INTRODUCCION

If this vacation you do not know where to go


One of the most amazing places to visit in Ecuador is Pillaro.
You can feel like a giant Inca because from the hills of pilllaro you can look at some of the
important volcanoes and enjoy of diablada pillarea fest

LOCATION
Pillaro is located in the Tungurahua province
northwest of Ambato.
Time from Quito to Pillaro is 3:30 hours.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
The main economic activity is livestock,
Pillaro ranchers produce one hundred thousand liters of
milk daily.
Farmers produce vegetables, legumes (potatoes, carrots)
and a variety of fruit (tree tomato, Claudias).

ATTRACTIONS
The main tourist attraction is diablada pillarea feast

This feast is celebrated every year six consecutive


days, it take place the first January to 6.
People disguise as devils and dance through the
main streets of Pillaro, the devil disguise is composed
of: a devil mask, cabresto (its a whip), red shirt, red
pants and black shoes.
Some people wear long dresses with colorful
ornaments this costume is called guaricha.

NATIVE FRUIT

Pillaro native fruit is the mortio (its similar to capuli) that is


a purple fruit that is used to color foods.

TYPICAL FOOD

Main foods are guinea pig, baked pork, pasteles (its


prepared with cornmeal and cheese filling)
The most common drink is champus of mote and its
usually eaten with bread
Also montijo and limero are alcoholic drink prepared
with fermented cane

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Often pillaro organize wooden carts races in the


steepest streets, people can see for free
People can realize canopy and hiking

People can rent bikes and get to know the


Rumiahui.
On clear mornings people can observe volcanoes
as: Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo

Do you think it is important to foment traditional festivals?


I think it is import to foment traditional festivals because traditional festivals are activities
that leave a lot of money and part of our culture
What would you eat if you traveled to Pillaro? Would you drink champus of mote ?
If I traveled to Pillaro I would eat baked pork and guinea pig because I think that guinea pig
flavor is unique.
Yes I would, Id drink champus of mote because is a healthy food and I think that is a new
flavor that I could taste.
When you visit other cities do you prefer local food?
Yes I do .when I visit other cities I prefer local food. For example when I always go to the
beach I eat shrimps or crabs.
Would you wear as devil if you participated in Pillaro festivities?
If I participated in Pillaro fest Id wear as devil because I think that is very funny and I can
take funny pictures.
Do you think it is important to do community tourism?
Yes I do. I think that is important to do community tourism because I can help to economy
of pillaro and I can know new places.

VOCABULARY

Livestock: animals and birds that are kept on a farm, such as cows, sheep, or chickens.
Farmers: someone who owns or takes care of a farm.
Disguise: to give a new appearance to a person or thing, especially in order to hide its
true form.
Ornaments: decoration that is added to increase the beauty of something.
Viewpoints: a place from where a person can look at something, especially at an area of
natural beauty.
Cornmeal: yellow flour made from maize, used to make bread, tortillas, etc.
Whip: a piece of leather or rope that is fastened to a stick, used for hitting animals or
people.
Hill: an area of land that is higher than the surrounding land.
Guinea pig: a small animal covered in fur with rounded ears, short legs, and no tail, often
kept as a pet by children. IN ECUADOR IT IS CALLED CUY
Horn: pointed, often curved part that grows from the top of the head of some animals.
Bullfighting: the sport of baiting and killing a bull as a public spectacle in an outdoor
arena.
Fat: a natural oily or greasy substance occurring in animal bodies.
Leather: a material made from the skin of an animal.
Cane: is a plant that used to make sugar
Filling: a quantity of material that fills or is used to fill something.
