Spring 2009
Solution to Homework #10

1. Refer to a study published in the Journal of Global Business (Spring 2002) about what Made in
the USA on product labels means to the typical consumer. There are 106 shoppers who participated
in the survey. Their responses, given as a percentage of U.S. labor and materials in four categories, are
summarized in the table.
Response to Made in USA Number of Shoppers

Suppose a consumer advocate group claims that in terms of the percentage of labor and materials
produced in US, half of all consumers believe that Made in USA means 100%, one-fourth believe it
means 75 99% , one-fifth believe it means 50 74%, 5% believe it means < 50%.
a What are the values of p1 , p2 , p3 , and p4 , the probabilities associated with the four response categories
hypothesized by the consumer advocate group?
p1 = 0.50, p2 = 0.25, p3 = 0.20, p4 = 0.05.
b Give the null and alternative hypotheses for testing the consumer advocate groups claim .
H0 : p1 = 0.50, p2 = 0.25, p3 = 0.20, p4 = 0.05; Ha : at least one equality does not hold.
c Compute the test statistics P
and find the rejection region at = 0.10.
The test statistic W = (Oi Ei )2 /Ei = 4.6792. The rejection region is {W > 6.2514}, where
6.2514 is the 90% quantile of a chi-square distribution with df = 3.
d State the conclusion.
Since the test statistic does not fall in the rejection region. We do not reject H0 at = 0.10.
2. In an experiment described in the Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics
(Dec. 2000), bins of corn were stocked with various parasites (e.g. grain moths) in later winter. In early
summer (June), three bowl-shaped traps were placed on the surface of grain in order to capture the
moths. All three traps were baited with a sex pheromone lure; however, one trap used an unmarked
sticky adhesive, one was marked with a fluorescent red powder, and one was marked with a fluorescent
blue powder. The traps were set on a Wednesday, and the catch was collected the following Thursday
and Friday. The accompanying table shows the number of moths captured in each trap on each day.
Conduct a test (at = 0.10) to determine whether the percentages of moths caught by the three traps
depends on the day of the week.

The null hypothesis is that the percentages of moths caught by the three traps are independent of the
day of the week. The table of expected frequency is

The test statistic W = (Oij Eij )2 /Eij = 4.3863. The rejection region is {W > 4.6052}, where 4.6052
is the 90% quantile of a chi-square distribution with df = 2. Since the test statistic does not fall in the
rejection region. We do not reject H0 at = 0.10.
