Assessment of Group Processes

(Group Assignment)
Section D/ Team 9 :

a. In the space below, identify approaches your group tried that worked
well, and explain why they were effective.
ANSWER
Initially all the team members use to meet at one place to discuss the
project however we soon realized coordinating between 9 people
Hence we divided the team into smaller groups who were comfortable
working with each other
Hence every time we sat down to discuss the project only required a
member of this group
This approach drastically reduced the number of times the whole team
had to convene at one particular place
Also we made use of voting to resolve a number of issues, however we
did give the minority a fair chance to convince the majority

b. In the space below, identify approaches your group tried that did not
work well, and explain why they were ineffective.
ANSWER
In the group assignment on the Movie, our group divided different
sections of the movie to different subgroups to analyze. Although each
subgroup came up with their own interpretations of the movie sections
using the concepts of Behavioral sciences, there was a lack of
consistency and coherence when we collated our work.
This inconsistency was visible in our presentation, where it was evident
that different slides were prepared by different subgroups.
Also a bit of direct confrontation in situation where we could have
compromising, hurt the group a bit but the problem was soon
addressed.
Then the problem of punctuated equilibrium also cropped up as the
group members were not aware of the exact roles of each other. So
there was a big time gap in the first few meetings.

c. What are your learnings about managing group processes? What can
you do to improve contributions to a groups goals and processes that
may facilitate group work in the next term?
ANSWER
Groups of size>5 get very difficult to manage: We worked most
efficiently when teams brainstormed in groups of 4-5
Better Relationship Management can be used to get things done by
even the most reluctant of the group members. Being supportive and
respectful to the team members develops this relationship.
Persuasion and influencing skills are extremely important while working
in teams. So are communication skills
Under many cases groups work better than individuals (not only when
the task is big). The ideas generated in a group environment are much
more numerous than what a person can do alone
The more the conflict between ideas we had the better our learning
used to be. We resolved a lot of concepts of OB in the process.
Giving and receiving constructive feedback and taking them in the
correct stead brings improves the quality of work and benefits the
group members
