SOME OBSERVATIONS ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE
1. Poor service is the number one reason American companies lose business.
2. The average dissatisfied customer tells nine others of the dissatisfaction.
3. It costs between 5 and 10 times as much to attract a new customer as it does to
keep an old one.
4. Excellence leads to increased sales.

III.

The Recommendations to Churches Concerning People


A. We must be vendors of spiritual growth opportunities.
B. Churches must have excellence with their property, programming and publicity.
C. Churches must never compromise on the message, but must change the methods if
they are to meet the needs of people.
D. Christians must remember that we are ambassadors, as liaisons between God &
humanity.
E. Capitalism, higher education, greater affluence and market competitiveness all
influence a persons decision to join a church.
F. As our culture changes, we must respond to its needs in a different way. If we do not,
we will lose touch & eventually close our doors.
G. Churches must put God first and people second.
H. Top service organizations gain reputations for second mile service.
I. Churches that seek to grow will develop events, programs and services that attract
more people.

PRINCIPLE ONE:
We want to be the best we can be, reach our potential, serve people better and glorify God.
To do this, we must be intentional and perpetual.
A. innovation
B. research and education
C. continuous improvement
D. maintenance of equipment, furnishings, facilities
Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on
unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of
faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of
resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit.
PRINCIPLE TWO:
Lets practice what we preach, and put thorns in our laurels.
A. We tend to rest on the accomplishments of the past.
B. Just because we have been effective in the past, doesnt mean it will continue.
C. We need to build methods of accountability.
Philippians 3:12-14 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect:
but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ
Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are
before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

PRINCIPLE THREE:
Everyone on the ministry team is involved in analyzing what we do, how we do it and how
we can do it better to serve the people best.
A. Everyone should be part of quality inspection.
B. We all must take responsibility in areas of improvement.
C. We must discuss how it went.
D. How it went is just as valuable as planning.
E. Leaders must ask, How can we improve?
Ephesians 4:11-13 - And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the
work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the
unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the
measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:
PRINCIPLE FOUR:
Who are the best people for the ministry tasks, and what are the best resources we can
afford?
A. The cheapest way is not always the best way.
B. Churches often confuse stewardship with cheapness.
C. Financial stewardship is getting the most for your investment.
D. We must think of quality with our staff, leaders, services and equipment.
E. Churches too often use the warm body syndrome.
F. Use the right people for the right positions.
G. Just because people are willing doesnt mean theyre qualified.
Luke 16:8 - And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely:
for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

PRINCIPLE FIVE:
We need to discuss the Q (quality) factor when we plan a project, after an event and in our
scheduled staff & leadership meetings.
A. Paid staff & membership must be committed.
B. Constant improvement must be intentional.
C. Putting out fires is different from quality improvement.
D. We must be proactive & not reactive.
1 Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
PRINCIPLE SIX:
Invest the time and money to teach, train and retrain people to develop their skills and to
implement quality ministry methods.
A. Churches too often put people in positions with little or no training.
B. The corporate world spends billions of dollars in training seminars.
C. The church world is undertrained.
D. We must be sensitive to peoples schedules.
E. We must not lower the bar to get people involved.
F. The Church should set the standard for excellence.
2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the
same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

The leaders job is to buy into the concept for quality concern, cast the vision and never
delegate the core value.

PRINCIPLE EIGHT:
Provide a safe, secure environment to share ideas.
A. People must be without fear in sharing their ideas.
B. We must have freedom to bring up ideas for change.
C. Leaders must be secure in receiving ideas; not taking them personally.
D. Ideas and idea givers must find a nonthreatening, welcoming environment.
E. You must distinguish between a positive critique and a complaining spirit.
Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of
counsellors there is safety.
PRINCIPLE NINE:
Build a team mindset to avoid departmental barriers.
A. We must be a single team instead of many little teams.
B. As churches departmentalize they tend to become departmentalized.
C. We must gather periodically to communicate and share ideas.
D. Some of the best insights are gained through anothers perspective.
E. Ministry leaders must always see the big picture.
Genesis 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one
language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which
they have imagined to do.

PRINCIPLE TEN:
Eliminate slogans and short-term goals.
A. This does not refer to outreach titles or building campaigns.
B. Avoid short-term thinking that provides temporary motivation or improvement.
C. Quality improvement is long-term, ongoing.
Habakkuk 2:3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak,
and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
PRINCIPLE ELEVEN:
Avoid numerical goals.
A. Money & worship service attendance shouldnt be our only goal.
B. When quality service becomes the main thing, growth will follow.
C. John 15 says if we abide in Christ, then well bear fruit.
D. The goal is not to bear fruit, but to abide in Christ.
Judges 7:4 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them
down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say
unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say
unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

Give people ownership.
A. Tear down barriers that keep people from developing a healthy pride.
B. Provide a freedom to do what it takes to add their personal touch.
C. Make sure people have the right attitude & exhibit teamwork.
1 Peter 2:9 - But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of
darkness into his marvellous light
John 21:17 - He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter
was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto
him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him,

PRINCIPLE THIRTEEN:
Vigorously educate people.
A. Training focuses on application; education emphasizes what we can learn.
B. Training without education tends to turn us into robots.
C. Education keeps us mentally fresh and exposes us to a wider range of information that
can help us improve our quality.
D. Continuing education is the key to staying on the cutting edge in a culture that is
changing constantly.

PRINCIPLE FOURTEEN:
Head into action.
A. We must first adopt the idea of a continual quality improvement plan, and then move
to implementing it.
B. Action must be the next step.
C. Each ministry needs a quality improvement action plan.
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own
selves.

WAYS TO BEGIN MEASURING QUALITY MINISTRY


1. Chart the last five years of church attendance, membership and finances.
2. Chart the last two or three years of growth for various ministries classes & events.
3. Provide quarterly congregational surveys that seek information in a different area.
4. Provide an ongoing, user-friendly system for new ideas.
5. Provide a recognition system for new ideas that suggest and are used for ministry
improvement.
6. Get anonymous feedback surveys from Sunday School class members, small groups,
seminars, special events, and periodically at worship services.
7. Reward newcomers with incentives for returning feedback questionnaires after their
visits.
8. Remember the difference between ministry ownership and possessiveness.

EXCELLENCE AS A PROCESS
I.

The Description of Excellence


A. The essence of excellence is more of a process than a product.
B. Christians grow as they utilize their spiritual gifts.
C. We grow when we learn how to serve in ministry.
D. Getting along with people is a priority in the Christian faith.

II.

The Dedication needed to Ensure Excellence


A. Too many churches have gotten by with lower standards.
B. We allow the family feel & relationship orientation to lessen quality.
C. God deserves the best.
D. Leaders are caretakers of the culture.
E. We must intentionally train, monitor, and cultivate quality.
F. Ministry leaders must lead without getting defensive.
G. Ministry leaders must not allow conflicts to fester.
H. Ministry leaders must always inspect what they expect.

III.

The Delicate Manner of Facilitating Excellence


A. We must not be watchdogs who are always policing people.
B. Accountability is different from watch dogging.
C. Accountability is mutual, prearranged & negotiated.

celebrating small & large advancements in quality?

DEVELOPING QUALITY TEAMS

I.

Quality improvement causes us to become perpetual students


As soon as you have mastered something, the market changes & competition
increases
If you let your guard down, you are in danger of becoming mediocre

The Process of Developing Teams


A. One persons absence should not stop an organization.
B. Quality improvement will not happen without teamwork.
C. People develop a sense of ownership with a team concept.
D. Two heads are better than one.
E. When people are involved in a process, better ideas are generated.
Luke 6:13 - And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose
twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Acts 6:3 - Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full
of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

II.

The Problem with Committees


A. Committee chairpersons are often the main planners.
B. Committees tend to be more passive; teams more active.
C. Committee members tend to be selective via election/selection.
D. Committees meet periodically, with or without new information.
E. Committees tend to defer action to others.
F. Committees tend toward maintaining and making incremental changes.

Acts 1: 23-26 - And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed

ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his
own place. 26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was

III.

The Power of Teams/Teamwork


A. Team members are selected for their involvement.
B. Teams meet as needed & only exist so long as there is a task to perform.
C. Teams tend to deploy the actions they develop.
D. Teams tend to be leadership oriented and can perform significant changes, if needed.
E. Allow people to become a part of the solution.
F. When people participate ideas are more likely to be implemented.
G. Teamwork gives people ownership.
H. People are looking for fulfillment and personal satisfaction.
I. People in the church are not afraid of being fired or demoted.
Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10 - Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their
labour. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when
he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
Acts 17:6 - And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the
rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither
also;

IV.

The Principles for Motivation


A. Vision and teaching must be present.
B. Loyalty tends to run deeper in the church than it does in the corporate world.
C. Committees are necessary for fiduciary responsibilities.

D. Dont meet just to be meeting.
E. Inflexibility is one of the worst of human failings.
F. Times have changed.
G. As people and times change, so do the organizations that naturally reflect them.
H. Antiquated methods cannot keep pace with drastic social changes.
Acts 16:17-23 - The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the
servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. 18 And this did
she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in
the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. 19 And
when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas,
and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, 20 And brought them to the
magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21 And teach
customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22 And
the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and

The Preference of Teams vs. Committees


A. Teams make quicker decisions.
B. Teams are less bureaucratic.
C. Teams thrive on tasks, not meetings.
D. Teams meet less and usually for shorter periods.
E. Teams focus more on participatory problem solving.
F. Teams invest time in building relationships.
G. Teams allow people to pray together.
H. Committees can be stiff and too businesslike.
Number 13:1, 2 - And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Send thou men, that they
may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of
their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

DEVELOPING TEAM MEMBERS AND LEADERS
Leadership is the ability to organize the spiritual gifts and limitations of others.

The Demand for developing team members and leaders.


A. It is a crucial part in building a five star church.
B. Quality suffers when you have the right people in the wrong places.
C. Developing quality teams has a lot to do with who is on the team to begin with and
most importantly, who is the team leader.
D. There is no such thing as a wrong person, only a wrong job.
E. Its the leaders job to match a ministry to the person
I Corinthians 12:8-12 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another
the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to
another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to
another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to
another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame

The intellectual capacity of a person should be determined for their role in ministry.
A. The High Attitude Quotient (AQ) Person

The AQ person works well under stress.

B. The Low Attitude Quotient Person


1. The Low AQ person is easily intimidated.

C. The Resource Quotient Person
1. Resources can include time, talent and treasure.
2. Talent has to do with a persons gifts.
3. Treasure has to do with a persons ability.
4. Time has to do with a persons availability.
D. The Energy Quotient Person
1. This is a high capacity person.
2. The EQ person can fulfill multiple roles inside and outside the church.
3. The low capacity person can be overwhelmed with more than a single ministry
role.

E. The Motivation Quotient Person
1. This person is highly motivated.
2. These people are willing to pay the price.
Jesus put a lot of stock in the High Motivation Quotient person.
Matthew 16:24 - Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let
him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Matthew 19:21 - Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast,
and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
Luke 9:60-62 - 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and

F. The Spiritually Quotient Person.


Leaders must be spiritually mature in the faith.
1 Timothy 3:6 - Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the

Again, leaders should be spiritually mature in the faith.

evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the

measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more

TEN THINGS WE OUGHT TO MEASURE AND EVALUATE


1. Ministries, Church Attendance and Finances
a. Flat or declining numbers in any ministry should be indicators to measure and
evaluate.
b. Every organization, every business must ask itself these questions:
1) Why are we in business?
2) Why do we exist?
3) Are we growing?
Numbers should not be a determining factor, but numbers do matter.
Matthew 14:21 - And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside
women and children.
Matthew 15:38 - And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and
children.
Acts 2:41 - Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day

a. A focus group that represents your church within your church can give you
invaluable information as to how people are thinking and feeling.
b. The goal of a focus group is not to persuade people to think a certain way, but
it is designed for leaders to find clarity for church ministry.
7. Suggestion Boxes
a. Providing a box where anonymous comments can be made as they occur.
b. Encourage ministry customers to share their ideas through the suggestion box.
8. Exit Interviews
a. Some of the most valuable information for ministry improvement is lost when
we do not ask people why they left the church.

b. We should never assume that the community knows whats going on in our
church.
10. Combined Research
a. Because so few congregations seriously take an organized approach to quality
improvement, a large number of instruments like these, modified for church
use, do not exist.
b. The old idea of not sharing ideas and tools will not work in the 21st century.
c. When the quality of other churches is raised, so is ours, and we will enhance
the kingdom of Almighty God.

These scriptures point to the fact that God deserves our very best when it comes to His
House. If He expected the very best in the Old Testament, what does He expect in the New
Testament? Lets notice what areas should be a matter of concern when we talk about
Quality in the Physical Arena.

A. When people visit our church they are looking at our signs, paint and landscaping.
B. How we look says a lot about how we feel about ourselves, and how we feel about
those who come to our church.

A story is told of three bricklayers who were asked what they were making. The first

Quality in the program arena has more to do with how we can more effectively minister to
people. As the church seeks quality in the program arena, we must focus on the following:
Worship, Ministry, Ministry Placement, Sunday School and Resources.

Worship
John 4:24 - God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in
truth.

Ministries
Ephesians 4:11-12 - And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,

A. Ministry is nothing less than dispensing Gods grace.
B. The ministry leaders job is to help people find the place of ministry that will best
utilize their gifts, skills and passions.
C. The warm-body approach to filling ministry positions is counter-productive and nonbiblical.
D. God never placed people in positions because they wanted to be there, He placed
them there because they were gifted enough to be there and thats what pleased Him.
E. When we compromise the quality of a ministry for the sake of an individual member,
we lower it.
For example, allowing Jane to sing a solo because shes done it for years, even
though shes not a strong singer, subjects people to mediocrity.
F. The ministry leaders job is to help Jane find a place to use her gifts where they will
be enhanced, such as with an ensemble or a choir that matches her ability level.
G. Ministry agreements become helpful tools in recruiting and holding ministry
members accountable.
H. A ministry agreement allows a person to know exactly what the ministry role entails
including to whom the person answers, fundamental skills required, time
commitments, and how much training will be provided by the church.
I. Our present ministries must reflect our core values and ministry niche as a whole.

Ministry Placement
1 Corinthians 12:18 - But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body,
as it hath pleased Him.
A. Our job is two-fold: creating quality ministries by developing quality ministry leaders
and developing people in their own gifts.

B. Our goal is not only to provide ministry events and services, but also to develop
people.
C. Our job has not been done until every willing member is placed in a ministry or an

Sunday School
2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not
to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
A. Most churches are notorious for recruiting a Sunday School teacher, tossing him or
her a Sunday School guide, and wishing them Gods best.
B. Just because someone has taught in the public sector, doesnt mean they qualify to
teach in the house of God. The public school might prioritize control and content,
while the church might prioritize care and process but you wont know until you
interview and monitor him or her in action.
C. Training must be a priority when we are seeking to please God in all of our teaching
endeavors.
D. Doctors, psychologists, nurses, teachers, sales people, and even chiefs are required
to attend continuing education classes. Do we do the same for our ministry
members?

Resources
Doctor, heres an ax and a butter knife. You can go ahead and perform this
appendectomy. The patient has a need, and were glad youre here. Now take the ax and
butter knife and get started.
A. We must make sure we have quality resources.
B. It is difficult to have a quality worship service and the sound system isnt working
well. You cant make good people sound good with a mediocre sound system.
Romans 10:14-17 - How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and
how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear
without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How
beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of
good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath
believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
C. Dingy lighting and shoddy dcor in the sanctuary do lower program quality.
D. Measuring our ministry effectiveness is very critical.

Living in obedience to Gods specific call for our church is our responsibility. God calls
no one to mediocrity. When were dealing with the eternal destiny of people and matters of
the heart, we must not do business as usual. Nothing is more important than the
fulfillment of the Great Commission.

Quality in the spiritual arena involves measuring spiritual growth, deciding what our core
values are and developing a variety of ways to measure growth.
We must not only track and evaluate how we treat people, our property, and our
programs, but we must also track and evaluate spiritual growth.
Jesus measured spiritual growth by reaching the lost. Churches should be in the business
of soul winning, not sheep swapping.
Matthew 15:24 - But He answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the
house of Israel.
Matthew 18:11 - For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

One of the ways churches can measure spiritual growth is by measuring how many
people came to know Jesus Christ.
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Other ways to measure spiritual growth are by measuring how many people are getting
involved in ministry and how many people are discovering their gifts.
In order to continue to be effective we must ask questions such as:

If not, what are we willing to do to become more effective?
The Bible uses many forms of measurements, including groups of people, offerings,
time and spiritual fruit.

All leaders are learners. The moment you stop learning, you stop leading

Cutting-edge churches now recognize that if they do the same, theyll soon become
dinosaurs.

When youre in a learning mode, you dont get overconfident or proud that youve
arrived.

Learning churches are known for reading, attending relevant conferences, brainstorming,
networking ideas and training,

Every church needs to have a strategy for learning and leadership. We need to be willing
to ask the what questions:

What is our role in the community?
What is the key to ministry effectiveness?

Any Church can be Five Star if it will only seek to please GOD in everything it does.
