ay 22nd dawned overcast and the
proximity to the Columbia River
promised a frigid temperature over
the surrounding area. Nevertheless, hundreds of
men, women, and children turned out to take
part in the America Heart Walk. Stretching
from the Red Lion Inn near the quay, the route
ended near Beaches Restaurant and Bar, where
participants turned around and hiked back.
The event provided Washington State
University students with a chance to volunteer
and connect WSUV with the community. Jenny
Mockford helped head up a small group of

her fellow students in assisting the volunteers
including Butch the Cougar. The students stood
a small distance away from the starting line and
handed out red participation beads to walkers
as they passed. Other students from Vancouver
School of Arts and Academics also attended to
help bestow necklaces on participants. Oswald

Once the walkers headed out from the finish,
the WSUV volunteers prepared for their return.
For each finisher, they passed out blue beads.
Of course, waiting for their return proved a trial
due to heavy rain beginning around 10:30 a.m.

O’Lennick responded to the invitation from
Jenny Mockford, and assisted in distributing
participation beads. “We’re working more closely
with the extension office at WSU,” he said.
The extension office works toward promoting
community as well as interest in Washington State
University. It supports the efforts of students in
engaging civically and helps coordinate large-
scale volunteer projects like the Martin Luther
King Jr. Day of service back in January. So far,
they have worked with the Vancouver Water
Resource center, Ridgefield Parks Restoration,
and others.
In addition to volunteer projects, O’Lennick
hopes to raise student involvement in events put
on by the OSI. He believes one way to do this
is through putting on large events, such as the
past Spring Gala, and advertising constantly
before the activity happens. “If we make events
tradition, we can increase attendance to them
over time.”

WSUV Community Garden Takes One Green Step Forward

been hard at work since last fall to

charge of the project next year. The

Professor Giarelli prepares to lecture in Eastern Europe

University, is once again the winner
of a Fulbright Scholar grant. Giarelli
will teach in the Slovak Republic
at Comenius University: the oldest
university in the Slovak Republic.
He will leave for Europe shortly after
WSUV’s fall semester and plans to
return sometime during the summer
of 2011.
“The Slovak Republic was my first
choice,” said Giarelli in an interview
with the VanCougar. “I visited there
in 2008 and was fascinated by the
culture. I liked how the young people
were eager to talk to you and learn
about America and its culture.”
The Slovak Republic is a young
nation-state. Formerly part of
Czechoslovakia, the people of the
Slovak Republic were swallowed
up first by the Axis powers during
WWII, and later by Soviet Russia.
In 1989, Czechoslovakia broke with
the crumbling Soviet Union in what
is called the Velvet Revolution. In
January of 1993, the Slovak Republic
peacefully broke from the Czech
Republic, an event known as the
Velvet Divorce.
Comenius University is in the
capital city of the Slovak Republic,
Bratislava. Giarelli says it is a
beautiful, old, and compact city with
a population just under a half million.
Giarelli knows he will be teaching
a Survey of American Folklore class
(he is an expert on Mark Twain),
as well as a course on American

democracy and journalism. While
he is quick to say that he is not a
historian, Giarelli suspects he will be
asked to teach a course on American
democracy, as well.
Giarelli is a fascinating blend of
academic, journalist, travel writer and
linguist. In 1993, he won a Fulbright
Scholar grant to teach in Malta, a
small island in the Mediterranean
south of Italy. He arrived at what
he calls a “tense time” in Malta’s
history. To the south, Libya’s
dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi was
threatening to lob missiles at Europe.
To the east, ethnic tensions were alive
and violent in the Balkans. During
his time in Malta, Giarelli wrote a
number of articles on these events for
National Geographic and some other
magazines and newspapers.
Since 1972, Giarelli has traveled to
Italy 12 times and has written a great
deal about the history, culture, and
sites of the country. He is currently
writing a book about the “talking
statues” of Rome.
Giarelli intends to take advantage
of this fact. He will spend a week
wandering Vienna. “I’m thinking
about a story on Vienna,” Giarelli
says.
Classes end at Comenius
University in June, but Giarelli hopes
to stay in Eastern Europe for a bit
longer. He has a special journalistic
interest in Croatia, Bosnia, and
Moldova: countries still tensed to the
breaking point by ethnic divides. He
has also been asked to guest lecture
at a number of other European
universities.
Giarelli thinks this trip may be the
beginning of a new phase in his life.
He has long been a student of Italy,
but now he sees his interests shifting
to the less-explored sites and culture
of Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
He plans to return to the northwest
and WSUV. “I hope to learn more
about European culture and to share
it with Washington State University
and PSU students.”
Giarelli taught English at PSU
from 1996 to 2006 and founded
PSU’s graduate writing program.
During the 90s, he was founding
editor of the regional magazine
“Edging West.” According to the
Oregonian, he was a journalism
professor at Utah State University
and New York University earlier in
his career.
In recent years, Giarelli has been
teaching courses on technical writing.
He has also taught some English
courses on Shakespeare.

events such as lectures and town
hall meetings is no coincidence
either. Student involvement in
government activism is lower
during the summer, while student
leaders research upcoming bills
and so on to plan the next goal in
student lobbying. “We also hope
to have legistators on campus for
debates around the election times,”
O’Lennick continued.
The American Heart Walk was
one of the events that turn up
during summer months. While
the turnout for WSUV students
did not reach high numbers, those
who attended seemed a little
more dedicated than most. Edwin
Osorio was one such student. The
mechanical engineering major
mentioned he enjoyed volunteering
and involvement in the WSUV
activities. “I’m also a part of Nerd
Girls,” he added. Cassie Eckman
formed this Clark College student
organization a few years ago in
an effort to promote women as
well as men in Math and Science
majors. The members also expound
upon the fun to be had learning
in those areas. Osorio filled the
Vice-Presidential role during the
first year of the club’s existence.
During the last week of June, he
will accompany other members of
the club to an elementary school
to teach them how to create bottle
rockets. He cited Clark Professor
Tina Barsotti as an important figure
in his getting involved in college
volunteer opportunities.
As the event drew to a close, the
WSUV volunteers slowly dispersed.
However, it was not before two
walkers clad in purple approached
Butch and asked for finisher’s
beads. The cougar handed them
over and the women accepted them
with thanks, adding, “Go Huskies!”
With only a small masked glare in
their direction, Butch rallied and
returned to his task.

The halls of learning are less populated due
to the tendencies for vacation, the need for
rest, and the time to build up some cash from
summer jobs.
With the number of summer enrollments less
than fall and spring semester levels, the Office
of Student Involvement naturally cuts back on
programs that run through the regular semesters.
Programs such as movie nights, parties, and so
forth are less in number. The general consensus
seems to be the indoor activities detract from
time spent in the sunshine. The events sponsored
by the OSI’s Recreation branch are tailored for
warmer summer weather and have only slightly
decreased in number. Due to the delay in the

doors. This is still in the research phase, but
will depend on future student interest. McIlvoy
affirmed the smaller number of campus events
compared to the full semester periods: “The
summer is a time for planning, transition, and
training,” she says. Taking advantage of the
smaller number of students on campus and
therefore lower demand for events, the OSI
trains new employees; new ambassadors will go
through twelve days of training to prepare for
the ROAR orientation for new students in June
as well as later in August. The Senate and the
rest of Student Government will attend retreats
this summer to establish working relationships
with newcomers as well as study leadership
techniques.
The OSI continues to sponsor spots at events
around the area. They continue to purchase
tickets to leadership conferences or local
lectures and offer them free or at marked-down
prices over the summer to interested students.
Denise Eyerly and Shawn Romine agreed,
“The events fill up.” The windsurfing and rock-
climbing trips in the past have received the
most attendees. Eyerly and Romine did note,
however, that more non-students filled out the
trip than those who attended WSUV. Various
employees of the Recreation branch will
receive wilderness training later this summer
to prepare for future camping, hiking, and river
trips. The fitness center is closed for remodeling
before the Fall semester. This marks the second
summer in a row in which the fitness center
was closed for remodeling, though patrons
should not worry. Romine remembers the time
before the first remodeling. “There weren’t any
machines or weights or staff,” he says.
KOUG Radio Disk Jockeys are continuing
their shows over the summer. Other clubs are
active, but due to the end of Spring semester
and subsequent graduations, various leadership
positions within the registered student
organizations lie vacant. Morgan Parker,

Jonathan Williams, a senior finishing out
his degree with summer classes, said he was
more involved as a Junior than he was in his
Senior year. “Once my summer classes are
over, I’m done,” says Williams. He noticed a
lot of the students who were involved in the
events had minimal jobs, or jobs that required
around ten hours a week. The events most
effective in gaining Student Involvement as far
as he witnessed were the recreational events.
Students, faculty, and staff who hiked or camped
on their own often got involved in the hiking or
camping trips sponsored by the university.
Nevertheless, with tried and true methods,
and two months to plan and train, the OSI looks
to be well-suited in preparing for the coming
fall and the fresh challenges ahead.

Consider this: as a nation, what
literature do we share in common?
The reality is that our generation
is one of the first generations in
American history to not have a shared
literary tradition. Not long ago the
majority of Americans shared, as a
bare minimum, a common familiarity
with the Bible and some Shakespeare.
And a great many of that majority
had read the Greek philosophers.
Now you might say, “So what?
Why should we care?” To some, it is
a tremendous relief that the children
of the next generation will not be
force-fed old English plays, Greek
thought, and other dead white men
rubbish. No, they will learn much
more practical things.
But the truth is that we need this
“rubbish” more than ever. There are
a multitude of reasons, but let me
focus on language.
It is a saying in debate circles that,
“He who defines wins.” The truth
is that debates are hardly possible
anymore because we must spend all
of our time defining our terms because
there is no common understanding of
the word. (More often than not, the
debaters will abandon reasonable
debate altogether and resort to

This issue turned out better than I
had expected, taken into account all
the problems unexpectedly coming
up at the last minute. It is the first
time the VanCougar has ever done
a summer paper and I am so excited
for the other three issues that will
come out in June and July.
The weather has been so bad
lately. There have been many times
in the past two weeks when I would
wake up and ask myself, “Is this
summer?!?!” I have been putting
in a lot of hours in my other job.
On my precious days off I wanted
to do something fun outside… but
who would go to the zoo when it’s
raining?! Oh the joys of living in the
Pacific Northwest…let’s just hope
the weather will get better soon.
The VanCougar is hiring for
reporters. If you are looking for some
way to be involved, this is a perfect
idea! Being a writer, you get to attend
the events and know what is going
on around the WSUV campus. There
is NO experience needed; we will
provide all the training! Just come up

Welcome to the newest column in
the VanCougar Newspaper! I have
retired “The Rant” And have started
up a new column called “Retro”
This will focus on the old school
gamer and/or old school games.
Don’t get me wrong. I love mod-
ern games as well, even if they could
be considered old. Team Fortress 2
(TF2), Spore, Call of Duty: Mod-
ern Warfare 2 and Resident Evil
5 are all deliciously good. Same
with the latest Legend of Zelda.
But you cannot ignore the classics.
Chrono Trigger for instance is one
of the classics of all classics. Same
with Super Mario World or Super
Mario Brothers 3. There are many
other classics as well, ranging from
the first Metriod to Frogger. Some of
our best series like Metal Gear Solid
came from horrible unkown games
with bad English translations that in-
terestingly enough made them popu-
lar. Classics can never be replaced,
and definitely never improved on.
Take for example, the Final Fan-
tasy Series, nearly every gamer has
played one of the Final Fantasy series
in his or her life, there have been over
17 of them. Yeah, I am including the
ones like Final Fantasy Tactics, Crys-
tal Chronicles, and the ones on PSP
and Gameboy, even Dissdia. The de-
bate over what has been the best Final
Fantasy game has been in constant
debate over Final Fantasy III (or VI,
same game) VII and X/X-2. These
games can be considered the clas-
sics as they are close to our hearts.
We could feel what Square Enix
was capable of from these games.
So when Final Fantasy announced,
with great vigor how amazing Final
Fantasy XIII was going to be, we all
were pumped up. Would it be another
VI? We have waited years to find out
and creating a society based on pure
reason. The history of the word
ideology is largely forgotten, but we
still get a feel for its original meaning
in the word ideologue: a loathsome
creature blind to the merit of any idea
other than its vision of earthly utopia.
And yet nearly everyday, I cringe
at the words “conservative ideology.”
There is by definition no such thing!

what would be unveiled to us and what
did we get? A pile of broken dreams
made out of glass shards rubbed
into our faces, that is what we got.
Final Fantasy XIII can never live
up to its predecessors in the way that
it presents it’s essentially destroyed
any representation of the classic
game play. I would go into details
but then that would take away an
edition of “Retro” now wouldn’t it?
Nintendo is committing suicide
in a similar fashion. As original as
the concept for Super Mario Gal-
axy is, people are getting incredibly
tired of seeing Nintendos mascot so
many different-themed games from
being a doctor to cleaning up pollu-
tion like he is in the Gulf of Mexi-
co, that Barbie has ran out outfits to
wear. People want to see Mario do
what he does best, platform jumping.
My argument is that nothing can
replace the classics, and nothing can
replace a nice old school feel. Some

ing the “pixelated” feel to their art-
work and games for this reason. True
gamers are drawn back to the retro
feeling of older games like the clas-
sics on the Nintendo and Super Nin-
tendo, and even the Sega Genesis.
Chances are if you are a gamer,
you own an emulator or two, and
what do you emulate? Most likely,
the Super Nintendo. Even if you do

my point.) By nature, an ideology
conserves nothing but tears down
society to its very foundations.
And there a multitude of other
examples. Use virtue in a sentence
not, I bet you still like some of the
old games you played, case in point,
Starfox. Most gamers do not like the
direction the star fox series has gone.
Most love Starfox 64 or the very first
one on the Super Nintendo. When you
are playing that series you want to fly
around and blow up bad guys, not
run around with a stick bashing dino-
saurs on the head and lifting up rocks.
Even Halo suffers this problem.
When halo first came out, the pistol
was the most popular weapon for
any experienced gamer. Pistol snip-
ing was the pinnacle achievement
of any player. Noobs dreamed of the
day where they could drop the rocket
launcher and banshee and use the pis-
tol like the pros. What does Halo 2
and 3 do? Nerf the pistol. Why Bun-
gie why? The outcry was so strong
they had to return the pistol in ODST.
We need to learn to appreciate our
classics, as I feel there will not be clas-
sic coming out for us anytime soon.
With the current online craze that is
going on, chances are there will be lit-
tle to no “good” games in production.
This is because of something I like
to call “The Noob Factor”. This is
another issue I will not go into great
detail about, because it’s another pos-
sible topic for an edition. “The Noob
Factor” is the whining and com-
plaining of players that do not have
the required skills to play well in a
game and die quite often from other
players. Combine this with online
gameplay, and you get great games
that get slowly turned d into a pile of
junk from all the nerfing and tweak-
ing. This includes items that will in-
stantly make you into a Jedi, which
was one of the hardest classes to earn
in Star Wars Online and the diffi-
culty of earning level 60 or 80 in the
World of Warcraft a complete Joke.
Until developers learn the mean-
ing of don’t mess with perfection,
and that true gamers like a chal-
lenge, we will not have a good
game out there for a very long time.
However, we do have hope. Re-
cently a game that I feel will likely
become one of the great games of all
time and a classic was on the mar-
today and the average person
will just blink at you. And yet
it is a tremendously powerful
word that, when understood
in the context of Aristotle,
allows us to discuss ethics
with greater ease.
The point is that, because
our common literary tradition
is South Park, our language is
increasingly cumbersome.
And we should not create a
new literary curriculum. We
cannot substitute Shakespeare
for Twilight or Plato for
Foucault. Neither has stood
the test of time. This might
seem a cliché reason, but it
is nevertheless true. As C.S.
Lewis points out, the writings
of our time are all infused with
the spirit of our age. Thus, as
participants in that age, we are
often blind to the faults of our
own age. And yet we are very
critical of the faults of the
past. Thus, it is better to read
what is old because we are
not in danger of falling into
the ancients’ errors and can perceive
the errors of our own time by looking
through their eyes.
Therefore, I hope our generation
will reclaim our literary tradition. We
can again give power to words.

gamers. It was a first person shooter
but without the killing. You used por-
tals that you shoot from your gun to
solve puzzles. and GlaDos, the nem-
esis was so witty and characterized so
uniquely that it made the game worth
playing over just to hear her talk.
Also, I cannot ignore a clas-
sic game that was online and not
messed around with, Counter Strike.
For all my loathing of how online
games get nerfed or made too easy
Counter Strike is Clearly an excep-
tion to this rule. The developers did
not mess with the game as it pro-
duced sequels and absolutely did
not destroy it by making it too easy.
Basically, if you are looking
for quality games that will be re-
membered and loved for all time,

Tuition on the rise again in 2010!

for the upcoming school year. How-
ever, students returning and new alike
will see an increase in the price of
tuition take effect for the 2010-2011
school year when they register and
pay for classes.
The tuition hike is likely a direct
result of Washington State’s growing
deficit currently sitting at nearly three
billion dollars. Tuition is a sizable
portion of any government’s budget,
and increases in tuition means in-
creases in government revenue.
In May of 2009, the Board of Re-
gents approved a tuition increase of
14% for the upcoming school year.
During the course of the last year, the
average student saw an increase in
their tuition by approximately $870.
And the 2010-2011 school year will
see an even larger increase.
Tuition for resident undergraduate
students currently sits at $8,080. But
undergraduates will not be the only
classifications of students to be af-
fected by this tuition hike. Resident
graduate students will expect to see
a 5% increase on the previous year’s
tuition, which will settle at $8,340.

With a new administration come
new views and responses to those is-
sues. Every administration, past and
present has had a different approach to
different problems. Each administra-
tion has its own distinct personality,
and many students should expect to
find out what the administration has
to show them at the start of the school
year, if not by the end of the summer
semester. And of course, students are
beginning to think ahead to events that
will be planned for the upcoming year,
as each new administration has its
own wishes as to what will be offered
to students, or who will be invited to
campus to speak (last year’s guest
speaker series was very successful).
Whatever the coming academic
year has in store for the students
here, the ASWSUV is ready to hit
the ground running and roll up their
sleeves for another successful year.

A
new year, a new beginning.
With the exit of the previ-
ous administration, and
the entrance of a new administration,
students at Washington State Univer-
sity Vancouver can look forward to
a number of things this coming year.
The members of the new student
government have begun to familiar-
ize themselves with each other, and
are gearing up for a new year. With
President Mason O’Lennick and Vice
President Tiffany Moore at the helm,
many students are looking ahead to
new challenges, new events, and new
experiences. Indeed, student govern-
ment already has their hands full with
preparations for the new year.
ASWSUV is in the process of
working on a budget for the coming
semesters, and additionally have an
OSI retreat to attend over the summer.
New students to the school will have
many of the same questions as previ-
ous students when they first arrived on
the campus. That’s right. ROAR ori-
entation is just around the corner, and
many students are expected to attend
and become acquainted with the cam-
pus and the new government.
This will be student government’s first
major engagement with the student
body since the election last year.
ROAR will be OSI’s first chance to
learn of the new student body’s demo-
graphics. Once ROAR is completed,
the school year won’t be far off, and
student government will officially be
in action. Many students are wonder-
ing what to expect with this new ad-
ministration. Soon, the student body
will begin to adjust to the new ad-
ministration’s policies and processes.

WSU Baseball
There’s no way anyone can
absolutely hate baseball. Some can’t
stand watching it and some can’t
stand playing it but there aren’t
many who can’t stand both. Now that
we’ve established that, Washington
State University Baseball is doing
great so far. In the past couple
weeks, Cougars took a victory over
USC with a score of 8 to 2 in the
Pac-10 Conference, thus putting
them third place in the Pac-10. The
game was hosted at Bailey-Brayton
Field. Right now they are playing
postseason, which is noteworthy, as
the Cougars also played postseason
last year. This marks the first time
that the Cougars have played in the
postseason twice in a row. So, to the
people who hate watching baseball,
watch the Cougs play, because this is
history-in-the-making. And to those
who love watching baseball, this is
an opportunity for excitement and a
time to definitely watch not only for
the love of watching the game but
also for the opportunity of watching
some good games.
WSU Basketball
Just as a heads up months
in advanced, Washington State
University Men’s Basketball
will be playing in an exhilarating
tournament that many would not
want to miss. The tournament is
planned for December 22 to 25 and
it is the Hawaiian Airlines Head
Classic hosted at the University of
Hawai’i at Stan Sheriff Center in
Honolulu. Teams playing include
our fellow Cougars, Florida State,
Mississippi, Baylor, Utah, San
Diego, Butler and Hawai’i of

It is springtime again which means
it is also time for the 2010 NBA play-
offs. The play-offs started in April and
continue for the next couple weeks.
This is an exciting time for fans and
teams, as the players fight their way
to the top. Since the season is almost
over, and people are waiting for the
finals, it is important that everyone be
up-to-speed to avoid embarrassment
at final get-togethers.
For the play-offs 16 top teams of
the year qualified to play for the final
NBA title. These 16 teams accounted
for each of the conferences. 8 teams

compete for the Eastern conference
while 8 teams compete for the
Western conference. The winner will
be considered the top team nationally.
Teams that played in the Eastern
conference were the Atlanta Hawks,
Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, the
Charlotte Bobcats, Orlando Magic,
the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks
and the Chicago Bulls. Teams that
played for the Western conference
were the Los Angeles Lakers,
Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio
Spurs, the Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz,
the Dallas Mavericks, Oklahoma City
Thunder and the Denver Nuggets.
Games are based off of the best of
seven wins. However, some teams
don’t play each other more than four
games if a team has won the first
four. Ties do occur during the play-
offs, but the NBA has a hierarchy
of rules to break such ties. Rules
for tie-breakers are based on (in
order) division leader, head-to-head
record, division record, conference
record versus play off teams in their
conference then the other conference
and point differential based off of all
games. This is quite an affective was
to make sure only one team comes
out on top.
During the play-offs web sites, TV
channels, newspapers and more set
up brackets to help show which teams
have won and which have advanced
to each of the play-off levels. The
levels are the first round that consists
of all the teams competing. The next
level is the conference semifinals,
followed by the conference finals.
This all ends with the goal every
team was shooting for, the NBA
Finals. After the hard work to reach
the Finals, the two teams that will be
competing this year are the Boston
Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The NBA Finals, which began
June 2, are aired on ABC on June 6,
June 8 and June 10. If there is a tie and
more games must be played they will
also be on ABC on June 13, June 15
and June 17. Times are 9 p.m. Eastern
Daylight Time (6pm Pacific Standard
Time) so set your dish reminders and
TiVo to avoid missing these amazing
games and NBA history. You don’t
want to miss this event. It will go
down in sports history.
