Hindi lang yung marunong maglaro kundi may leadership din an inspirational quote from Mr. Ramilito
Ramiro, the volleyball couch of Laiya National High School.
Over a decade, Laiyan volleyball team failed to seize the championship title from other school including
the Batangas Eastern Academy (BEA) or now the Batangas Eastern Academy caused by many aggressive and
self-asserting Players. Sports are not an easy track. Wikipedia defined sports as a form usually competitive
physical activity which through casual or organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical
ability. Sports intend to win.
Those lost for Laiyans is just the beginning.
Sir Ramil manages the training for the volleyball players (boys and girls) of Laiya. The training is held at the
new gymnasium of LNHS during the last period session subject of the students.
The players who undergo on the said training are the purpose of the training is for the upcoming competitions,
to build their awareness in using techniques and strategies in their respective games and to enhance their
knowledge and capabilities in performing their games.
Sir Ramil is the new teacher of Laiya NHS from Joseph Marello Institute (JMI) who serves as the MAPEH
instructor thats why it is not hard for him to teach the players these basics techniques.
Sa isang grupo kasi lagi namang dapat may mag-lead, siya yung team captain pero kung wala yun may
malaking kulang, said Sir Ramil.
Masaya kasi yun nga new friends sa ibang year tsaka na-iishare namin ang mga alam naming sa

The event was attended by Mrs. Josephine D. Rosales, Principal II of Laiya National High School, Mr.

Last year, proceeds from the same project were spent for the training of teachers and the upgrading
of LNHSs TLE facilities.

supporting the K-12 Plus Project in our school, expressed Mrs. Rosales.

In fairness

After China defeated Gilas Pilipinas(Philippines representative on FIBA Asia), rumors were spread
throughout social media that the game was played with un-appropriate and unfair decisions from the
referee.
According to sports analysts there are some points were the referee had the wrong decisions.
After the game, Filipinos showed their support to the Phl Basketball team eventhough they were a little
bit confused about the final outcome of the game between China and Philippines in the finals.
As a good side of their game, FIBA Asia mentioned the continuous improvement of Gilas Pilipinas,
impressed with the games of Team Phl in the Jones Cup and the MVP Cup.
But still this was a very big dilemma our team encountered because as what team members said, it was
Chinas team who started to hurt Phl players.
The battle started to blow up when players from the same group started to hurt everyone physically in
the game.
Even netizens went on an uproar and raged about this Lutong Macao-- said to be in favor of China
from the start.
But Gilas Pilipinas keeps on practicing and counting positive thoughts, pursuing their dreams and their
goal which is to bring pride to Filipinos.
We learn through experiences. And keeping composure despite the worlds treacheries is one of those.
There are possibilities and chances given to Filipinos athletes and we will not give up until the title is in
our hands.

5 Ways on How to Become an

Environmental Savior
Mrs. Reschelle S. Umali, Adviser

Much has been said about environmental changes that we are experiencing. Some blame it on the western

countries for being way too capitalists; the others refuse to see whats going on and just choose to resort to a
more passive explanation, that being, change is the only constant thing in this world.
Suffice it to say that we are all doomed eventually.
In lieu of recent events around the globe and beyond- the ozone layer depletion, greenhouse whatnots, the
occurrence of how many hurricanes devastating countries and lives- it has been constantly advocated that we
conserve and save Mother Earth in any way that we can. Here in the municipality of San Juan, environment
conservation has been reduced merely within few barangay and sitios; it is equated to an award of some
kind. Needless to say, some of us protect the environment only because a price awaits for the cleanest, most
beautiful city, barangay, even street or sitio.
Again, we are all doomed!
1.Recycle
- sounds way
elementary
but yes,
recycling
does work.
Separate the
recyclable materials from the
worm- inducing, soil- thriving
trash (biodegradable and nonbiodegradable). Provide one
trash bin for each, and train
every member of the household
to recycle. Some companies use
recycled materials, like paper,
and they earn big bucks for using
such. One mans trash is anothers
treasure.

2.
Conserve- energy conservation goes a
long way. Some may not believe this. They would
rather speed up and beat the traffic light, but the
more gas a car burns, the more carbon monoxide
is released in air, thus causing pollution. Turning
off a light when not in use is an easy way to
conserve energy and in reducing the kilowatt
consumption. Another way is to make sure that there are no leaky
faucets in the house or electrical jumpers.

4.
Vigilance- to be vigilant is
to be a keen observer, and observation is in
order because not everybody takes the time
to do so. It is only through observation that
we can figure out the trends of the climate,
the needs of Mother Earth and what is trying
to tell us. Science is not confined
to the exact, the precision of
measurements and the like.
Although the precision takes
time, we can always observe.

3.
the

Abstinence-this may not seem easy but its worth

try. Abstain from using technological devices that
may seem hazardous or can produce
massive and harmful effects. Life
is not a popularity contest; it doesnt
matter if you dont own the most advance
technological device. You wont need it
when youre dead.

5. Plant- quite ordinary but

a plant can save your life. Soil
erosion happens because there are
no trees to stand as guard when
there are heavy floods and rains.
We learned it the hard way when the tragedy happened,
killing thousands of innocent people. What we can do is
plant in our backyard, and if we dont have a backyard, we
can do it in our neighborhood. Even a small plant on a pot
inside the house helps minimize dust and dirt. Plants filter
the dirt through their leaves, and they produce oxygen.

If
big boys
have
cock
fighting, small ones have spider
fighting.
Students of Laiya National
High School were once obsessed
with this tiny crawling creature.
They are so obsessed that they
spend their allowance in buying
materials for the house of
their pet. Some who cannot
afford to buy capitalize on their
creativity to give this creature
the artificial environment it
needed for conditioning. Yes,
conditioning because this pet
is meant for spider fighting. It
has to be given food. It has to
be given time to rest and sleep.
It has to be exposed to other
spiders to prepare it for fighting.
Just like cockfighting, money
is at stake. Students meet during
break time. At times, students
skip classes and meet at hidden
places in the campus for spider
fighting. Game will start when
enough students swarm in one
area. They carrry with them
their bets. When one spider
finds its match in terms of size
and weight, the fight is on. Two
spiders will position themselves
in one stick such as barbecue
stick. The aim is to paralyze the

opponent through its neurotic

venom. Whoever bites first
has the chance to paralyze its
opponent. Once the opponent
grapples, the victor wraps its
opponent in silk. A spider has
won. More than that, the handler
of spider has won a handful of
money.
Spiders are eight-legged
animals that belong to Class
Arachnida. Scorpions, ticks and
mites are among the animals that
belong to the same class. Pitik
is just one of the many species
of spiders. This phenomenal
spider is also known as tagalog,
sibat and sungab. Pitik is actually
a species known as Neoscona
punctigera. This species belongs
to family Araneidae, the third
largest group of spiders. It is
usually found in countries of
Asia such as the Philippines.
Filipinos usually hunt them
in the gardens, fields and forests
at night. This is because they
often make their spiral wheelshaped web at night which they
use for trapping food. This web
easily reflects the artificial lights
of huntsmen; giving them easy
access for hunting. Students
of LNHS are among the many
Filipinos who spend their nights
searching for this species of

spider instead of searching for

answers to their homeworks.
However, students should
realize that spiders are part of
an ecosystem. Once we remove
them from their habitat, we
alter the balance of ecosystem.
They are meant to be in their
natural habitat.
Let us allow
them live

them to be.

SALt: a Batanguea lights up

homes... and hearts

Jeric Umali
It sounds amazing in several levels. First, it isnt every day that we hear of lighting devices that has saltwater
for its fuel. Second, it isnt every day that we hear of our fellow Batangueos/as making news in the scientific
and technological field. Or maybe not as huge as Engr. Aisa Mijeno (who hails from Lipa) has done lately when
she sat with no less than the president of the Philippiness staunchest ally, Pres. Barack Obama and Chinas
richest entrepreneur, Jack Ma during this years APEC Conference in Manila.
The Invention
Technically, it is wrong to say that Engr. Mijenos
Sustainable Alternative Light (SALt) device works
on salt water alone. As she explains in their website,
SALt relies in the same technology used in making
batteries: the principle of the Galvanic cell discovered
by Italian scientist Luigi Galvani over 200 years ago
in the 1780s.
So how exactly does it work? Well, it works when
an electrode is burned in an electrolyte solution of
salt and water. The said electrode is an anode which
gives off electrons when dipped in the solution. The
device also boasts of being able to charge phone
batteries.
The Road Ahead
Engr. Mijenos achievement has a long, long
road way ahead of it before it gets truly employed
in our homes. As mentioned, she faces the challenge
of making the soluble electrodes available in
the market at the lowest price. Moreover, the
manufacturing of this anode may prove contributory
to adversities in nature due to its being a processed
metal and will naturally have a carbon imprint in its
production.
Anyhow, Mijenos invention makes us hopeful for
less dependence on the main grids for our lighting
needs. Imagine how much we can save with our
lights being generated by saltwater, or the electrodes
you dissolve in them.

The Challenges
But of course, the fame SALt has now is nothing
but the beginning of a longer story. As with most
startup inventions, the common problem for the
projects proliferation into the general market burns
down to funding. Engr. Mijeno acknowledged this
in her encounter with Obama and Ma in the APEC
Conference, Nov 17.
The real problem is that the electrodes you burn
in the salt solution eventually gets, well, burned and
would have to be replaced. There lies then Engr.
Mijenos greatest challenge: the mass- pro duc tion
of the said electrode so it
would be readily available
in the
marketmuch like the
your usual AA batteries.
And
of course, selling it

To pay or not to pay?

WeTransfer (Android/iOS). If you

need to want to unload a huge set of photos
and videos at once, give WeTransfer a try. This
simple free app lets you upload up to 10GB in
one go and send a link to download your files
via email, no login necessary.
This is very convenient when you need to send files to someone
remotely. Plus, it lets you email multiple recipients at once and
attach a message as well.
All you need to do is select the images and video clips you want
to send, add an email address and WeTransfer will begin uploading
your files. Youll need to keep it connected and running until your
upload completes, but you can pause and resume the action if
necessary.
On iOS, you can drag down on the photo grid screen to select a
different album of images to upload, tap and hold to preview them
and double-tap to select multiple images.
If youre on Android, you can tap and hold to preview images
and swipe with two fingers to scroll between months.
You can also send other file types on Android locate them in
your file browser or another app and select WeTransfer in the Share
menu to send it via email instantly.
Your uploads are available to your recipients for up to seven
days, after which they expire. Subscribing to WeTransfers Plus
plan, priced at $10 a month, keeps your files alive for as long as you
like. You can log in by tapping and holding on the logo in the app.

Superbeam (Android/
iOS) No internet connection? No
problem. Superbeam for Android
and iOS uses Wi-Fi Direct technology
to send files between devices, and it
works like a charm.
Fire up the app on two devices and
you can trade files just by scanning
an on-screen QR code or pairing
them over NFC. As iOS restricts
file management to the camera roll,
youll only be able to share photos
and video from your iPhone or iPad.
On Android, you can share images,
music, apps, documents and even
contacts.
Whats neat about Superbeam is
that you can push unsupported files
to an iOS device (like an MP3 file)
and it will remain available for you to
save to your cloud storage accounts,
send to others.
Superbeam also offers a desktop
app for quick file transfers on
premium.

These apps may all be classsified under Near Field Communication

(NFC). Many smartphones come with default NFCs. Just like
Bluetooth and WiFi, and all manner of other wireless signals, NFC
works by sending info over radio waves. NFC transfers are usually
faster and easier to perform than most other transfer methods.
Active devices are able to both send and receive data. But despite
the age of NFC, it hasnt yet become the norm for all smartphones.

While we are busy

Mother Nature the protection

While it is not yet late, let us
act. The least thing that we can
do is to plant trees. We should

Where? In any vacant space that
we can see.

Military came to our

community on August 30 and

leaders, Ronel Campus, Lumad
citizen stated.
Concerns about the victims
human rights were raised after
alleged AFP power abuses.
Allegedly, the killings of three
Lumad leaders, Dionel Campus,
Emoc Samarca, Director of
Alternative Learning Center
for Agricultural and Livelihood
Development
(ALCADIV)
School, and Datu Bello Sinzo of
Sitio Han Ayan commenced
when the soldiers found a book
by New Peoples Army (NPA)

and writings opposing the

governments K-12 program.
Han-Ayan
Sitio Han-Ayan itself had been
moved to an evacuation center
in Tandag City to avoid further
threats of abuse from the AFP.
Accusation of rape had also
been raised from the Lumad
Camps against two soldiers.
The three accused soldiers
are currently under the custody
of the Armys 10th Infantry
Division in Davao City while the
investigation is still on-going in
connection with the rape of a
14-year-old Lumad girl in Davao
del Norte.

According to Sen. Teofisto

Guingona III, the immediate
solution to the Lumad killings
would to be to disarm the
paramilitary groups.
Our engagement with the
communities are only for regular
security operation, Colonel
Isidro Purisima, Commanding
Officer of the 402nd Infantry
Brigade said.
Lumad groups that travelled
to the metro to protest were
accommodated
by
some
universities.
They later staged protests
during the conduct of the APEC
meeting.

Exploring, exploiting

Of late, our newsfeeds have

gotten flooded with updates on
mans extraterrestrial exploits.
First, the Apollo Mission flew
past Pluto after some decades of
making its way out of the Solar
System. Then, there was NASAs
bold announcement of water on
Mars, fuelling speculation of life,
or whatever remained of it on the
Red Planet.
While these mark another
milestone for man and his
unquestionable intellect, doesnt
it also sound ingrate for us to
celebrate other planets and go
about exploiting our own?
Look around, observe the
surrounding and notice the
difference between the Earth as it
was merely decades ago and what
it is now.
And who else is there to blame?

Humans. Could the Wachowski

Brothers had been right along
when they compared man to a
virus whose nature is to destroy
its host? And that our search for
the possibility of life in other
planets is a recognition of that
unstoppably destructive nature?
That our species is just searching
for another planet to destroy?
We have the courage to think of
exploring other planet while in the
first place we cant even take care of
our own planet first.
Some people are busy trying to
predict different outcomes when
they reach other planet while
others are busy destroying the
nature we have.
Where is the gold in having
such wonderful experiences after
reaching the other planet if we
would have nowhere to live after?

We can say that reaching them

might help us to conclude what
else we need to improve on our
own land. The question: will we
still have something to improve?
I might say were already losing it.
Wake Up. Assure us a sustainable
future.
For what gain is there in
conquering the world and losing
ourselves?
Searching different ways to
explore, planning steps to reach
those planets, and at the same time
destroying our own planet simply
does not make sense.
Were doing something that
is obviously the reason why nature
hate us.
Plant more trees, not more crisis.
Live a happy life, not leave happy
life. Return to nature, dont wait for
its vengeance.

Syrian crisis worsens with French

retaliation vs. Daesch
Compiled by Joenathan Carpio

What started out as a democratic protest against the Syrian government has turned out to become
modern historys worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War, according to the United
Nations, as the country bears the brunt of retaliatory attacks from France and Russia against the Islamic
State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Plugged in

There is a revolution going on in Laiya NHS today. That is clearly seen in the employment of various
technological implements such as televisions, computers, and online educational platforms.
First, vaarious alumni have donated LED TVs for classrooms this year. Then, teachers upgraded their
presentation skills using slideshows. And most recently, some some have also started going to quipper.
com, an online educational gamified platform with their students.
These innovations reflect DepEds thrust for 21st Century education, require a broader perspective on
the role of technology to pedagogy, and call out for improvements in the technological know-how of both
teachers and students.
This move comes as a welcome adjustment to the technologically-oriented learning styles and habits
of todays students
As well this opening up towards the employment of technology in the classroom points to .adjustments
in existing rules that totally ban the use of gadgets necessary in schools.
It is good that the Guidance Office has issued suggestions on the proper and responsible use of these
gadgets. There is of course the continued call not to abuse this provision by using gadgets unnecessarily
during class hours, or for purposes other than academic ones.
Not only does this move require these shifts in opinion. It also calls for the heightened cooperation
between the school and its stakeholders for further improvements on the schools electrical facilities. After
all, installing televisions or any other technological implements in the classrooms will be in vain should
we fail to address the need to reinforce the schools electrical backbones.
Necessarily, integrating technology in the classroom requires also the advancement in teachers
technological know-how.
Indeed, starting the task of integrating technology in the classroom is a monumental leap forward for
the school. May we benefit greatly from this.

France would battle Isis without

a respite, without a truce...It is
not a question of containing but
of destroying this organization,
said French President Francois
Hollande in his address to the
French Parliament after the fatal
Paris attacks that saw the death
of more than 130 people.
Roots of Conflict

The conflict in Syria
started out when the armed
forces of President Bashar alAssad responded violently to
pro-democracy protesters in
2011, opening fire on them and
triggering a public outrage that
escalated to massive protests for
Assads resignation.

Violence
escalated
further and fragmented the
country as various factions
wrestled with government forces
for control of cities and the
countryside.
Today, at least seven forces
including Russia and ISIS hold
sway in the fragmented state.
Humanitarian Crisis

The civil war has
displaced half of the countrys
pre-war 22-million population,
prompting mass migrations
usually to neighboring countries
Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey

but extending even to Southeast

Asia.
In
connection,
the Philippine government
expressed openness to serving
as a temporary destination for
Syrian refugees waiting to be
accepted in other host countries.
While we will abide by our
commitments as a signatory
to the UN Convention on
refugees, we should also take
into account our own resources
and capabilities, considering we
are still in the rehabilitation stage
from the aftermath of Typhoon
Yolanda, Foreign Affairs Charles
Jose said.
Many Syrians risk life to
cross to Europe for resettlement,
most of them going through the
borders of Greece.
Relief Efforts
In December 2014, the UN
launched an appeal for $8.4bn
(5.6bn) to provide help to 18
million Syrians.
A report published by the
UN in March 2015 estimated
the total economic loss since
the start of the conflict was
$202bn and that four in every
five Syrians were now living in
poverty - 30% of them in abject
poverty. Syrias education, health

and social welfare systems are

also in a state of collapse.
UN Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon says the organisations
long-term strategic objective
remains a political solution based
on the Geneva Communique.
The UN special envoy Staffan
de Mistura has also proposed
establishing a series of freeze
zones, where local ceasefires
would be negotiated to allow
aid deliveries in besieged areas.
But his attempt to broker a truce
in March 2015 was rejected by
rebels in the city, who feared
the government would use it to
redeploy its forces elsewhere.

SSG relaunches
Room of
Week tilt
Ron Louis L. de Chavez

Slowly but surely

Four hundred forty students are expected to study Senior High at Laiya National High School (LNHS).
The implementation of the K-12 Curriculum Program means that the public schools would have to find
extra classrooms, restrooms, teachers and textbooks to accommodate the students. Is LNHS K-12 ready?
In Implementing the K-12 program, the school need more classrooms and buildings that is ready to use
and if not the school must renovate the old establishments so that the students can still use it.
The construction of the new classrooms to be used for Grade 11 is still ongoing and expected to be finish
on April 2016 which is obviously ready to accompany the first batch of G-11 on June 2016.
In terms of textbooks, unfortunately some year levels are still waiting to have the textbooks so that
they will not have to go to the computer shops and print the whole module just to have the source of the
everyday lessons.
All over the Philippines, there is a problem on where are we going to get the teachers that will teach
G11 and G12.
Luckily, the school has the suited teachers to teach technical Vocational Course (TVC) that are certified
National Certificate II (NCII) holder and still hiring teachers that are qualified to teach Academic courses.
In implementing the K-12 Curriculum Program, the school will encounter problems that might ruin
its reputation and bring it down but with the help of the government, Technical Education and Social
Development Authority (TESDA), Association of Laiya Resorts Owner (ALRO), Local Government Units
(NGU), and other stakeholders such as the Sequa, German Cooperation, and the Philippine Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, Inc., Laiya NHS is going slowly, but surely.

Due to its success last year, the

Supreme Student Government
re- launched the solid waste
management program and
contests.
Nakita ng lahat ang nagiging
epekto ng project na ito.
Nagkaroon ng disiplina ang
mga mag-aaral, nagkaroon sila
ng pagkukusang maglinis sa
kagustuhang hindi mapahiya
ang kanilang mga teacher at
mismong ang kanilang section.
Mas nagiging maganda at
maaliwalas sa tingin ang
kabuuan ng ating paaralan kaya
naman ipinagpatuloy at lalo
pa itong pinagbubuti ngayong
taon, said Mrs. Maribel D.
Palatan, SSG Adviser.
However, the SSG modified
last years mechanics for the
contest. This, year, the scores
that will be given to the Gulayan
sa Paaralan (GsP) will be scored
separately from the cleanliness
of the classroom itself. The
awarding ceremony will be held
every Monday morning due to
the flag raising ceremony for the
best classrooms and every end
of the month for the garden.
Based on Republic Act 9003,
also known as The Ecological
Solid Waste Management Act
of 200, which mandated the
segregation of waste.

Twenty-three students from

10.
According to Mrs. Shirley F.

this program
is for those students who are
malnourished and was lacked of
proper guidance in their eating
habits. .
Some of them are malnourished
because they are not eating their
lunch.
Thirty-five percent of the
Canteens fund is allotted for the

feeding program to help those

malnourished students reached
their normal weight.
Ito makakatulong sa mga magaaral na hindi wasto ang timbang
o walang sapat na perang pambili
ng pagkain, Mrs. Shirley F. De
Torres said.
The school is pursuing this
project to lessen the percentage
of malnourished students in
the school campus and also to
introduce healthy lifestyle.

Fate of heroes
The transparency and credibility
of the Bureau of Custom (BOC)
is being criticized because of
the issue about the inspections
and opening of the balikbayan
boxes that the overseas Filipino
workers (OFW) sent to their
relatives in the country.
It is okay to open the balikbayan
boxes to ensure that it will not be
used in smuggling especially in
illegal transport of drugs
But it means tampering
the privacy of the personal
belongings thats inside the boxes
instead of focusing to catch big
time smugglers, the BOC focus
on opening balikbayan boxes
and busy adding tariffs to the
things that exceed in quality and
prize.
It is important to open the
balikbayan boxes to check if it
contain items that are taxable
especially the luxury items that
they bought at the shopping
malls abroad.
But if the items are declared
and it has a packing list and
invoice, there would be no need
to the BOC inspectors to open it.
Lets say the BOC has the right
to inspect the balikbayan boxes
but they dont have to tamper the

things that inside if:

Even if they see luxury items
why dont they just let it. It is
the fruit of the hardship that the
OFWs wanted to give to their
families. It is owned by them and
for me the BOC dont have the
right to place tax and tariffs in it.
In fact the OFWs help our
economy grow through the
money that they sent to the
country. I think their moneys
tax is enough
It is such a crucial thing that
even the items that they almost
died to buy is being taxable and
tampered by corrupt officials.
I am against the opening of the
balikbayan boxes and the added
tax on the luxury items that the
OFW sent. They really work hard
to feed and earn money for their
family. They used up all their
time just to sustain their familys
needs.
If we could not end it today,
when? If the government really
treasures the OFWs they must
take bigger steps to end their
suffering.
I am against the opening of the
balikbayan boxes and the added
tax on the luxury items that the
OFW sent.

Face-off:
Yaya Dub vs. Pastillas Girl
Mia Villanueva

Million of tweets. High ratings. Fandoms. Solid viewers. These are all scattered over the
online world. And it does not stop there. The world stops in the middle of the day just
to watch something which is really persuasive. The scene is like Manny Pacquiaos big
fight.
Eveyone
awaits for the
next chapter of
their stories.
Everyone
fights for the
better one
- Aldub or
Pastillas Girl.
Aldub
loveteam
was first
to make
noise in
the showbiz industry. Yaya
Dub suddenly rocked the house of Eat
Bulaga when she started as Lola
ni Doras nanny. Here how it goes
- she saw Alden Richards on a tv
screen then suddenly she kept
quiet then she started to wave
her hands behind her face now
it is called pabebe wave.
And the next thing we knew,
they are celebrating their weeksaries and monthsaries. Their
love story continues up to this
day adding extra delight and
flavors to the lunch meal of the
viewers.
Aldub is a short version for
Alden Richards and Yaya Dub.
The character of Yaya Dub is

well played by Maine Mendoza

the dubsmash queen of youtube. With their famous pabebe
wave plus their hit lines such as
Mainenamahal kita, MaAlden
kita, and Aldub You, they
conquer the country as they never expect it to be. For months,
EatBulaga has attained ratings
they have never achieved before.
Alden Richards suddenly became the best topping to GMA
7s projects and advertisements.
Thanks to Yaya Dub.
On the other network, Pastillas Girl is walking her way to
stardom too. In real life, she is
Angelica Jane Yap, another youtube sensation. Her viral video
How to Make Pastillas, gave
way for her popularity.The video
shows the procedures in cooking
pastillas but with a twist! She
lightened it up with hugot and
patama quotes to her ex-boyfriend.
Now Angelica has her own segment, Nasaan ka Mr. Pastillas?,
on Its Showtime. In her segment,
she is looking for the Mr. Right
of her life, together with Vice
Ganda. Evan, Jess, Topher and
Richard - four of the luckiest
suitors of Miss Pastillas - all hope
for Pastillas Girls heart.
From time to time, we heard

students talking about them; replaying the stories they watched

during the weekend. Some are
actually arguing as to who or
which is better. Thus, we did our
own survey. The big question is
Aldub or Pastillas Girl?
We gathered information from
491 students.A total of 290 voted for YayaDub. This comprised
54% of the total students who
voted. The rest, 201 students,
voted for Pastillas Girl. Aldub
won by 18%.
I choose Yaya Dub because
she is obedient to her three Lolas
and their love team has a chemistry, said Shanelle Kate Samarita,
G7 Shakespeare.
On the other hand, Michelle
De Chavez of G8-Rizal defended
that Pastillas Girl
can relate well with
people because of
her love story. I
hope she will find
her Mr. Pastillas
soon.
Both stories
have their own
values and lessons to share. That
counts more than
the ratings
and number
of votes.

Lets settle what we can

Our country has been facing a huge problem regarding on its islands on the South China Sea. And
this case had already settled a hearing on The Hague, which is an international court for all countries. But
China insisted on the results of it for the result confederates Philippines.
The ruined relationship of China and Philippines started when China suddenly declared that
Scarborough Shoal and Spratlys Islands are all entitled to them. Distressed, our country asserted its rights
for its very obvious that the said islands belongs to the Philippines. The distance of the islands from the
two countries only shows that these two islands belong to us. Thus, China had shown an old copy of their
map showing that they owned Scarborough shoal and Spratlys Islands even from the beginning. But
Philippines relies on the provisions of international law, namely the UNCLOS.
It became controversial when China had started to scout around the said islands, they started to attack
some Philippines vessel and to throw water bomb on some small boats. They even started to pile sand on
the South China Sea resulting to form some islets on the region.
Due to these, the Philippine government decided to consult at the international courtThe Hague. And
luckily, Hague accepted our countrys case.
Hagues hearing has been helpful, though China differed on this decision, at least we all know that
even the international court sticks with us. But for now, we, Filipinos, what we want is only the truth and
nothing but the truth.
Be brave, take risk. We should fight for our own land.

That a student should ask
Epi Quizon why his character
Apolinario Mabini in the film
Heneral Luna may only
be described in one word:
outrageous.
Yes, outrageous: those
things you can laugh at and
tremendously hate at the same
time.
Several things come up with
this incident, and some blamethrowing too.
People start looking at
teachers for explanation on the
horrendousness of the event.

RIP, Mabini

I do not know in other parts

of the Philippines, but as far as
Laiya Elementary and National
High School are concerned, I do
remember my teachers telling us
about Mabini.
In fact, there is a yearly
celebration of his life and works
whenever his birthday comes
around in July.
And then we turn to the
ourselves, as the youth of this
land. How have we come to this?
An English teacher once told
us about how short-sighted the
collective memory of Filipinos

short., this ignorant.
There is so much to remember,
in fact, search for in the artwork
in the making known as the
Filipino Nation.
And we who are supposed
to continue the task of building
seemingly have forgotten the
foundations upon which we
should build.
What have we been up to?
How have we heeded this call of
building upon the identity fought
for by our forefathers-- Mabini,
one of those in the forefront?

In relation to the upcoming Senior High School (SHS), the Laiya NHS library underwent a
renovation. LNHS students showed their appreciation to these changes through their comments
regarding it.

years.

In the western part of Laiya National High School (LNHS) stand three classrooms. These three
are collectively known as the Tanco Building. It is the first building built in LNHS in the year 1972.
The building was named after its donor, Mr. Arturo A. Tanco Jr. For 13 years (1971 1984), he
served as the Agriculture Minister of the Philippines. He was also the President of the World
Food Council of the United Nations in the year 1997 to 1981. His advocacy in improving our
countrys economy and production of crops made him closer to Filipino farmers. As a technocrat,
he helped small towns in improving their crop production through introduction of new farming
techniques. And his passion reached the small place of Laiya; not in farming aspect, but in education.
For decades, Tanco Building was a home to forty three batches. It was a witness to the
transformation and learning of thousands of students. Memories were webbed in the three classrooms
achievement and defeat; laughter and tears; friendships and puppy loves; attachments and letting
go. More than anything else, it has given students the much needed education for their future.
It was actually our first home in Laiya National High School. It was our classroom when we were in
first year. The classroom allowed me to meet new friends who are still my friends up to this day. One of
my happiest days in that classroom was our Christmas party, said Julius Lucero, Batch 2004 graduate.
However, everything comes
to an end. It is a law of nature.
Strong typhoons and slightly felt
earthquakes slowly deteriorated
the building. Acid rain hollowed
out its roof. Its walls and
foundation were weathered,
making it weak and unsuitable
as students shelter in school.
Thus, demolition is necessary.
Just like the students who housed
in Tanco building, it will soon be
gone, too. It will be replaced by a
new one. Its photograph will only
be seen in the book of history of
LNHS. It will be nothing but a
piece of history, but its contribution
to students will remain
permanent and indestructible.

Tele Review. On the Wings of Love:

Not your typical mushy Telenovela
Pag mahal ka, babalikan ka.
Everyone can relate very
well to this famous line from
a trending telenovela On the
Wings of Love; more popularly
known as OTWOL.
OTWOL is being aired in
ABS-CBN every week nights.
It is starred by a well-known
love team called Jadine James
Reid and Nadine Lustre. James
plays the strong, simple and
romantic character of Clark
Medina. Nadine is the funny,
determined and loving Leah
Olivar.
The two characters met
in San Francisco, USA. Leah
works as a research assistant
while Clark works as a hotel
bellboy. As they were fulfilling
their American dream, destiny
finds its way for the two to meet
and fell in love with each
other.
For their family, Leah
and Clark conquer all
including the burdens
they have in their
work and the
loneliness of
being far from
their family,
saving each dollar
for their familys
future. They did not lose any
hope. Instead, they strive and
work hard. They capitalize on
their family as their strength to

Ithan Grayne Jumuad

wake up each morning and to

keep on working.
The new time zone brought
not just hangover and stress but
lots of problems and surprises.
Their dream lead them
to a dilemma which lead
the two characters to a very
unpredictable scene when Leah
asks for Clarks hand just for her
green card.
Then everything messed up
- their family , their lives, their
plans, their goals. Even their
lives unfolded. They did not
expect to fell in love with each
other.
This love was like a bean
starting to have stalks, leaves
and stems. It then released
fruit but it was not as sweet as
everyone expects it to be. This
fruit gave bitterness when Albie
Casio as

Jiggs found out that his ex-

girlfriend (Leah) was courted by

his cousin (Clark).
Their world continued to
turn upside down. Aside from
the twist, the telenovela is close
to the heart of public viewers
because of the Filipino values
portrayed by the characters.
Aside from the family
values, Juan Miguel Severo add
theatrical value to the telenovela.
He is a spoken word poet.
His poems clearly express the
emotions and feelings of each
character. He has hugot lines
every viewers can easily relate
with. He attracts everybodys
ears as he throw his first line.
It is very rare for a teleserye to
incorporate literature in their
episodes. That is what makes it
unique.
Being an OTWOLISTA
is being close to the reality.
Watching OTWOL is like
watching Filipinos in general.
Indeed, it is a good
night hobby.

Kumusta, Laiya National High

School? Isa ako sa mga naging
produkto mo.
At miss na miss na kita.
Apat na taon din akong
nagpaikot-ikot sa apat na sulok
ng paaralan. Masaya, di ko
makakalimutan. Ang Laiyan?
Malaki ang naging kontribusyon
niya sa kung anong narating
ko sa buhay ko. Dati, wala
naman akong balak magsulat.
Nagsusulat lang ako kapag
kailangan sa subject o project.
Hanggang sa nabigyan ako ng
pagkakataong
makapagsulat
para sa pahayagan ng paaralan.
Masarap sa pakiramdam.
Nakakatuwa. Nakilala ako,
maraming nakabasa ng mga
isinulat ko. Hanggang sa

dumating ang graduation. Isa

sa nakakalungkot na pangyayari
sa buhay ko yung iwan ko ang
paaralan na to at ang mga
taong tumulong sakin kung
paano bumuo ng kwento, kung
paano magpakilig ng mga
tao sa classroom, kung paano
magpaiyak ng mga guro dahil
lang sa mga sinulat ko.
Masyadong memorable ang
Laiya para sakin. Dito ako
nagsimulang matutong magsulat
ng mula sa puso. Gusto ko lang
magpasalamat. Kung hindi dahil
kay Maam Lanie noon, wala
siguro ngayon ang Trapped
With You. Isa sa kwentong
natapos kong maisulat matapos
kong makagraduate ng college.
Isang kwentong nakilala sa

Wattpad at di kalaunan ay
nagkaron ako ng pagkakataon na
i-self-publish sa tulong ng mga
kaibigan ko rin sa Wattpad.
Masaya ako. Na tuwing
titingnan ko yung librong iyon
sa bookshelf ko, bumabalik
sa gunita ko ang mga oras na
ginugol ko sa paaralan para
magsulat. Naaalala ko yung mga
taong dati-rati ay tuwang tuwa
pag nagbabasa ng mga isinusulat
ko. Madalas, gusto kong bumalik
sa Laiya para magbalik-tanaw
lang. Siguro, balang araw.
Kaya ikaw, kung isa kang
kagaya ko na mahilig magsulat,
wag kang mawalan ng pag-asa.
At wag na wag mo ring
kakalimutan ang mga taong
naging parte ng pag-unlad mo.

English as a social status. Pa rin?

A video went viral on different

networking sites when a
pasosyal mom with her daughter
entered McDonalds food chain
on Angeles Pampanga, this
month of October.
The flow of the story goes
like this when the mother
didnt like the way the cashier
communicated with them in
English dialect she started to
humiliate and under estimate
the cashier and have told the
manager to have a special lane
for those who were like her
educated and fluent in terms of
speaking on the English dialect
and for those normal people
unlike her.
This video caught everyones
attention; thousands of netizens
reacts on how rude the mother
and daughter communicated
with the staffs, crew and even
to the manager of the said food
chain.
The question is, is it really the
English language we have to use

and adopt today? Is it proper

to replace our own language
Filipino for the sake of speaking
the National language English?
Lets go back into our past and
refreshed ourselves in this topic.
Quezon, Rizal, Bonifacio and
Mabini are just some of those
thousands of heroic Filipinos
who learn to stand and sacrifice
their lives for our own liberty
and rights.
They were the one who
encounter their worst bloody
nightmare while fighting for our
democracy as well as for having
our own language, Filipino.
They were the one who perish
and suffer on the time we needed
them the most. So what is the
sense of their sacrifice if we are
already replacing it today.
The English language is said
to be the international language
because most of the country uses
it. It was well-known around
the globe and was brought to as
when the American government

took over our own government.

In our society today, Filipinos
are well knowned to be good
and fluent in English. We are
respected for being grammar
nazi.
But this viral video shows
inappropriate way of using
English dialect in humiliating
persons whos lack of knowledge
and capability on using the
dialect.
When the mother starts
making a scene and talking
trash into the cashier it was
observed that they were using
the English language, bragging
their knowledge the way it is not
supposed to be use.
Filipino is our identity. We
should be proud of it. Its not bad
to use the English language but
we should have limitation when
using it. The purpose of our
language is simply to establish
contact among people all around
the globe. Otherwise leads to the
defeat of its purpose.

There are clans that recruits you only if you have their trophy needed. You can also upgrade your town hall.
It unlocks the hidden items in the shop which you can use while playing. Upgrade also your walls because
you will be attacked

You attack-and are attacked. The stars you can get when you attack your enemy will go

Wizard attack to any defenses, collector and storages. Healers
heal the weak troops. Dragons blow hot glowing fire which
damages the whole village. P.E.K.K.A. attacks ground enemy.
The Hooking Part
Once offline, chances are that your village will be

This is when the clash translates to the real world and sends the interests of teachers and parents clashing
with those of their digital natives.

The presidential election

in the Philippines scheduled
on Monday May 9, 2016 will
determine the 16th president of
the Philippines.
The Philippines will go to
the polls to choose a new head of
state bringing to an end the sixyear term served by incumbent
President Benigno Aquino III.
And the winning leader, under
the current constitution can
only hold one six-year political
service in the comparable white
house of the Philippines, The
Malacaang Palace.
The extra time look to be much
needed. The list of candidates
who will run for the throne of
presidency are Manuel Mar
Roxas II, 58, the DILG secretary
who came from the Liberal Party.
Grace Poe Llamanzares, 46, is
the presidential neophyte from
the Independent Party. Jejomar
Jojo Binay, 72, of the United
Nationalist Alliance is known
for being the longest standing
mayor of Makati City.
The fourth candidate, from
the PDP Laban Party list is
the hardtalker mayor of Davao,
Rodrigo Duterte.
And last but not the least,
Mirriam Defensor Santiago, a 70

year old former senator from the

Reform Partylist.
They are the five hot names in
the presidential election of 2016.
But election in 2016, or any
election for that matter, is not
about personalities. They should
be about advocacies.
Let us look into each.
Jejomar Binay, while besieged
by allegations of corruption,
wants to keep the developmental
economic policies left by the
Aquino Admin plus the so-called
pro-Filipino provision of the
1987 constitution that has also
been part of his platform. The
question to his candidacy will be:
Can Binay unshackle all of this?
Next from the list is Grace Poe
Ilamanzares, the adopted chold
of Susan Roces and Fernando
Poe Jr., one of the most popular
showbiz couples in the country.
Her political flatforms mainly
focuses on poverty alleviation,
opportunities for all and
especially the children. Apart
from all of this, is this allegation
from his conservative opponent
about her birth certificate, she
has no documental proof of her
biological parents. In addition,
Poe has no proof of reconsidering
that she is a Filipino. Thus, she

cannot run for president.

Do you have a 100 peso bill/
Mar Roxas is the grandson of
Manuel Roxas, the proud face of
the 100 peso bill. Who decided
to run for president on the 2016
election after Mr. President
Noynoy Aquino anointed him to
become his successor and liberal
Partys standard bearer. One
of his ground plan is to bring
together the status of economic
compendious
and
clean
governance. Mar came from an
influential political family. Thats
why it is not impossible for him
to win the Presidential throne.
But there is his running mate
wanna be who is Grace Poe who
said earlier that she is also want
to run for president in 2016. Can
Mar break its highest rate?
However, political platforms
should be based on us, should be
about us. It is for our childrens
future. Today politicians take
the back seat for their visibility
to voters. Their image on TV
and print ads and their sincerely
voices we hear over radio. But
whoever the winner will be, he or
she may faces those expectations
from the public. I hope that the
winning candidate will give her/
his best to serve our country.

The Nick Vujicic of Laiya

Kathleen Shayne Ayap

Imagine getting through your day without your arms and legs. How will you write? How will
you enjoy your favorite food if you cannot hold it? How will you walk your day? Tough, right?
Have you heard the story
of Nick Vujicic. He is nothing
like Bill Gates or Tiger Woods
or Brad Pitt. He is not a multimillionaire man nor an athlete
nor a Hollywood actor. But he is
a man of great personality. Nick
was born with a rare congenital
condition called Tetra-Amelia
syndrome. It is a disorder
characterized by the absence of all
four limbs. Thus, his body has no
arms and no legs; just a torso with
a head.
Growing up, he experienced
discrimination
and
bullying
that

brought
him to
a huge
depression.
That is why
when he was
only eight

years old, he attempted to commit

suicide. The only thing that
stopped him is this story told by
his mother about another severely
disabled man who was able to
endure and turned his disability
into hope. It inspired him to
dream big. He can now do a lot of
daily things done by abled people.
And by means of his dedication,
he graduated at the age of 21 with
flying colors. Now he spends his
life motivating physically disabled
persons through his organization
called Life Without Limbs.
Laiya National High School
houses another Nick Vujicic in the
name of Manuel Dueas, better
known as Manny.
He was born on November
08, 1995 in Laiya-Aplaya, San
Juan, Batangas. His mother is
Constancia Dueas and his father
is Elidio Dueas. There are 13
siblings of them in the family.
Just like Nick, Manny was born
without hands and toes but the
only difference is that Manny has
arms and legs.
During his early years, Manny
felt ashamed of his physical
condition. He skipped school for
some years knowing that he will
be bullied. Neverthless, his family
and friends inspire and push him
to carry on and continue his life.
He started schooling in his
elementary days in Aplaya
Elementary School and he
endured the hardship of learning
without his tarsals and carpals.

He learned how to read. He

devised his own way of writing
without his fingers. He learned
how to sew his own clothes. Ironic
it may seem, but he also became
fond of drawing.
According to him, it is his way
of expressing himself. Luckily, he
finished his elementary without
the fear of anything.
He continued his high school
education in Laiya National High
School. The school is distant
from his home. That was when he
learned how to drive a motorcycle.
When Rubiks cube became
popular, he competed with his
friends and he has beaten most of
them. In school, you will see him
holding his bag in front of him
trying to hide his disability. His
smile conceals his missing hands
and toes.
Now in Grade 10, he just wants
to enjoy the ride of his life.
This is the story of Nick Vujicic
and Manuel Dueas who believe
that they are capable in their own
ways.
Both of them inspire and
encourage people to live with
their fullest potential; not
allowing anything to get in their
way to accomplish their hopes and
dreams.
Many would think my goals
are too far-fetched. However, I
believe that if you have the desire
and passion to do something, you
will achieve it in good times, Nick
said. This line goes for Manny too.

Stay Home. It is called staycation spending

vacation at home. I love staying at home. You can sleep all day
and watch and eat! Open up a bottle of your fave juice, pour
out in a mason jar and be refreshed. Visit your Facebook
account. Chat. Watch Yaya Dub or Pastillas Girl. Try
movie marathon. Game of Thrones, Heroes Reborn and
Walking Dead Series are good choices. Just dont forget
your house chores!
Swim and play under the rain. Who
said
swimming can be only done during summer? Not all
times,
it pours. Besides, it is more fun swimming and playing
under
the rain, except when the radio announces typhoon.
When it pours hard and long, run your way under the
misty
sky. Make paper boats. Dance around like a child. Be like
a child! Oh! And your body will be
refreshed and relaxed as well. Why not invite your friends? Pack food. Play. Surely, it will be fun!
Sleep. Everyday you wish you do not have to get up early. At night, you sleep as late 10:00
PM. In the morning, you wake up as early 3:00 AM. That is only five hours of sleep. When you go to
school, you cannot concentrate because your body lacks energy. Recharge this school break. Sleep as
much eight hours. It will awaken your senses. It will boost your body for the upcoming activities.
Earn money.
Summer time in Laiya
is earning time. There is a
myriad of ways to make the
most of the off-school and
thicken your purse.
Sell. Anything frozen or
cold-- like buko salad
which never goes out of uso.
Or its cousin, the ice candy.
Or go for the traditional stuff
like banana queue and/or
turon, and other bite-sized
stuff like butchi. Swimmers
will need it after a tiring dip.
Go part-time. Did you know
some beach resorts employ
15 year olds? Pass your CVs
and get hired. Or you may be
into rakets like tutoring, or
hosting, or
singing at
parties? Or manning stores?

Cook. Cook and sell some home made products such as turon,
spaghetti, puto and any delicacies. Why not use the skills you learned
in TLE? Prepare table set-up. Be creative or maybe cook for your
family. It is going to be sweet. Try these recipes and bon appetite!

Easy Champorado Recipe

Ingredients:
5 pieces tablea ( pure chocolate )
1 cups glutinous rice or sushi
rice
cup granulated white
sugar
6 to 8 cups water
Condensed milk to
taste.
Cooking Procedures:
Pour water in the cooking pot and wait
until it boils. Dissolve the tablea in water then stir. Add the rice
and let it boil again for about 15-25 minutes. Add sugar and wait
until it dissolves. Presto! You have the champorado. Transfer the
champorado into a serving bowl. Serve!

Whats Hot , Whats Not ?

We dont mean to be judgmental
or anything. We just want to
document Laiyans fashion
profiles, if one may call it that.
Lets see whats hot, and whats
not.
Ready-for-the-road
Unbuttoned polo and colored
undershirt plus rubber shoes-road-ready, yes. Add that big
hanky resting lousily on your
shoulder, taxi anyone?
Frustrated-cager-ang-peg
If not that hanky on ones
shoulder, it is that Bench bath
spinning freely on index finger.
What are you trying to prove,
dude? Are you a frustrated
basketball player that you cannot
spin balls so you spin towels?
Hopeless romantic style
Students have devised a new
way of expressing their love. That
is through their shoes. They write
down their term of endearment
with their monthsary date. How

Kathleen Shayne Ayap

sweet! Sweet but not cool.
Ready-set-go style
This is the style of students
who do not wear proper foot
wear. They are the ones who wear
rubber shoes even if they are not
scheduled for Physical Education
(P.E.) subject. High cut shoes and
neon colored shoes are among
them. Worst, some students wear
two different colors of shoe lace
just to catch attention.
You might ask, why do we have
to wear the proper uniform?
For one, it gives identity to
your school. Most importantly,
the school prepares a student for
a bigger world. Time will come
and you will apply for a job. You
will work in a corporate world.
You will dress up according to
the standards and nature of your
work. How will you wear the
proper attire if in school, you
did not acquire the discipline
in wearing proper uniform in

school? Trust me. You will have a

hard time. Worst, you might lose
your job just because you do not
know how to follow the correct
dress code.
While it is not yet late, why not
wear what is really hot? By hot, I
mean appropriate school uniform.
Neatly ironed and properly
buttoned polo over plain wire
undershirt are the coolest for boys.
Pair it up with khaki pants and
black leather shoes with socks. For
girls, slippers and rubber shoes do
not go well with school skirts and
blouse. Skirts must be well-pleated
which can be achieved through
ironing. Blouses must be collared,
too. Do not forget the necktie. It
gives accent and professional sense
to your blouse-skirt pair.
Do not allow yourself to be a
fashion victim. In school, you are
fashionable if you can walk well
with your neat and proper school
uniform.

Hi Clara! The feeling is mutual. I like school breaks too. Who does not? But oftentimes, it gets wasted.
We wake up to a fresh scent of our first day of school break and the next thing we knew, it is over.
Why not try the following activities to make your school breaks productive?
Jog and Bike. You spent most
of your days sitting on a chair
inside your classroom and your
nights sitting in front of your
computer or cellphone either
playing COC or researching
homework. You barely stretch
your muscles in the morning
because you are late for school.
This school break is your chance
to exercise your muscles. You
are used to waking up early.
Do the same and put on your
headset and run to the tune of
your
music. You may bring
your pet dog with
you. If you are not
in the mood to jog,
why not get your
bicycle and try
to bike around
your area. You
may bike the distance
from your home to school. Trust
me. It is good to sweat out those
stresses of school days.

Read. Admit it or not, not all of us are good readers. Some are
having a hard time reading even a simple word .Look into your old
school books, find a good one and practice reading. If you have extra
money, buy. For our age, these are some books you may try:

Hang-out with friends. You only get to see your friends in school. At night cellphone is the only form
of communication. Where is the bond there? You barely exchange friendly greetings. Semestral break will give
you a chance to bond with them better. You can meet old friends friends who transferred schools; friends
from elementary; or friends who have gone abroad. Rent a videoke and sing the night away. Hunt celebrations

when everyone gets back to their own shells.

the moment by taking pictures.

the rules of nature. Take nothing

hero and clean up the mess other
hikers often leave.
