Rocket Club
Sponsorship Packet

The Tuskegee University Rocketry Club (TURC) had a successful inaugural year operating
as an official club under Tuskegee University and has made many exciting
accomplishments. We have competed in the 2016 NASA USLI, got student members
immediate hands on rocketry experience, and helped them get their own National
Association of Rocketry Level 1 High Powered Rocketry certification. To continue our
new found tradition of success in 2017, we have set extraordinary new goals for us to
achieve such as surpassing current records, acquiring new skills, winning multiple
competition awards, and competing in national competitions to show the world what
Tuskegee Univeristy truly has to offer. While currently utilizing our under funded
facilities and outdated machinery, we still strive to create the best possible launch
vehicles and test our innovative experiments. The TURC needs your support to reach
these challenging milestones for the 2016-2017 school year!

NAR/TAR Certifications
Before students begin the design and building process for the USLI and IREC ,we encourage and assist all of our
members to be familiar with all the basic fundamentals of rocketry and how to apply them throughout the
competitions. Calculating centers of pressure and center of gravity, solid motor propulsion systems, launch
operations, software coding, safety procedures, and structural design are only a miniscule amount of what new
members learn to complete their builds. To ensure that each team member has fully mastered the basics of
rocketry, all new members are required to attend certification workshops hosted by Senior Level members. In
these workshops new members will be taught how to design and build their very own high powered rocket which
they will fly to receive their NAR/TRA Level 1 licence High Powered Rocket. These certifications not only solidify
what techniques members have learned through working in the workshops but also aids them in building better
more sophisticated rockets in future competitions. Members who already have their Level 1 certifications are
encouraged to pursue their levels 2 and 3 licences.

USLI
The University Student Launch Initiative is an annual high
powered rocketry competition held in Huntsville Alabama
by NASA. In this competition universities across the
country are tasked with designing, building, launching, and
successfully recovering a high powered rocket launch
vehicle that carries a scientific payload to the max height
of 5,280ft. The club has previously competed in this
competition and has achieved university history as the first
group from Tuskegee to successfully launch and recover
the rocket. In the 2015-2016 USLI launch, we built a 5 inch
fiberglass body and a Loki K motor. The rocket reached a
height of 3840 ft. Due to financial and shipping Issues, our
custom payload only featured altimeters and batteries.
With your contribution we will be able to attain devices to
launch more advanced experiments and collect more data
in our next launches.

IREC
The Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition is a global sounding
rocket competition hosted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association. In
the past the ESRA has required teams to design and build a payload of 10 pounds
and fly at target altitudes from 10,000 ft to 23,000 feet above ground level
allowing Multistage rockets and all chemical propulsion types (solid, liquid, and
hybrid). The ESRA also releases a list of challenges that teams are expected to
compete in. Since the ESRA is more lenient with restrictions, TURC has plans to
create this competions rocket completely from scratch. This competition is
another first for the TURC and it really challenges the members on what we
already know about rocketry. Experimental engine and fuel testing plus the
combination of a heavier and more durable material really expands the limits of
our capability as team.

Iris Restoration
When the TURC isn't building rocket motors, testing
designs, or preparing for a competition we work on
restoring vintage aerospace memorabilia to display around
the campus. Some of the pieces we are working on
restoring includes an Original IRIS Rocket and Booster by
Atlantic Research (Rare), donated rocket nozzles, boosters,
and missiles. Not only does these exhibits beautify the
campus/department, they inspire more people to become
interested in Aerospace Engineering.

Community Outreach
Our main objective as a club is to influence the lives of the surrounding
minorities living in the Macon County area to pursue a future in STEM fields.
We meet with grade levels 1-12 at their schools to organize fun and
educational activities for each student to enjoy. Every member of the club is
required to participate in the the community outreach portion.
