Thisresearchexplorestheproblemofthenonexistenceofanoperationalandintegral
definitionoflanguageinthefieldofrepresentationinarchitecture,despitethe
widespreaduseandtacitvalidationofdrawingandmodellingassuch,bothinacademic
environmentsandinprofessionalpractice.Theresearchreviewsfromdifferent
perspectivesthecommonmetaphorof"thinkingwiththehands".Thisconceptis
reviewedthroughthecriticaldifferences(psychological,neurological,cognitive,
linguistic,sensory,amongothers)betweenthinking,basedontheagitationofsingle
organs/limbs(likethetongue),orthinking,basedontheagitationofdualorgans/limbs
(likethehands).Forthispurposeitisalsonecessarytoreconsiderthepertinenceofthe
commonuseoftheconceptofthinking,insteadoftheconceptofintelligence(Piaget)in
projectivepractices.
Fromthispointofview,thispaperexaminestheproblemofthepartialincompatibilityof
language(andMaturanaslenguajear)asasupportofthoughtandhumancognitive
learning,ingeneral(Wittgenstein,Piaget,Vygotski,Chomsky,Sapir)withtheparticular
mentalprocessinginherenttoarchitecturalthinking(Sperry,Edwards,Segu,Bergen,
Sacks,Zumthor,etc.).Thisarchitecturalthinkingisbasedonthesensorimotor
intelligenceandhanduse(Piaget,Pallasmaa,Sennet,Wilson,Bell,Bergen,Sacks,Noe)
specifictotheenactiveknowledge(Varela)involvedinprojectivepracticesand
architecturalrepresentations.

Abstract:

Theunderlyinghypothesisofthisresearchassumesthatmanoajeisahomologous
neologismtolanguage(2),butarguedonthebasisthatintensionalmakingwiththe
hands,isthematerialbaseofarchitecturalthinking,andisalsoresponsibleforthe
projectconfigurationbymeansofthearchitecturalwork(CRCAMOPINO,2013).In
otherwordsifforanadulthumanbeinglanguageisthematerialbaseofthought
(ITZIGSOHN,1995),forarchitects,manoajeisthematerialbaseofarchitectural
thinking(CRCAMOPINO,2013).
Finally,thediscussionfocusesonpossibleconsequencesthatmayarisefromthe

conceptualredefinitionmade,andfromtheexnovoneologismmanoaje.Fromthis
perspective,andconsideringtheoperationalcharacteristicsthatthisneologismsets,this
researchexplainstheutilityofthisepistemologicalexercisetoapproachandtospecify
countlessissuesthatpersistintheacademicanddisciplinaryworkeventoday.
(1)Homologousneologismtolanguagebutwithhands.Basedontheintentional
agitationofhandsandtheimpactthishasonmattertocommunicateorself
communicate(to"reflect").Although,instrictdefinition,itisnotalanguage,manoaje
freesthe"language"ofthesemanticweightthatthenountongueimposes(tongueis
lenguainSpanish),keepingonlytheessentialconditionofthesetofsignalsthat
suggestsomething(RAE,2012),certainlywiththesubstantivedifferencesthisimplies,
eveninthedefinitionofthecommunicatingsomething(CRCAMOPINO,2013).Itisthe
generalizationofgrafoaje,understoodas[...]thesystemofsignsfortherepresentation
ofthreedimensionality,thataidsurbandesigners,architects,industrial,graphic,and
interiordesignersandalsosculptors,paintersandsketchers,inthementalprocessesof
handlingspace,formorfigure(spatialmentalimagery)(PREZCARABIAS,2006).
(2)InSpanishtheword"lenguaje"(language)andthewordlengua(tongue)sharethe
sameLatinroot:"lingua".Therefore,intheneologism"manoaje",theword"mano"
(hand)replacestheLatinrootword"lingua"(tongue).
