Top Three Purposes of AdNU Students for Using the Internet


The population used for this study is constituted by 100
conveniently sampled respondents, with an age range from 17 to 21
years old, who are all college students from Ateneo de Naga
University. They are all currently enrolled in the School Year:
2015-2016 and are from different colleges. The first item of the
survey asks the respondents to rank the objects according to how
they use the Internet frequently. Figure 1 shows the possible
intentions of AdNU students for using the internet. The graph
shows the comparison of the responses that are divided into 3
ranks.

Figure 1 shows that the top 1 intention of AdNU students for


using the internet is for education purposes, with a frequency of
37 (37% of the population), the top 2 intention, neglecting the
frequency of the top 1 purpose, is for communicating purposes,
having a frequency of 19 (19% of the total population), and the
top 3 purpose is for socializing purpose with a frequency of 19
(19%).

The Perceived Positive and Negative Effects of Internet Use to


AdNU Students
After the data interpretation, the responses of the research
population were categorized, arranged, and measured. Figure 2.1
below presents the enlisted categories of the positive effects
and Figure 2.2 below does the same for the negative effects.
Figure 2.1 reveals that there are 12 perceived positive
effects named 1. Studies, 2.Socializing, 3.Financial, 4.News
Updates, 5.Communication, 6.Access to Information, 7.Business
Purposes, 8.Convenience, 9.Saving, 10.Entertainment/Pleasure,

11. Time management, and 12.Quick access to work. On the other


hand, Figure 2.2 reveals that there are 15 perceived categories
of the negative effects of internet named 1.health hazards,
2.spiritual/personal deterioration, 3. waste of time,
4.distraction, 5.lack of learning, 6.waste of money/energy
7.annoyance, 8.corruption of devices, 9.addiction, 10.unwanted
access to sites or false information, 11.privacy issues, 12.
overdependence to the internet, 13. proneness to crime
14.emergence of social problems, 15.lack of motivation.

The Positive and Negative Effects of Internet Use to AdNU


Students
The

respondents

were

now

asked

to

give

the

effects

of

Internet usage to them, both in the positive and the negative


side. Figure 2.1 shows the listed possible positive effects and
figure 2.2 shows the possible negative effects, neglecting the
unrecognized or empty data from the data collection process, and
their frequencies.

Figure 2.1 reveals 12 possible positive effects of using the


Internet to AdNU students as perceived by them. Referring from
the

chart,

the

positive

effect

that

affects

most

of

the

respondents (59% of the total population) is that the Internet


has helped them in communicating with other people.

Moreover, Figure 2.2 shows 15 possible negative effects of


the Internet to the students of AdNU. 43% of the total population
states that the Internet using has caused them to waste their
time, it also may consume the time they have left for other
activities.
Based on the tables above, according to the respondents,
using

the

Internet

could

affect

the

user

more

negatively,

affecting their lives in many ways in the different aspects of


our lives.

Figure 3 shows the enlisted life aspects of every student

that might be affected by their Internet use. The frequencies of


every object that are measured in the process of data analysis
are shown and graphed for comparison.

Figure 3 shows that most of the respondents(69% of the


total population) life that revolves around their works and/or
studies is greatly affected by the use of the Internet. The chart
