INTRODUCTION
Telecom sector in India
India is worlds second largest telecommunications market and third highest in number of
internet users in the world. The telecom sector in India experienced a rapid growth over the past
decade on account of regulatory liberalisation, structural reforms and competition.(exhibit 1.1)
The industry also benefits the Indian economy significantly (exhibit 1.2)

Industry overview
Major players include the government initiative (BSNL,MTNL) and private ventures
like Tata DoCoMo, Reliance Communications, AirTel, IDEA, Telenor India, Vodafone
India and MTS. Services are offered in the form of two schemes prepaid plans and
postpaid plans that enable users to select a convenient choice of services. The
private organizations are regulated by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Future of telecom sector in India


India will emerge as a leading player in the virtual world by having 700 million internet users of
the 4.7 billion global users by 2025, as per a Microsoft report. With the governments favourable
regulation policies and 4G services hitting the market, the Indian telecommunication sector is
expected to witness fast growth in the next few years. Telecom industry will see fierce battle as
Reliance Jio takes on Airtel, Vodafone & Idea in 2016.
