INTRODUCTION
Historical background of Library
The term Library originated from the Latin word Libra which
means books. As early as 1374 Oxford English Dictionary defines
Library as a place where books are kept for reading, studying and
reference.
Today it has been defined as a public institution or establishment
charged with the care of a collection of books and the duty of redering
the books accessible to those who require to use them.
conventional with this old definition. However, in view of its
present role in the educational development process has been regarded
as the heart of an institution, never centre of an organizations, mind of
the society, repository of Human mind, depository of human civilization
and culture and the sustainer of the intellectual activity then anticipates
all this happened after the end of the Neolithic Age and this change took
thousands of years. Man had used various means of communicating his
ideas, his beliefs, his faith, his ethos and pathos with is fellow beings. he
communicated by gestures, facial expressions, grunts and cries, by
touch, signs and symbols-ideograms, pictures-pictograms, music and
dance.
it is always relative to the knower. it is built collectively and is
used collectively by human mind. Library has been the chief conserve of
knowledge and ideas of man. it is a vital link in the chain of mans
communication. but, above all, a library is human enterprise and that it
depends ultimately upon the skilled minds and talents of librarians, if it
is to perform its proper role in our changing society. Dr. Pierce Bulter of
Chicago University (1993) said that basic elements of Librarianship
consist in accumulation of knowledge by society and its continuous
transmission to the living generation so far as these process are
performed through the instrumentality of graphic record and that the
fundamental phenomenon of librarianship is the transmission of
(384-322 B.C.) is said to have been the first person who collected,
preserved and used the culture of the past. His library reached in the
hands of a Roman king sulla when he captured Athens in 86 B.C. The
first public library was established in Athens in 330 BC. The greatest
Library was a Alexandria was Alexandria during 4 th and 3rd century BC.
It had 7,00,000 papyrus rolls. Alexandria was named after Alexnder the
Greater Another Library in the Temple of Serapis in Alexandria had a
collection of about 1b Lakh rolls.
China
Chinese had also developed their system of writing which
comprised of pictograms and ideograms. They made paper fro rags
wood pulp and flax in 2nd century Ad. they had the knowledge of
printing. Chinese produced literature and developed libraries.
Indian Civilizations
India had great and glorious past right from antiquity of Dravadian
civilization in Sing (Indus) Valley. Excavations of Mohanjodaro and
Harrapa in Indus valley reveal that India had well developed civilization
5000 years ago. The Aryans-most intelligent and civilized race,
conquered Indus valley and spread into Indo-Gangetic planes during
2000 BC. They established their political hegemony in as many as
sixteen states in Northern India. Their education was through oral
discourses. Great works in the fields of religion, philosophy basic
literature, medicine and science were developed. Vedas, Brahmanas,
Arnayakas and Upanishads were produced and memorized. Great school
of learning and universities were established which had big libraries at
Nalanda, Magadh, Taxila, Vikramshila which contained works on
philosophy, literature, drama, art, science and mathematics. 700 BC to
500 A.D. there were great scholars and thinkers like Dhanwantri,
Nagarjun, Charak, Sushrut, Aryabhat, Varahmjira, Patanjali, Vyasa,
Gutam, Mahavira, Budha and so on.
Middle Ages
in the early middle ages constatine the great became the emperor
of Roman Empire in 324 AD. He established imperial Library in
resident community of scholars. over the last two decades, there has
been a gradual erosion of traditional stakeholders positive perceptions
based on collections. furthermore, Indian universities have tended to
develop a culture of relying on donations of library materials regardless
of the appropriateness of content to needs of recipients or curricula. this
emerging role has oblighations, which have been analyzed in this paper.
1.4 Impact of Information Technology on the Library.
the term Information Technology (IT) has been variously defined.
Marshall (1984) defined it as the coming together of computing and
telecommunications for the purpose of handling information: the
application of technologies to information handling; including
generation , storage, processing, retrieval and dissemination. it is also
concerned with the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of
information-textual, numerical, pictorial and vocal. it is a broad-based
term comprising the gathering (acquisition), organization (packaging),
storage and retrieval (dissemination) of information that can be in
textual or numerical (books documents), pictorial and vocal forms

2.1 Statement of the problem
it has been observed that the application of modern information
technologies to academic libraries activities and services in DIT
University library seems inadequate probably due to a variety of factors,
including human factors, fear, and the state of infrastructural
development of the country. Not a few library practitioners also believe
that there is hardly much benefits that can be derived from the use of IT
applications there by giving preferences fro the manual library
operations. those who are aware of its benefits are afraid of being
eliminated from their jobs; though knowing that its application to library

LIBRARY SERVICES
The knowledge centre has been providing a variety of manual as
well as electronic service to its users. apart from the conventional library
services such as reading, lending, reference, referral, bibliography,
documentation , the library also renders electronic services by retrieving
information through OPAC, CD-ROM Search, microform search and
internet search. some of the important services are:

Library membership is open to the faculty, staff, students and
Research Scholars. At present there are 5000 members of the library.

online information systems/internet in different areas of concern.
inter-library loan (ILL) services
library has arrangements with different libraries in NCR. this
facility is available for both faculty and students. the library provides

use of library by its clientele and the improvement made for the better
development of GBPUAT library with present resources-physicalliterature and man power. on the basis of the results/findings some useful
suggestions can be made for further improvement of the library.

First of all a simple questionnaire has been designed which
contains 31 questions mostly to be answered in yes or no. All these

STATISTICAL TREATMENT INTERPRETATION
AND CONCLUSION
The success of a library to great and effective activities. it is also
essential to find out the reason for its inefficiency activities, if any, so as
to rectify the same. as part of his official duties the librarian makes his
descriptive details and mass of information have to be reduced into facts
and figures comparison of activities with those of the previous years and
also with those of other libraries can be effectively done with the help of
library statistics. for the valuation, measurement and control of services
and output of work, statistics are necessary. statistics are tabulated
figures on facts in figures. in statistics, descriptive fiures are reduced to
figures statistics is a branch of mathematical science which deals with
the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of a mass of
numerical data. the term librametry was coined by Ranganathan in
1948 to denote the application of statistical calculators to library
operations.

IMPLICATIONS, LIMITATIONS & SUGGESTIONS
limitations
some pople argue that scientific method is more applicable to
physical or exact sciences and it cannot be applied to social sciences
which deal with human behavior. those holding this opinion point out
the following difficulties in use of scientific method.
1. human behavior is complicated, subtle and varied. therefore, it is
very difficult to categories human vehavior.
2. when human behavior is studied and analyzed by other human
beings, the personal characteristics of such human beings come in
to the picture and distort the analytical facts.
