Service Campaign 167B: Intermittent electrical door functions and/or A/C

performance
VIDA, Service Manager Bulletin 36-167A/B/C, Parts Bulletin 36-167B

DESCRIPTION:
Customers in S40/V50 vehicles may report that under certain conditions some electrical door
functions may not operate correctly. This may include power mirrors, power windows, central
locking and an incorrect reading from ambient temperature display indication in the DIM
(Driver's Information Module). If there is a problem with the temperature gauge, A/C
performance may be affected, causing the customer to complain about the climate system.
The root cause of these (intermittent) symptoms has been traced to be fretting corrosion of
the A-pillar connector. (Fretting corrosion is caused by the movement of two contact points,
eventually causing an oxide buildup and resulting in high contact resistance.) The photos
below show examples of fretting corrosion.

Fretting corrosion examples

Should a customer complain about the electrical door functions and you are unable to find the
root cause, inspect and apply low temperature grease as instructed below.
Typical DTCs found in the cars with the reported symptoms are:
CEM DE43
CEM DE45
CEM 6CXX (door lock feedback)
CEM DDXX (rear door LIN bus)
DDM E001
PDM E001
DTC = Diagnostic trouble code
CEM = Central electrical module
DDM = Driver's door module
PDM = Passenger's door module
SERVICE:
If the vehicle is identified as being eligible for Service campaign 167B in VRC2, apply low
temperature grease to both A-pillar connectors (64/41 and 64/43) according to the method
below.
Material
Low temperature grease (6 ml)

Quantity
2 (1 tube required per connector)

Part No.
1161761

Note: It is not necessary to clean the terminals. Disconnecting/reconnecting the connector

is enough to clean the contact surfaces. The application of the grease will prevent the
fretting corrosion from continuing.

3.
Greasing female terminals
Press the tip of the tube against each female
terminal and squeeze in low temperature
grease.
Note! It is important that low temperature
grease really gets into each female terminal
in the connector. Extra thoroughness is
required for the small terminals.
Plug in the connector to the door, unplug
again and repeat the greasing procedure for
each female terminal.
Fit the secondary catch in the connector.
Squeeze out the remaining grease onto the
part of the connector to be connected to the
door. Use your thumb to press excess
grease into the terminals.
Caution! Wash your hands thoroughly
immediately after working with grease.
Connect the connector.
Caution! Be careful so that the terminals are
not damaged.
Repeat the method on the other front door.
4.
Function check
Check operation of all the door locks,
windows and door electrical functions.
Clear DTCs.
