and retrieval (dissemination) of information that can be in
textual or numerical (books documents), pictorial and vocal forms

(audio-visual) or a combination of computer and telecommunications

devices. emuakpor (2012) defines it as all forms of technology applied
to the processing, storing and transmitting information in electronic
from; stressing that the physical equipment used for this purpose include
computers, communication equipment and network; fax machines and
electronic, pocket calculator.

CHAPTER-II

Chapter-2
2.1 Statement of the problem
it has been observed that the application of modern information
technologies to academic libraries activities and services in DIT
University library seems inadequate probably due to a variety of factors,
including human factors, fear, and the state of infrastructural
development of the country. Not a few library practitioners also believe
that there is hardly much benefits that can be derived from the use of IT
applications there by giving preferences fro the manual library
operations. those who are aware of its benefits are afraid of being
eliminated from their jobs; though knowing that its application to library
routines

such

as

administration,

acquisitions,

cataloguing

and

classification, circulation, information retrieval and serials control would

facilitate effective and deficient job performance. this study herefore
investigates the availability of it facilities at the DIT university library.
Hence, the study is focused essentially on the DIT university library.

2.2 Objective of the study

the purpose of this project work were to explore the activities and
services in DIT University Library and to propose the suitable guidelines
to enhance library IT Technology.
The objectives of the study are:
To identify and study the various digital infrastructure facilities
made available to the users of information in DIT University,
To analyse and understand the objectives, programmes and
services of the library consoutium and the professional
organizations actively involved in getting access to digital sources
of information.
To assess the impact and the extent of the use of digital sources by
the users and also their dependency on alternative service
suppliers.
To understand the reasons for inadequate digital facilities and nonpromotion of technology based services.
to trace the inadequacies and the extent of user orientation and
training for efficient and effective skills in ; (a) organizing digital
facilities and service, and (b) accessing digital sources.

To arrive at the extent of the use of digital source and their

importance, and also to know whether they supplement the
conventional library materials ie., printed books and audio visua;
resources.
2.3 Hypotheses
since the recent past, information is being published in digital
format, comprising CD-ROM databases and web sites. this
trend is becoming increasingly common and popular as well.
there is felt need for the academicians and researchers of
university to gradually be familiar with the use of digital
technology.
the information users and the facilitators in the academic
library system are of the opinion from long experience and
involvement that the access to digital sources is possible ,
anytime and anywhere. the cost involved in the process,
including the subscription to primary sources is comparatively
ecomomical.

for academic and research Endeavour, people have started

accessing digital media and are gradually becoming familiar
with the know-how of digital technology. Now, it is up to the
management to provide suitable infrastructure facilities and
encouragement.
Digital information media do not eliminate or dominate or
diminish the importance of printed source. Printed books
continue to grow and there will be constant demand. However,
people relay on internet resources for certain kind of current
information as supplementary data and facts.
Vast amount of information is at the disposal of any user who
has the interne facility. He is free to access anytime, anywhere
and get the information at the desktop which is not so in the
case of printed sources.
Academic institutions are facing serious financial crunch and
are unable to renew the subscription to foreign journals in
adequate number. Over the past two decades, the list of journals
has been subjected to constant pruning and as such, the active
faculty and research scholars are made to learn and depend

more on web resources. there is high demand for subscription

to core journals, on-line in full text with technical band width
and based line internet connectivity.

CHAPTER-III

Chapter-3
Research is a regular affair. A number of institutions, organizations
and individuals are bringing out similar studies. Referring to them may

be useful in many ways. A literature review is actually an attempt to

identify, locate and synthesize completed research reports, articles,
books and other materials relevant to the specific problems of a research
topic. if new studies undertaken and if material is not available, the
research need not pointer over precious studies.
The review of literature in scientific research is very essential. its
purpose is to avoid any duplication in research work. the research
project must undertaken be a unique problem on which research work
has not been done in the past by any other person at any other place.
Researches, therefore, go fore, serious and comprehensive scanning on
duplication check project from various printed sources of information in
libraries. the print literature available a various types. the research
findings are published in journals, research bulletins, and thesis and
conference papers.
Since the research information published primary documents is
enormous and flowing out with a high speed, it is not always possible to
check all of them. hence, various agencies are engaged in packaging the

primary information in the form of secondary sources of information.

thus bibliographic control is brought in the from of bibliographies,
indexes abstracting, journals. by a through scanning of such
bibliographic tools a researcher can ensure that his research problem or
can vendor some unique and useful results.
the topic of the present project is a study of computerized

CHAPTER-IV

Chapter-4
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The present study is entitled: A study of computerized
information systems & services in the Library of DIT university,
Dehradun.
Research in general refers to a search for knowledge. one can
also define research as a scientific and systematic search for
pertinent information on a specific topic. Research is an art of
scientific investigation. the advanced learners Dictionary of

current English lays down the meaning of research as A careful

investigation or inquiry specially through search for new facts in
any branch to gain new knowledge. some people consider
research as a movement , a voyage of discovery.
Research is an academic activity and as such the term should
be used in a technical sense. According to Clifford woody research
comprises

defining

and

redefining

problems,

formulating

hypothesis or suggested solution; collecting organizing and

evaluating data; marking deductions and reaching conclusion; and
at last carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they
fit the formulating hypothesis. D. slesinger and M. Stephenson in
the Encyclopedia of Social science define research as the
manipulation of things, concepts, or symbols for the purpose of
generalizing to extend, correct or verify knowledge, whether that
knowledge aids in construction of theory or in the practic4e of an
art. it is a deliberate effort to collect information, to sift it, to
analyze it, to put it together and to evaluate it. it works with a high
degree of organization on a rather well defined problem pursues it

hopefully to a successful conclusion. it is a careful search for

solutions to the problems that plague and puzzle mankind.
in other words, it would be stated the qualities of a good research
are as under:
1. Good Research is systematic: it means that research is
structured with specified steps to the taken is a specified
sequence in accordance with the well defined set of rules.
Systematic characteristics of the research do not rule out
creative thinking but it certainly does reject the use of guessing
and intuition in arriving at conclusion.
2. Good research is logical: this implies that research is guided by
the rules of logical reasoning and the logical process of
induction and deduction are of great value in carrying out
research. Induction is the process of reason from some premise
to a conclusion which follows from that very premise. Infect,
logical reasoning makes research more meaningful in the
context of decision making.
4.4 Research Problem

According to kerlinger, a problem is an interrogative sentence or

statement that asks what relation exists between two or more variables?
The answer to the questions will provide what is having sought in the
research.
A research worked should identify some aspect of the topic
which can be formulated into specific research questions which are to be
investigated with the resources available. probably questions to be
answered are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

It the problem relevant and important?

Does the subject area suit to his interest?
Does it contain originality and creativeness?
Does the problem require extension of Knowledge?
Is the problem feasible with respect to time and date required in its

solution?
6. Is the study reveal some new idea?
7. Is the study practically fulfill the objective?
8. Is the Problem of investigation is too narrow, or too broad?
while framing a problem, the following criteria may e kept in
mind:
Any problem not of significance to the nation is definitely not
worth consideration of the investigator. A research problem can be
sponsored by an agency and can also be invented by the

investigator himself. it is helpful for the investigator to keep in

mind the following aspects while selecting the area of problem for
research.
(1) The problem to be chosen should be such so as to be
(2)

meaningfully related to the interest of the investigator himself.

The problem having alliance with the chain of thinking of

(3)

research already in existence can be handled more confidently.

The ambitious problems covering a wide range of area of
interest should be avoided and the problems of manageable size

(4)

and limits should be taken up.

An important consideration for selecting the problem area
related to its feasibility in terms of the application of scientific
techniques, availability of resources in terms of money, personal
and equipments.
When the researcher considers the points mentioned above, he

is essentially trying to answer some such questions as:

a) Is the problem researchable?
b) Is it interesting?
c) Is it allied with the chain if thinking or research already in
existence?
d) Is the problem of manageable size?
e) Is it a new problem or the work on the problem has already been
done?

f) Whether the topic selected is within the feasibility of techniques,

time, money and resources at the disposal of the research worked?
4.2 Scope of the study:
` To study the library services and library computerization that is the
impact of library computerization on its services. to study the
problem and to get the useful results the researcher of the present
study has chosen DIT university library and a study will be made with
special reference to its various conventional and electronic services &
effect made on the services by the automation of the library.
4.3 Research Design, Population & Sampling
The word design means to prepare a preliminary sketch or the
plan for work to be executed and research design means a plan of
action to be carried out in connection with a research project. It is
however, not an unbreakable rule, nor a hard-and-strategy. On the
contrary, it is only a guideline for the researcher to enable him to keep
track of his actions and to know that he is moving in the right

direction in order to achieve his goal. The design may be a specific

presentation of the various steps in the processes of research. These
steps include the selection of a research problem, the presentation of
the problem, the formulation of the hypothesis, conceptual clarity,
methodology, data collection, survey of literature and documentation,
the testing of the hypothesis, interpretation, bibliography, presentation
and report writing.
Sampling refers to the investigations of a part of the whole
population or universe. A sampling procedure is a technique of
selecting a sample from given population. a statistical sample,
according to Calvin, is a miniature picture or cross-section of the
entire group or aggregate from which the sample is taken. The entire
group from which a sample is chosen is known as the population,
universe, of supply. In short, sample represents the whole
population and by observing the sample, certain inferences may be
made about the population.

In short sample represents the whole population and by observing

the sample, certain inferences may be made about the population.
The term population, is not necessarily synonymous with a
population of people. It is used to denote individual or things or
events or documents or observations. Our expectation in studying the
sample is that what we find out about the sample will be true of the
population as a whole.
To study the problem undertaken, two Questionnaires have been
designed for collecting information objectively under various heads.
In all ten question have been asked for collecting the data. The users
are asked about.

the main objective of the present study is to find out the impact of
library Automation /computerization on the service of the library, on the
use of library by its clientele and the improvement made for the better
development of GBPUAT library with present resources-physicalliterature and man power. on the basis of the results/findings some useful
suggestions can be made for further improvement of the library.
4.5 Methodology
First of all a simple questionnaire has been designed which
contains 31 questions mostly to be answered in yes or no. All these
question for convenience analysis of the data have been grouped under
nine major heads namely.
CHEPTER-5
STATISTICAL TREATMENT INTERPRETATION
AND CONCLUSION
The success of a library to great and effective activities. it is also
essential to find out the reason for its inefficiency activities, if any, so as

to rectify the same. as part of his official duties the librarian makes his
descriptive details and mass of information have to be reduced into facts
and figures comparison of activities with those of the previous years and
also with those of other libraries can be effectively done with the help of
library statistics. for the valuation, measurement and control of services
and output of work, statistics are necessary. statistics are tabulated
figures on facts in figures. in statistics, descriptive fiures are reduced to
figures statistics is a branch of mathematical science which deals with
the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of a mass of
numerical data. the term librametry was coined by Ranganathan in
1948 to denote the application of statistical calculators to library
operations.

CHAPTER VI
IMPLICATIONS, LIMITATIONS & SUGGESTIONS

Research is based on the application of known theories and models

to the actual operational field or population. the research is conducted to
test the empirical content or the basic assumptios or the very validity of
a theory under given conditions. for example, lewiss growth model for
labor surplus economics assumes that real wage rate of labor shall
remain constant till the surplus labor is completely wiped out; it may be
of interest to a researcher to investigate if it so happens in every labour
surplus economy. in case of a theory or model not holding good , the
researchers interest may further be stimulated to know why a given
model does not apply and what modifications would be required to make
the model operational in that situation. it may also form a basis for
developing an alternative strategy.
Research often takes the from of a field investigation and aims at
collecting the basic data for verifying the applicability of existing
theories and models in given situation. naturally, therefore, the adequacy
and accuracy of data will have considerable impact on the application of
the model and reliability of the result . not only should his data be

reliable he must also be objective, scientific and sharp in identifying the

field of application for a given theory. like Pure research, the present
research would also contribute to the developments in the following
manners.

it is in a contributing new facts

it can put theory to test
it may aid in conceptual classification
it may integrate theory of previous study .studies

limitations
some pople argue that scientific method is more applicable to
physical or exact sciences and it cannot be applied to social sciences
which deal with human behavior. those holding this opinion point out
the following difficulties in use of scientific method.
1. human behavior is complicated, subtle and varied. therefore, it is
very difficult to categories human vehavior.
2. when human behavior is studied and analyzed by other human
beings, the personal characteristics of such human beings come in
to the picture and distort the analytical facts.

3. different aspects of human behavior are psychological in nature,

and as such, do not admit of measurement.
Suggestions
on the basis of the questionnaire based survey report for further
improvement and strengthening of computer based electronic services
and conventional library services the following suggestions are made.
1- DIT university library, being well stock library and also a model
for other libraries in the Dehradun must subscribe to a minimum of
core journals for meeting the information needs of all library users
of DIT university as well as visitors from other institutions.
2- to support the regular subscription and avoid to cut made in the
subscription list frequently, library must get a minimum of rupees
2 crore per annum.. if not 6% of the total budget of DIT university
library as per UGC Norms.
3- the library text book collection is old. it must be updated with new
editons.
4- more CD-Rom databases can be added representing the crore
subjects.

5- library should also purchase Indian data base like Indian

Petro.com.
6- through the book catalogue has been computerized still the bound
journals catalogues need to be computerized for quick reference to
journal literature.
