CHAPTER 2
2.0 PREFACE
Malaysia is dramatically developing country. All the agencies includes
government and privates always cooperation to involve in every part in
developing this country. Within this twenty years, there are many
infrastructure kept being built up. As a vision which claim to make
transform Malaysia to become a world class country by the year 2020,
developing pace has been increase to make sure the vision became true.
Meanwhile, as a globalization challenges gradually become greater and
greater every day, more and more technology that has been developed.
As a student of civil engineering, there is no doubt we have to deal
with infrastructure division. Theoretical knowledge and basic concept is no
longer enough to prepare us for future challenges ahead. Besides this
entire theoretical concept we learn does not consider environment factor.
There are thousands of potential problems causes by environment which
we could ever imagine of. How can we be sure if we are ready for all these
an unexpected challenges?

Industrial Training Report

So, that why university has prepared this practical training to us.
Besides, through this industrial training, we can have the better insight
into the reality of this field and gain some picture about the potential
challenges which we might face in the future. Hoping we may have better
prepare in facing future challenges, this training is being carried out.
Through this we have chances to meet some experience engineers. We
can learn way of solving problems, people to deal with, necessary
precautions and even get some precious advices from them. The training
will certainly benefit us as civil engineering students.

PROJECT AND ACTIVITIES INVOLVED IN VALSERV SDN BHD

1. Introduction to Project and Organization of Construction Drawing
For the beginning, Id been at the main office and was introduced to the
background of the company, the organization and the projects they had involved with. I
was exposed to the construction drawing; who are responsible to do the drawing, contains
of the drawing, detailing of the drawing, and how to analyze the drawing. Besides that,
the staff of the office was described about the organization of civil, architectural, and
mechanical and electrical drawings. I had learned how to differentiate the type of
drawings in a project and their purposes. I was assigned to identify the parts of a building
involving the bungalow, central facilities, hall, mosque, and exc. I also was assigned to
check the list of drawings and set them in the order as listed.
The other things I did is editing the bill of quantities included the checking for
process and errors in bill of quantities until the process of printing and photostatting. It is
a part of document tender of the project.
The last thing I did at the main office was editing the drawing of the drain because
some adjustment existing with the project. So, I have to do the plotting of site plan
drawings, calculation and final checking of the length of u-drain involving u-drain, udrain and lid, and print out the drawing plan.

2. Introduction to the Construction on Site

For the second week, I had started my work at the project site at Kuantan,
Pahang. As I been there, the officer has introduced me the project Im going to deal with.
The project is:

He had given a brief introduction about construction on site and brings me for site
visit to show all the buildings and area of the site.

3. Taking-off and documentation

I had done the checking for taking-off of beam of hall and mosque in civil
drawings. I used the scale ruler to measure the exact length of reinforcement bar in the
drawing. Besides that, I have to identify the types of reinforcement bars used; Y10, Y20,
Y25, R10, BRC A7 and BRC A8 and then check the measurement of bars to be cut, bent,
drop, and overlapping. Supposedly, the reinforcement bar at the top is larger in size from
the bottom one. The total reinforcement bar used was calculated after the process of
checking. Finally, I have to check either the total is tally or not with the bill of quantities.

4. Request for Inspection(RFI) and Documentation

The student as behalf of contractor will prepare RFI for the related structure to be
checked by the consultant for an approval to the next jobs. Then, after the RFI approved
the responsible is handed to the consultant that approves the RFI. After the checking is
done, the consultant will give a comment regarding to the inspection officially. As a
contractor they need to record all the documents for the further reference.
5. Request for Information(RFI) and Documentation
6. Job Responsible
a) Inspection of workers and daily work progress
- Spray anti-termite
- Cut and bent of reinforcement bars
- Leveling each floor
- Formwork
- Rectification G5 and drilling
- Scaffolding upper floor beam
Rifer Appendix 2

b) Inspection work progress at Mosque

- The progress is at the pile cap stage. One problem occur that is flooding in the
excavate area. For the solution they had pump out the water.

Industrial Training Report

Industrial Training Report

c) Inspection of installation formwork and rebar column, slab, staircase, stump and pile
cap.
I did the inspection for size and dimension of formwork of pile cap. There are
three types of pile cap which consist three, two, and one piles. I also did there inspection
of reinforcement bar of pile caps.
I also join the inspection did by SCG consultant to inspect formwork and rebar of
column, beam, slab, staircase, stump, and pile cap before concreting. There were so many
problems occurred during the inspection. For example, there was dirt in the formwork
due to debris and rubbish, and they did not install the formwork properly on that
structure.

Industrial Training Report

Industrial Training Report

Industrial Training Report

d) Inspection of concreting column, slab, staircase, stump and pile cap.

Before the concreting process, as a supervisor, they should know the total volume
of concrete needed. The supervisor also need to know the discipline of concreting of any
structure; like when we do the concreting for slab, they must pour the concrete from one
side to another side to make sure that the concrete do not harden before they achieve the

Industrial Training Report

same thickness. Normally, we use volume of concrete around 95-100 m3 for one slab. For
the rest structure, its depending on the size and quantity of the structures. Sometimes, if
the structure is too big and difficult to do the concreting, they just can complete the half
of the structure on one day, and proceed the concreting on the next day.
Usually, for pile cap and stump, we use the concrete of grad G35, while for the
other structures, we use the concrete of grad G30. Example of problems on this stage is
like the worker doesnt tell their supervisor in charge that the concrete wasnt enough, the
mixer-lorry broke down, and concrete vibrator also broke down, and exc.

Industrial Training Report

Industrial Training Report

e) Inspection spray and injection anti-termite

For any construction, they must take care of the damage cause by termite. There
are two ways to prevent this type of problem; for normal structure, they directly spray the
soil with anti-termite. They have to spray the soil, stump, and pile cap before backfill soil.
Another way is to inject the anti-termite into the soil via a hole made on slab. We do this
method if the workers forget to spray the anti-termite before the backfill, and for
abandoned project. This anti-termite guarantee is 2 years.
Spray Soil Anti-termite

Injection Anti-termite

Industrial Training Report

Industrial Training Report

f) Inspection verticality of column(using timbang air or plumb bob)

This is a traditional method that can find the verticality of column, slab, beam,
and exc. This method is cheaper and easier to conduct.

g) Inspection lean concrete (2-3 depth)

In our construction, we use concrete grad G-15 as a lean concrete. Lean concrete
used to separate the structure from directly connected to soil. Usually, we put the lean
concrete about 2-3 inches thickness. It is also used for ground floor or any structure that
is directly connected to the soil.

Industrial Training Report

h) Inspection of installation cable wires or mechanical & electrical works, sanitary and
cold water
There are some sub-contractors that are responsible to the mechanical and
electrical works in our construction. They should have their own short drawing of their
works of each building. They should properly install the M&E equipment simultaneously
with the civil works. For example, they should do M&E works before we put the BRC
and concreting the slab.

Industrial Training Report

Industrial Training Report

i) Inspection of problems on site (rectification reinforcement, honey comb and etc)

Since it is an abandoned project, we found that many reinforcement bars was
stolen from the site, involving the bars from column, beam, and slab. For the solution, we
use Hammer Capsule method to rectify the problems. It is a method from Germany.
Usually we use two Hammer Capsules for one hole. But, it is too expensive and difficult
to conduct. Therefore, we use another method which is G5 method. It is a Malaysian
method and is cheaper from another one. It also can carry high loading up to 40 tonne.
The steels are completely set 2 hours after rectification. The depth for the rectification is
about 6-8 inches for both methods.
Problem that normally we have to face at site is honeycomb. Honeycomb is a
situation which is the structure does not properly covered by concrete the concrete is not
homogenously poured and caused because the reinforcement bars to expose to the air. As
the solution, we should use the cement grout; which is a special material that has special
characteristic and strength, requested from the consultant.

j) Inspection of earthwork works

This stage is involving the works of cut and fill, compaction, layering, leveling,
and site clearing around the site area. The time of completion of the work is depending on
the soil characteristic, weather, existing material on site, and machineries used.

Industrial Training Report

k) Inspection compaction of soil n aggregate for road

We use aggregates of size 30-50 mm for road layer. Normally, we compact the
soil or aggregates four times per layer based on consultant requirement. But, the JKR
standard require 12 times of compaction per layer. The self weight of the compactor is
one tone.
l) Inspection of brick lays and alignment
The bricks must be lay according to the drawing details based on the centre line
and grid line. The alignment must be set up and followed by the brick layers. We hire a
specialist to do the brick layers to ensure the layers are straight and not waving.

m) Inspection setting direction of KIBLAT

This inspection needs the guide and co-operation from Jabatan Agama Islam
Pahang (JAIP). They have to be there during the inspection to ensure the direction is
accurate. From our surveyor, he just used the theodolite to measure the correct direction
of Kiblat. Then, our surveyor was checking the result with JAIP for conformation. After
that, if the result is tally, then JAIP will give a certificate by Mufti approval. Only after
we get the certificate, we can start to construct the mosque.

Industrial Training Report

n) Conduct concreting of pile cap, stump and slab

As a practical student, I had assigned to conduct the concreting for certain
structures like pile cap, stump, and slab. I had learned how to manage the workers,
machineries, and concrete during the concreting. They also give me a chance to make an
order for concrete from the concrete agent.
o) Update monthly report progress

Industrial Training Report

The report progress must be update at the end of every month. So, I suppose to
capture the structure of each buildings, photocopy, analysis, print, arrange report in order,
and bind them together. We have two types of report that should be updated every month
which is; progress report, and quantity assurance and quality control report. We have to
prepare ten copies of each report for the clients and consultant references. Project
manager and resident engineer must check and approve the report before it is bring into
the meeting.
7. Learn about site progress
a) Request for Inspection (RFI)
RFI is used by the contractor to inform the consultant about the inspection
progress of the structure. It is always used in any construction by the contractor for the
purpose of construction work.
b) Terms(LAD,CF,LR,EOT)
LAD Liquidated Ascertained Damage
CF Certificate of Fitness (practical completion)
LR Liquidity Period (period that client can claim for defects construction)
EOT Extension of Time
c) Batching plant operations
Batching plant is a machine that is used to mix the concrete due to the grad
request by the client. On the batching plant, it has several concrete components such as;
water, sand, cement, and aggregates. It can produce up to 100 m3 of concrete per day. For
example, ratio for grad 30 concrete is 1:2:3 which is aggregate 82 kg, cement 5 kg, and
water 849 liters. Every concrete produced will be tested using slump test and cube test.
We pour the concrete until three layers and do the hammering 25 times for each layer.
Slump for concrete of grad 30 should be around 25 mm.
Cube test also carried out at the site. We need to do hammering 35 times for each
three layers. After 7 days, we test the strength of the concrete using unit load, and do the
same at the 28th day

d) How to make special blocks

Industrial Training Report

Special block is the small blocks make from cement, sand, and water. It is used as
the concrete cover for columns, beams, slabs, and exc. Usually the dimensions of the
blocks depend on the structure design.

e) Estimate store capacity

At this stage, I have to calculate the quantity of cement bags that can be stored in
the material storage.
f) Workers
The workers had been divided into certain work such as concreting, carpenter,
tukang besi. They work as teamwork in a building or for a certain structure.
g) FDT Test(for soil)
h) Conclusion
i) As the conclusion, this industrial training had given me a lot of knowledge and
new experiences towards my work after I finish my study afterwards. The
valuable eight weeks of training was very meant to me as I had exposed to the real
civil engineering works like preparing the reports, go to inspections, conducting
the workers, and make order for construction materials. With the guidance from
the site supervisor, I have learned many new technologies applied at the site that I
cant be found in the formal lectures at the university. With those experiences, I
can share with my friends about new technologies in Malaysia.
j) From this industrial training also, I had known how to apply all the knowledge I
gained in the class previously since Im in the diploma stage until now in the real
engineering works. Besides that, I can refresh my mind about what I had learnt
before and improve my understanding about the applications of those engineering

Industrial Training Report

softwares like autocad, MATLAB, ESTEEM, and exc. Without this experiences,
I would not know how to utilize these softwares that will make our works easier
and even faster. In the future, I have to learn more about softwares used in civil
engineering works.
k) Last but not least, I can improve my communication skills through the industrial
training; the communication with the staffs, persons from other department and
with the community as this is one of the important skills an engineer have to
acquire. After eight weeks of training, Ive found myself are ready to face the real
civil engineering world soon.
l) I have some suggestions to improve the industrial training in the future. Firstly,
the faculty should extend the industrial training duration like the other faculty do
that is six months of practical to give chance for the students to learn more and
ready their self for the works. Secondly, the faculty should provide lists of good
companies/consultants/contractors for the students to do their industrial training
as their reference because some students had go to the places that dont give them
much knowledge, and some students do have lot of knowledge but some do not.
So, the students need the guide from the faculty.
m) Industrial training is a good platform for the students to gain knowledge and
experiences as much as they can. Without all these, they will not ready to face the
real works and become a professional engineer as wished by the faculty and the
university.

found myself are ready to face the real civil engineering world soon.
I have some suggestions to improve the industrial training in the future. Firstly, the
faculty should extend the industrial training duration like the other faculty do that is six months
of practical to give chance for the students to learn more and ready their self for the works.
Secondly, the faculty should provide lists of good companies/consultants/contractors for the
students to do their industrial training as their reference because some students had go to the
places that dont give them much knowledge, and some students do have lot of knowledge but
some do not. So, the students need the guide from the faculty.
Industrial training is a good platform for the students to gain knowledge and experiences
as much as they can. Without all these, they will not ready to face the real works and become a
professional engineer as wished by the faculty and the university.
