1. Determine an expression for the steady state temperature distribution in the two dimensional
rectangular solid shown below:

2. A constant current of 200 amps is passed through a long wire that has an outer diameter of 10
mm and a resistance of 0.2 ohms/m. The thermal conductivity of the wire is 0.5 W/mK and
the temperature of the outer surface of the wire is known to be 150 C.
(a) Derive the differential equation for the steady state temperature distribution in the wire,
T(r).
(b) State the governing boundary conditions.
(c) Solve the differential equation for T(r).
(d) Calculate the centerline temperature T(0).
(10 marks)
3. Consider two infinitely parallel porous plates separated by a gap H. The two walls are
maintained at temperatures T0 and T1. The top wall moves with a constant velocity U.
Assume incompressible flow with constant properties for the fluid in between the walls. A
constant cross-flow at a velocity vw is set up across the porous walls. Solve for the flow field
and the temperature field, and obtain an expression for the heat transfer at the top wall.
Include viscous dissipation in the energy balance. Show that when the viscous dissipation is
neglected and Pr = 1, the velocity and temperature profiles could be made to look identical.
(20 marks)
4. Consider the Falkner-Skan transformation, applicable to non-similar boundary layer flows:
U
= U e x f ( x , ) ; = e y
x
a) Show that the above definition of stream function satisfies continuity.
b) Show that the u-momentum equation may be written as
f + f + 1 f2 = f fx f f x

Determine , , .
c) Verify by showing that the above equation reduces to Blasius equation when the edge
velocity Ue(x) = C (constant), and that it describes Hiemenz flow when the edge velocity
Ue = Bx, that is, it varies linearly with x.

5. Use the integral method to determine the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients for steady
incompressible flow of freestream temperature T over a flat plate at zero angle of attack,
with injection vw > 0, and constant wall temperature Tw. The Prandtl number Pr < 1.
Assume a third degree polynomial each for the normalized velocity and temperature profiles
in their respective boundary layers.

6. In the limit of creeping motion, velocities in natural convection are small, and the
convective terms are negligible when compared to the buoyancy and viscous terms. Using a
transformation such as
