Introduction to Environmental Engineerings Plant Visit: Centralized
Wastewater Treatment Facility and Pilotage Sanitary Landfill
Sept 9, 2016

In our plant visit for this term, we were accompanied by our professor, Maam Ng.
There were two buses for each section that participated, there were two different
sections together so there were four buses all together. The call time was 6:00 AM, I
arrived 5:45 AM but unfortunately we left the school around 7:00 AM.
As soon as the bus started moving, we started our journey with a prayer. The first
Itinerary was Centralized waste water Treatment Facility at San Pedro. All the 4
buses made a stopover at SlEX Gas station and after that, we then continued on our
travel. The buses arrived at the Water treatment Facility around 10 AM. The students
were oriented per section inside the bus about the wastewater treatment facility.
Then we headed to the facility accompanied by an engineer, which the facility
contains lots and lots of chambers where the water is being treated. First, we went
to the area where they store the water. Theres a specific tank for distilled water,
mineral water, water for cleaning and maintenance, and untreated water. After
which, we headed where bottled water are made, and saw that machines do the
actual filling of the water but people manually put the labels and store them in
boxes. The last stop was where five gallon water container are being cleaned,
treated and filled in. It was machine operated, but theres a manual labourer
checking for quality control. Although we have walked far, we have learned a lot
because our guide explained to us all the processes very clearly. After we finished
up to the last chamber of the process, we immediately went inside our respective
buses and then went to the next stop which was The pilotage Sanitary Landfill. The
students were also oriented batch by batch inside the bus. Then we headed to the
landfill where theres so many garbage around and lots of workers. We saw there a
huge truck that contains the soil to cover the garbage in the landfill and we also
noticed that some people are spraying chemicals to the garbage so that it wont
affect the air or it will not cause air pollution. We then headed into the recycling
area, where people actually scavenge for something useful. We found out that they
are also selling slippers made from recycled trash. The last stop in the site was a
house made from recycled materials. Although I wasnt able to go out of the bus to
have a clearer view of the processes they make in the garage because of the stench
produced by the garbage, I still managed to understand the said processes because
I listened to the orientation inside the bus, and all our questions were answered by
the speaker and It was not a requirement to go outside to see he field.
Our plant visit was truly an educational experience for me. As an aspiring
engineer, and also as part of the future of the next generation, I think that it is really

our duty and responsibility to make the world a better place as engineers and as an
individual living in this world. It alarmed me that the level of toxic gases on our
atmosphere is very high already, and so is the level of pollution in our air and in
water. I truly liked the visions of the administrations of Metro Clark Sanitary Landfill.
I liked how it kept on dreaming for something that will truly help one of the
dilemmas in our country. I liked that it has continuously aspires for a better system,
how they managed to be independent from the Germans, and how they all do these
efforts for our country. It not only shows how they are truly dedicated with their
careers but also their love for our country and for nature. I hope all engineers will be
like that, and not only focus on the money thing.
All in all, the trip not only made me aware of how difficult it is to be an engineer, but
it also enlightened me to see the real goal of this profession that is to make the
world a better place not only for me but for everyone. It made me realize all the
soon-to-be responsibilities that we all have to fill in once we get into the real world.
And its nice to finally be oriented when were this young, so in the future, we will be
guided accordingly. Our world may be damaged, but it can be brought back to its
original form. There is still hope for us, there is still hope for our world.

1.What is the name of the treatment plant?

2.When did they start operating? 1997

3.Give a short discussion on the company profile.

4.From what sources are the water being treated coming from?

Factories within camelray. There are transmission, electronixs and companies. Like
jollibee dunkin pride acs manufacturing kfc etc.

5.What is the primary treatment used in the plant? Specify the ddifferent physical
treatments used.

6.What is the secondary treatment used in the plant? Indicate the biological
treatments used.

7.What is the advanced treatment used in the plant? Aside from disinfection,
indicate other treatments used.

8.What are they doing to the sludges?

Sir Luis.

1st stage. Lift station. Influent from the whole park. Wastewater is pumped to the
different facilities in the wastewater treatment plant. 14000 cubic liter per day.

2nd stage: screening. Screening of solids.

Parshall flume. Open channel.

Aerated grit chamber/pacifier. From the screening.

Ph chamber. Scum nakakalusot. Purpose is to feed chemicals. 6-9 ph ang

wastewater. To regulate ph to standard. Only works if there is an irregulariry in ph.

Primary clarifier. Where sludges settle. To remove and reduce sludges and other
solids. To collect sludge. Anaerobic bacteria exists here. It lives without oxygen.

Aeration tank. Biological aeration. Where bacteria lives. Loaded with bacteria. They
eat sludge that comes with water. One cell can already treat the load. Thats why
only 1 is needed. 2hrs continuous blower. Return activated sludge. It needs oxygen.
It feeds bacteria. Normal bacteria like protozoa. Continuous supply of o2 so that
bacteria will live.

Pagkalabas sa aeration tank. Sludge na nakakalusot pumupunta rito. LLDA. TO

CLARIFY WATER. In the middle, sludge is collected. Secondary clarifier. Activated
slidge ang kinukuha. Buhay ang bacteria pwedeng ibalik sa aeration tank.

Effluent tank for measuring the flow purity. Safe for plant watering but not for
drinking. Class c water.

Sludge thickener. Sludge collected is brought here. The sludge is tested. They are
under test if it ready for disposal.

Sludge dehydrator or decanter. Sludge is mixd with chemicals. Extracts slufge from
water. Coagulant is put in it to separate watwr and sludge.

Sludge is treated after to eliminate contaminants.

Carmelray. Ind park. 450 ha induatrial. 50 ha residential. All wastes are put here.
Centralized sewer line. Monthly monitoring is done. They are given certificates to
inform them of the parameters to be followed. Of not followed, they penalize them.
Wastewater collected from the whole industrial park is treated here. 14000 m3 per
day. Average of 5000 m3 per day.

Jollibee. Transmission mitsubishi. Kopel ac. Kfc gravy. Seaweeds. Dunkin donut.
Electronics company tonshing. Pesticides.

Sludge is collected then they are treated by another company. Then, if

contaminants are eliminated. Then, it can be used for other purposes like pathwalks
as shown to us by Sir Luis in the water treatment plant.

1.What is the name of the sanitary landfill?

Pilotage Sanitary Landfill

2.When did they start operating?

2001 its a dumpsite. But in 2004, it started to be a sanitary landfill. Is checked if
there is pollution once a year.

3.Give a short discussion on the company profile.

Sir Danilo Miranda is a pilot.

4.What type of industries send their wastes into the sanitary landfill.
Santa rosa laguna. Carmona los banos san pedro. muntinlupa

5.What is the liner used in the landfill? Where do they get it, from local or foreign
supplier?

Rubber type of liner 3/4 size. Foreign supplied

6.Do they have a material recovery facility? How do they maintain it?

There is an mrf. the sorters have a segregator area then after that, the colleceted
materials are put in the mrf.

After segregation, the objects segregated are brought to mrf. The mrf serves as
bodega. In the mrf, there are individuals who buy thise materials. Those individuals
recycle these materials like things used for cement or making cement.

7.How is the leachate treated? Aerobic or anaerobic treatment?

There is a leachate fan. Five daw ata. Magtatanong pa ko sa iba tungkol dito.

8.Upon closing each cell of the sanitary landfill, how long would it take before it
could generate methane as energy source?

Almost one and a half year before it could generate methane as energy source.
Bacavalley rents on Pilotage. They put cells.

Methane is intact as of now. This coming october Bacavalley will start operating.
