Mark 12:33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and
with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is
more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
I Corinthians 9:22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am
made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21 - 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering
together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good 12 And the earth
brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit,
whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good 18 And to rule
over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God
saw that it was good 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature
that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every
winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Matthew 28:19-20 - 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always,
even unto the end of the world. Amen.
I Corinthians 14:33, 40 - 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace,
as in all churches of the saints. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
PRINCIPLE EIGHT:
Provide a safe, secure environment to share ideas.
A. People must be without fear in sharing their ideas.
B. We must have freedom to bring up ideas for change.
C. Leaders must be secure in receiving ideas; not taking them personally.
D. Ideas and idea givers must find a nonthreatening, welcoming environment.
E. You must distinguish between a positive critique and a complaining spirit.
Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of
counsellors there is safety.
PRINCIPLE NINE:
Build a team mindset to avoid departmental barriers.
A. We must be a single team instead of many little teams.
B. As churches departmentalize they tend to become departmentalized.
C. We must gather periodically to communicate and share ideas.
D. Some of the best insights are gained through anothers perspective.
E. Ministry leaders must always see the big picture.
Genesis 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one
language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which
they have imagined to do.

Principle of celebration & critique; meet after events to team build & affirm
We are all human & can drop the ball show love & grace.
We must maintain quality relationships.
Quality improvement is like the wiring or plumbing of a house hard initially,
but once it is up and running we can use it without trouble.
5. People can become defensive and say, Im a volunteer. Why should I have to put
up with these standards?
KEYS TO EXCELLENCE
1. We must possess a passion for excellence.
Psalms 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
2. We are a learning organization.
Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man
of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
3. Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have

Lesson #9
Quality in the Physical Arena
INTRODUCTION
Churches only get one chance to make a lasting impression.- Alan Nelson
Exodus 25:1-12 - 1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of
Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye
shall take my offering. 3 And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver,
and brass, 4 And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair, 5 And rams'
skins dyed red, and badgers' skins, and shittim wood, 6 Oil for the light, spices for anointing
oil, and for sweet incense, 7 Onyx stones, and stones to be set in the ephod, and in the
breastplate. 8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. 9 According
to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments
thereof, even so shall ye make it. 10 And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits
and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit
and a half the height thereof. 11 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without
shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about. 12 And thou shalt
cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be
in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it.
These scriptures point to the fact that God deserves our very best when it comes to His
House. If He expected the very best in the Old Testament, what does He expect in the New
Testament? Lets notice what areas should be a matter of concern when we talk about
Quality in the Physical Arena.

Our Publications
Exodus 34:28 - And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did
neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the
covenant, the ten commandments.
A. Our publications say a lot about who we are as a congregation.
B. Anything we print must seek to represent the church in an excellent manner.
C. You dont know where every piece you print, copy or mail lands.
D. We want our people to feel proud of where they worship as well as communicate
excellence in all that we do.
E. Every piece of publicity (programs, newsletters, tapes, videos, flyers, websites)
reflects who we are and can communicate a lack of quality.
Colossians 3 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24
Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the
Lord Christ.
33
Our Presence
A. We need to think through how we are appearing to the people we serve.
B. The goal is not to always dress up, but rather to dress like the people to whom you are
ministering.
1 Samuel 16:7 - But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the
height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
A story is told of three bricklayers who were asked what they were making. The first
responded, Im making $15 dollars an hour. The second answered, Im making a
building. The third said, Im making a beautiful cathedral which will reflect the glory
of God and provide a place of worship for His people. The third was fired because he
was supposed to be building a garage, but you get the point. GOD DESERVES OUR
BEST.
34
Worship
John 4:24 - God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in
truth.
A. Sunday Morning Worship
1.
2.
3.
4.
B. We must constantly remind people from time to time that our goal is to connect with
God.
C. When people are not able to provide the caliber of worship that is needed, then the
church will do its best to train, stretch and find a place where their gifts are best
utilized.
The opportunities we provide should be based on the abilities people have, not on how
much money they give or how long they have been a part of the church.
Quality must include: character, attitude and motivation.
35
Ministries
Ephesians 4:11-12 - And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the
work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
A. Ministry is nothing less than dispensing Gods grace.
B. The ministry leaders job is to help people find the place of ministry that will best
utilize their gifts, skills and passions.
C. The warm-body approach to filling ministry positions is counter-productive and nonbiblical.
D. God never placed people in positions because they wanted to be there, He placed
them there because they were gifted enough to be there and thats what pleased Him.
E. When we compromise the quality of a ministry for the sake of an individual member,
we lower it.
For example, allowing Jane to sing a solo because shes done it for years, even
though shes not a strong singer, subjects people to mediocrity.
F. The ministry leaders job is to help Jane find a place to use her gifts where they will
be enhanced, such as with an ensemble or a choir that matches her ability level.
G. Ministry agreements become helpful tools in recruiting and holding ministry
members accountable.
H. A ministry agreement allows a person to know exactly what the ministry role entails
including to whom the person answers, fundamental skills required, time
commitments, and how much training will be provided by the church.
I. Our present ministries must reflect our core values and ministry niche as a whole.
III.
Ministry Placement
1 Corinthians 12:18 - But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body,
as it hath pleased Him.
A. Our job is two-fold: creating quality ministries by developing quality ministry leaders
and developing people in their own gifts.
36
Sunday School
2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not
to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
A. Most churches are notorious for recruiting a Sunday School teacher, tossing him or
her a Sunday School guide, and wishing them Gods best.
B. Just because someone has taught in the public sector, doesnt mean they qualify to
teach in the house of God. The public school might prioritize control and content,
while the church might prioritize care and process but you wont know until you
interview and monitor him or her in action.
C. Training must be a priority when we are seeking to please God in all of our teaching
endeavors.
D. Doctors, psychologists, nurses, teachers, sales people, and even chiefs are required
to attend continuing education classes. Do we do the same for our ministry
members?
37
Resources
Doctor, heres an ax and a butter knife. You can go ahead and perform this
appendectomy. The patient has a need, and were glad youre here. Now take the ax and
butter knife and get started.
A. We must make sure we have quality resources.
B. It is difficult to have a quality worship service and the sound system isnt working
well. You cant make good people sound good with a mediocre sound system.
Romans 10:14-17 - How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and
how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear
without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How
beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of
good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath
believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
C. Dingy lighting and shoddy dcor in the sanctuary do lower program quality.
D. Measuring our ministry effectiveness is very critical.
Living in obedience to Gods specific call for our church is our responsibility. God calls
no one to mediocrity. When were dealing with the eternal destiny of people and matters of
the heart, we must not do business as usual. Nothing is more important than the
fulfillment of the Great Commission.
38
II.
III.
Quality in the spiritual arena involves measuring spiritual growth, deciding what our core
values are and developing a variety of ways to measure growth.
We must not only track and evaluate how we treat people, our property, and our
programs, but we must also track and evaluate spiritual growth.
Jesus measured spiritual growth by reaching the lost. Churches should be in the business
of soul winning, not sheep swapping.
Matthew 15:24 - But He answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the
house of Israel.
Matthew 18:11 - For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
IV.
One of the ways churches can measure spiritual growth is by measuring how many
people came to know Jesus Christ.
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
V.
VI.
Other ways to measure spiritual growth are by measuring how many people are getting
involved in ministry and how many people are discovering their gifts.
In order to continue to be effective we must ask questions such as:

Churches in the past used to learn one way of doing things and they stuck with it.
Cutting-edge churches now recognize that if they do the same, theyll soon become
dinosaurs.
VIII.
When youre in a learning mode, you dont get overconfident or proud that youve
arrived.
IX.
Learning churches are known for reading, attending relevant conferences, brainstorming,
networking ideas and training,
X.
Every church needs to have a strategy for learning and leadership. We need to be willing
