At the moment the water isn't working in the single room at the moment,
and there's only a double free.
Hmm, but I don't have to pay anything extra, right?
No, you won't have to pay any extra.
OK.
Great, you have room number 2. Your room is on the 3rd floor on the
left side.
Room 2, 3rd floor, on the left side. Hopefully I won't forget that...
And also please don't forget that smoking is forbidden within the Hotel.
You aren't allowed to smoke within your room.
It's OK, I'm a nonsmoker anyway.
Ah, OK
Great, room 3 on the 4th floor.
Sorry, no. It's room 2 on the 3rd floor. Wait a moment and I'll just
bring you there myself.
No, it's no problem. I can find the room. You don't need to take me
there.
Are you sure?
Yes
OK, good luck!

Vocabulary Phrase Usage

1. nderung (the change) is the noun based on "ndern" (to change)

2. Doppelzimmer = double room, Einzelzimmer = single room. These refer to rooms with a double bed
or a single bed.
3. Rauchverbot is based on the verb rauchen (to smoke) and das Verbot (ban, prohibition), so it
means a ban on smoking. Similarly, you may encounter words like Halteverbot (no stopping) or

Parkverbot (no parking),... I haven't seen a Schlafverbot (no sleeping) yet though.

Grammar Points
The focus of this lesson is muss nicht, darf nicht, braucht nicht, kann nicht
ich muss jetzt nicht mehr zahlen, oder?
"I don't have to pay any extra, do I?"

Since we taught you the verbs mssen and drfen, we should probably mention that the negative
versions don't work quite as you'd expect. The equivalent of must not is darf nicht, and the
equivalent of muss nicht actually means doesn't need to.

Here's the full list of equivalents.

er kann nicht = he can't

er braucht nicht = he need not
er muss nicht = he need not
er darf nicht = he must not, it is forbidden for him to...

Commit this to memory, or you may make some serious mistakes!

Cultural Insight
Culture: smoking
- approximately 27% of all Germans smoke, which is still a larger percentage than in the states,
even though the number is decreasing
- recently laws against smoking in restaurants and bars were passed, but it's a state-level issue, so
the laws are stricter in some parts of Germany than they are in others
- generally the laws argue in favor of non-smoking customers or waiters, who are subjected to
passive smoking at the workplace. This however means that if restaurants have outdoor seating
they can allow smokers there, or bars can re-define themselves as smoker clubs, which also
means that they will be able to permit smoking
- smoking is universally forbidden in public buildings, on public transport and at the workplace
